Do I get my long hair chopped into a bob?

Been deliberating about this for ages. Got long dark hair with a fringe. Took me three years to dare to get a fringe (not very adventurous when it comes to getting my hair done differently!) and I love it and now wondering about a bob. I've had one before - when I was a lot younger but think it would look current and fit in with my lifestyle (16-month old and another soon to be on the way). I rarely tie my hair back (except when it's a mess and I can't be bothered to wash it. I'm 32, slim and tall if that makes a difference.

I'd do it. I have a bob and it's so easy to keep.
what were you thinking, one length like danni minogue or layers like katie holmes?

Mimi1977 · 06/01/2010 13:40

I think like Danni Minogue. I love long hair and think it looks so feminine but I spend so long drying it every day (well every other day) Just fancy a change.

I'd go for it- long and straight with a fringe can look a bit Alice in Wonderland-ish if you are not a teenager.
And straight long hair is not usually very flattering unless you have perfect features.

Mimi1977 · 06/01/2010 13:50

It's got a bit of a wave to it and is layered at the moment rather than long and straight Purple - I wish it was straighter than it was but anyway! My hairdresser keeps telling me how lovely it is and I could regret a bob which isn't helping!! I'm thinking with hair straightners I could stop it being too wavy.

okay- but I still think that long and straight ish is a no no once you ar eolder UNLESS- and you might have!- really lovely hair in great shiny condition, and really good features. If you have, that's fine. However, people also say you should update your hair every 5 years or else you just start to look dated.

MrsSeanBean · 06/01/2010 14:03

Have you ever gone from long to short (i.e. quite a drastic change) before?

I would counsel caution. You may regret it! Perhaps a less dramatic change - slightly shorter, more (long) layers. Work on growing out fringe? I must admit I am not a fan of the 'blunt fringe with long hair' look. (Bit too schoolgirl-ish imho.)

Hello,

I am thinking about the same thing ! My hair is long and it´s a bit boring so i often tie it back, but I used to have a bob which looked nice.

My DH and my DCs are very vocal about me NOT cutting it off, as they all like to stroke it.

I bought hair straighteners a month ago, and I love the control you get (if you have the time!).

I am not sure yet what I´ll do. Will watch your decision with interest!

VerityBrulee · 06/01/2010 14:28

I would go for it, but keep it just long enough to tie back so you have another 'look'.

Anyone I know who has gone from long to a bob has looked years younger

purplepeony · 06/01/2010 14:29

Hair grows!!!

I went from almost shoulder length straight, no fringe, all one length, to short, layered Princess-Di style overnight. Great . Best thing ever. Now slightly longer- more a layered bob, chin length.

Maybe you should consider another hairdresser who has a few ideas?

MrsSeanBean · 06/01/2010 14:29

From my long (and often painful) experience, long hair often feels boring and a nuisance (longer to dry etc) but looks better. That is if it suits you of course!

Study some pics of yourself honestly, if available, with long and short hair.

You can do more with long hair. I know this often involves the refrain of 'I just tie it back' but this isn't necessarily a bad thing if it's well taken care of and not just an excuse not to bother. With long hair, you can have it long, or put it up and have it 'short'. I prefer the flexibility of long hair - but I am one of those people who just doesn't feel right with shorter hair.

TBH, I wouldn't cut your hair when you will have two very small children soon. I grew my hair out of a lovely bob as I just didn't have time to wash and style it every morning, wheras my very long hair doesn't need washing as often and can just be clipped back wet if I need to

MrsSeanBean · 06/01/2010 14:32

Purple - sure, it grows - but there are few things more annoying than a really annoying in-between look if you hate it short and are desperate to re-grow.

MrsSeanBean · 06/01/2010 14:34

CMOT - that is very true! Once 'done' my hair looks good for about 4-5 days.

purplepeony · 06/01/2010 14:36

CMOT- I think the idea is to get a wash 'n wear cut. I have very fine hair but if I blow dry it when washed - every other day - then all Ihave todo is drag a brush through it each morning and it looks fine ( hopefully other people think so too!)

It's all in the cut.

GetOrfMoiLand · 06/01/2010 14:38

I would advise caution. If I were you I would have it cut to mid length, with a few layers, rather than the drastic option of a bob. You can get to bob like gradually if you like the shorter length.

I used to have longish hair and had it cut into a graduated bob, I hated it at first. For some reason (and this is silly) but as soon as I had it cut I felt frumpy and sensible, and older. For me longer hair felt younger.

I am growing it but bloody hell it's slow, and I don't think it will grow as long as it did. I certainly preferred the feel of longer hair.

GetOrfMoiLand · 06/01/2010 14:40

'get to bob like gradually'. What did I mean there? I think bob length gradually.

God sometimes I sound as yokellish as my name

CMOTdibbler · 06/01/2010 14:55

But for me, the time to blow dry my hair properly just isn't there, and when short, my fairly fine (but lots of it) hair pings up when the weather is damp and looks mad.

The cut was great - it's just my time for hair styling tolerance is low

purplepeony · 06/01/2010 14:59

Oh well. Takes me 15 mins flat to blow dry mine or slightly longer if for a special occasion- very fine but lots of it. I let it dry naturally first- they say it should be 75% dry before you blow dry/style it.

GetOrfMoiLand · 06/01/2010 15:00

Have to wash and blow dry my hair every day or I look like a loon.

Only takes 10 minutes anyway.

Feierabend · 06/01/2010 15:12

Okay, I've done this 2 or 3 times. I loved the new look for a few weeks, then started to regret it, and my hair took forever to grow back. I think you're either a long hair or a short hair person at heart, and I am definitely the former. Good luck with the decision.

MattSmithIsNotMyLoveSlave · 06/01/2010 15:13

Not in this weather. Wear it coiled in plaits Princess Leia-style over your ears to keep them warm and then reconsider the bob when it warms up a bit. Saves on heating, which makes it the environmentally responsible option...

My hairdresser used to say that he would generally refuse to do a drastic restyle on a pregnant woman, because in his experience about 90% of them regretted it later. He said when you are pregnant your hair tends to behave differently and your face may be a different shape, so it's a staggeringly bad time to make any big changes.

GeorginaWorsley · 06/01/2010 16:21

Went from bra length to shoulder length layered bob last week and like it.
My longer hair had gone 'bitty' and unless just washed looked a mess,I felt anyway.
I hate putting it up too, feel too old at 43 for a ponytail!
At this length it loks more groomed, ifyswim, but I still feel like it is longer hair.
I think shoulder length or just below ,blunt cut at ends but long layers throughout ids great.

MuffinToptheMule · 06/01/2010 16:26

I read the thread title as 'Do I get this long hair chopped from my boob'.

traceybath · 06/01/2010 16:32

I'm contemplating the same as feel my longer hair drags my face down and makes me look older.

Choppy bob/proper style is what I'm after.
