Jeans for the hourglass figure? Not lowcut, hopefully.

I never have time to shop and I usually don't much care what I wear. So I end up buying in charity shops -- which is fine for Green reasons, but I am getting fed up with poor fit.

I'd like jeans that

  1. stay up without a belt,
  2. sit more than 3mm above my hips (1 & 2 go together, really)
  3. Don't cost the earth (since I'm used to charity shop prices)

Radically, I have curves: wide hips and narrow waist. Most things that fit over my hips are many inches too wide in my waist. Is there a make or brand of jeans more likely to fit someone with an old-fashioned figure? I think that Levi 501s used to be good for me, but is their cut the same now? Which shop(s) should I visit first? Any advice to expedite my search appreciated.

Gap used to do curvy fit jeans which were perfect for those of us with a smaller dress size at the waist than at the hips.

mamakoukla · 03/01/2010 19:28

Bootcut jeans from Next weren't so gapey at the waist and the little flare helps balance out the hips a bit.

JaneiteIsTrite · 03/01/2010 19:30

I have some Next one s- rubbish: I really don't recommend them. They fitted in the shop but after one wear were huge on the waist.

Gap - most of them are very low-rise which is a real pain as they look lovely on the leg.

Bumping for you. I have the added disadvantage of being a short-arse too.

BrokenArm · 03/01/2010 19:33

Yeah, that's what it is, 1 or 2 smaller dress size at waist than hips.

Bump.

I also have this problem. Also find that Next jeans fit ok for the first day and then become too loose round the waist.

Watching with interest as I have all but given up on jeans for the same reasons.
Esp annoying is when they seem to fit ok in the shop but gape at the back within a few hours of wearing and before you know it you have to keep pulling them up to cover the muffin-top.
My best so far have been £15 M+S jobs but they tend towards frumpy.

Effjay · 03/01/2010 19:57

I went into the Gap store with exactly this problem and they recommended 'curvy fit' (also mentioned above). They're flattering on me and happy to recommend them.

nigglewiggle · 03/01/2010 19:58

I have the £12 "frumpy" ones from M&S and I must say that when I wear them - it's the only time I get complimented!

jumpyjan · 03/01/2010 20:10

Another vote for Gap Curvy. The sales assistant said they are great for mums of toddlers/babys as you can bend down without showing your arse off as they come up quite high.

JaneiteIsTrite · 03/01/2010 20:14

I bought the M&S ones and hardly wore them before charity-shopping them. They gaped horribly.

Montifer · 03/01/2010 20:21

Falmer jeans from Matalan could be what you need, they solved my jeans searching nightmare.

Although recommendation is rather lacking in glamour, they come in varying lengths for each size and lots of different styles.

The slouch style is perfect for my pear shape (average waist, huge saddlebags / arse) and all for the bargain price of £12

Best fitting jeans I've had in years.

PacificDogwood · 03/01/2010 20:26

JBrand Curvy Fit look like they would fit the bill, but the prices !
They have been recommended to me, but I have never been able to put that recommendation to the test...

gloomgirl · 03/01/2010 20:28

Im nearly 6ft a size 18 on the hip and probs a 16 or large 14 on the waist.
Primark long length high rise jeans are the best for me and at only £8 wont break the bank-and ive tried them all, long tall sally, m and s, next etc etc.

dexter73 · 03/01/2010 20:28

I have the Gap curvy jeans but can also recommend their boy fit jeans.

BrokenArm · 03/01/2010 22:32

Ooh! ta for replies -- I will try Gap 1st, then Matalan or Next. I am just under 5'8" so leg length not usually an issue.

I hate the thing about good fit in shop and then an enormous waist gap manifests itself once you wear them at home for 10 minutes, arrrggghhh!!!!

Following MN advice from earlier in the year I ventured into GAP and bought a pair of curvy fit jeans. Size 12 when my hips usually require a size 14 so that pleased me. And they were reduced to £20 in the sale so that was even better.
And I can confirm that when I bend down the back doens't gape to reveal my knickers.
I think I am in love with them...

OurLadyOfPerpetualSupper · 03/01/2010 23:32

I always go for Scarlet jeans from Oasis - high enough waist, no belt necessary, nice and tight on the thighs but bootcut below - v. flattering. Cost about £30 and come in black, dark blue and light blue.

(My hips are 4 inches bigger than my waist.)

OurLadyOfPerpetualSupper · 03/01/2010 23:33

Oh, and they're stretchy.

ClaireDeLoon · 03/01/2010 23:43

I bought the Gap curvy ones after seeing them recommended on here but they have stretched and no longer fit so well. Make sure you get them onthe snug side as have seen others comment about gap jeans stretching a lot.

PureAsTheColdDrivenSnow · 03/01/2010 23:49

my hips are about 14" bigger than my waist

jeans have always been tricksy for me - M&S autograph are ok. Next one's fit, but either wear out or stretch on first wash (never buying from next again)

If you're less than a size 16, then go to levi's! they'll help you with the fit.

GothDetective · 04/01/2010 15:11

Just got back from Gap. Tried the curvy fit ones on in a 14 and they were a bit tight but the 16s were huge and gapey round the waist.

So decided I'd get the 14 as I've put 4lbs on over Xmas which should be lost in the next week or 2, plus the shop assistant said they would give a bit. But they don't do them in a 30" length.

So I ended up getting the Boot cut fit in a 14 as they come in the shorter length. They're a bit snug so hoping they give with wear rather than shrink in the wash!

dexter73 · 04/01/2010 15:18

You have to buy Gap jeans tight as they give quite a lot when you wear them so I think they should be fine.

GothDetective · 04/01/2010 15:31

Thats reassuring, thanks.
