need a diary and am of course slightly obsessed with pink

I await your permission, refusal or alternatives.

MrsSeanBean · 08/01/2010 18:03

I have this (Christmas present) and am using it to record all the things I want but am not buying.

FlightAttendant · 08/01/2010 18:08

Forgive me but why post asking if you are allowed to buy it? To me it implies you feel bad about it already.

But i will bow out there because I am only projecting what I ought to have said to myself about a year ago...if you don't want me to talk you out of it, I shan't keep trying to

PCPlumIsMyHomeboy · 08/01/2010 18:18

Ohhh. It's lovely. And pink. You shouldn't, of course. But is is MUCH cheaper than the Smythson, so...

PCPlumIsMyHomeboy · 08/01/2010 18:22

PS. Have now ordered myself a journal. Damn you!

dexter73 · 08/01/2010 18:36

FGS !!!

LetThemEatCake · 08/01/2010 18:42

FA - asking permission kind of tongue in cheek bc of the thread about not buying anything new this year. I am a clothes etc junkie and am making an effort to not add to my already-extensive wardrobe. Diaries don't really come into it - like I said, it was mostly tongue in cheek and partly "do you like this?"

really, I am far too frivolous and shallow for you to bother about analysing. Not much under my surface, I'm afraid

Plum - which one????

LetThemEatCake · 08/01/2010 18:43

oh MrsSB, that's lovely!!

I can't tell whether you are being serious with your £30 diaries and Paul Smith LBD's. I have a feeling you might be like Bonsoir and her pizza threads and trying to get us to be all judgy for a laugh!

LetThemEatCake · 08/01/2010 18:53

dexter - sheepskin boots now £45 at toast. Not uggs, but might be worth a look?

OP posts:
LetThemEatCake · 08/01/2010 18:54

not familiar with bonsoir and her pizza threads...

OP posts:
FlightAttendant · 08/01/2010 18:57

Oh I see.

Makes slightly more sense now what you meant by it.

But tbh there aren't going to be that many of us in your spending league to comment!!

dexter73 · 08/01/2010 19:01

If you have a spare hour or two to read them - here and another. They are very funny.
Toast boots are nice but I have a pair of Bearpaws so don't really need any. Good price though.

traceybath · 08/01/2010 19:02

For something you use everyday its worth it in my opinion.

I did well yesterday - added a dress to my basket as bonpoint sale for dd but didn't purchase it.

I blame bonsoir - it was she who alerted me to the gorgeousness of bonpoint for children but I am resisting.

I do think we should put emphasis on sensible purchasing - so you're allowed to spend money but just not on poor quality rubbish that you'll bin after two wears.

pointydig · 08/01/2010 19:09

If you want a very ordinary looking diary that costs many pounds, then buy it. It's a rather dull purchase.

FlightAttendant · 08/01/2010 19:10

I think that's another patience cheat!!

I got my nice, big notebook (sadly not smooth enough paper, but still) out of the dresser, it had been there unused for about 10 years since I bought it for £2 at the market.
I started using it in December as my old WHS diary was running out of space (had been making notes running backwards into late December for some time!!)
I carried on using it and still am. I don't need a posh one, no matter how nice it would be - actually i am starting to lose that fantasy that it would make me feel more 'special' if I splashed out on one. That's such a fallacy but it was a nice illusion for a while, when I needed something to cling to...it enabled me to 'solve' some of my purposely created 'problems' instead of concentrating on the real ones, eg 'Oh gosh I really need to find a very special bag that will really be 'me', but can't find one...' the search begins, you find it, problem solved. Onto the next.

VerityBrulee · 08/01/2010 19:13

You are such a menace, I just ordered a diary with my name in gold on the front, and what a bargain compared to the Smythson

dairymoo · 08/01/2010 19:15

I like nice stationary too, particularly when it's pink , but I honestly think that it is a lot of money to spend on something (i.e. non-branded pink diary) that you could easily find cheaper elsewhere.

I know that the "use it up" thread is focussed mainly on clothes, but I dare you to post the same question over there and see what the reaction is...

tulpe · 08/01/2010 19:36

Don't think LTEC can be compared to Bonsoir, imho.

Anyway.

To answer OP.....I like it. You obviously like it. Buy it, LTEC. It will make you smile every time you use it.

I have a Smythson Bond Street Diary which DH bought me 6 years ago. He buys me the refill each year as part of my Christmas stocking. It is a thing of beauty and possibly the only diary I have ever taken proper care of. It is such good quality that I will still be using it in 10 years time. So, as I like to calculate the true cost of items on a "cost per wear" basis, I think you will agree that it is actually quite a bargain

I also have a Smythson notebook similar to the Thoughts & Dreams one that Mrs SB has. I love it. But again, it was a gift, and not sure I would part with that much money myself for a notebook.

Yes, it is all frivolous but as LTEC says, if it gives you pleasure and you can afford it, then why not?

dexter73 · 08/01/2010 19:47

Why not...
Well if you are trying to stop shopping then spending £30 on a diary seems a bit strange when you can buy a perfectly good diary for a few pounds. It is only a diary after all.

PCPlumIsMyHomeboy · 08/01/2010 19:52

I went for this one, in Paprika because I adore that burnt orange shade, and it will look swank when I pull it out of my Chocolate Baywater.

lovely

Am hoping that the feature ideas it inspires me to come up with, pitch and then write will more than pay for it!

Zembo · 08/01/2010 20:05

LTEC go for it!

I got one of these this year. I particularly like the layout. Still think my perfect diary is out there waiting for me to discover it though. MUST be week to view for me. Had a moleskine page a day before and found it hard to use.

LetThemEatCake · 08/01/2010 20:07

are you a journo too Plum?

tulpe - not entirely sure what you mean by saying I am nothing like Bonsoir, probably best not to delve I suppose!

Verity - atta girl!! hope it's pink??

anyway, sheesh. This is all getting waaaay too heavy and political for little, shallow ol' me. I didn't buy the Paul Smith dress because it was unnecessary but a diary is an every day essential and I've done the Paperchase thing in the past and been unsatisfied by it. So whatever. As long as I'm I'm not hoiking the price up by customising the front with my life story, it remains a price that I can not only afford, but justify on a cost-per-use basis.

Over and out.

OP posts:
FlightAttendant · 08/01/2010 21:03

Urg.

We will never understand one another I think

AnInginAneAnA · 08/01/2010 21:09

£56 for your customisation(£2 per character) +£32 for the diary, (your mn name really suits you), £88 for a diary is hardly "living frugally".

tulpe · 08/01/2010 21:19

LTEC - shan't go into details here but suffice to say that Bonsoir did a very good job of winding up many MNers good n' proper over on AIBU on Thursday . Allegedly the whole thing was actually an experiment intended prove a point about the "average MNer". It wasn't pretty.

LTEC loves gorgeous things. But I don't think she can be accused of being "flash" or having a judgey and superior attitude towards others.

There are a wide range of lifestyles, incomes, backgrounds and types of people on MN. It's what makes it an interesting place to be. Let's not lose sight of that
