Anyone interested in a "use it all up", "don't buy any new clothes this year" thread?

This may come across as a rather anti-Style and Beauty thread...

For all kinds of reasons - we're a bit stretched financially this year; environmental & ethical; intellectual, etc - I've been thinking that this year, I ought to try to:

a) use up all the beauty products I've accumulated before buying new ones

b) try not to buy any new clothes (except necessities, such as tights, should I ladder them, etc.), as I own lots of nice clothes and, frankly, although I really adore shopping for new clothes and having nice new things to wear, I simply don't need them; plus, I've come to feel that I ought not to buy clothes that are not ethically sourced, if I can manage it, and this is quite difficult - so what's more environmentally friendly or ethical than not buying anything at all?

Anyway. I realise that this is rather self-indulgent, and it's a luxury of a kind to choose not to buy more stuff (I say this because I know that there are many on MN who don't have much to spend on themselves). However, I was hoping to find some like-minded souls who might like to support me in giving up my shopping addictions.

I know this is entirely vacuous and frivolous , but we could (occasionally) post what we're wearing, how we're accessorizing or innovating to make our old wardrobe feel new, etc. Obviously, this thread might appeal to people who are already thrifty (kudos!) and who might be able to give tips, etc.

So, is there anyone out there who wants to join my challenge?

Lulamama - am loving the printed linen tunic from Boden and the merino tunic. I bought last years' spring/summer version in magenta. It's gorgeous and look fab with leggings & ankle boots, skinny jeans or white cropped trousers (I bought the slim leg crops last year and they are very flattering).

Happy Home - are you finding lots of gaps? I have to accept that there are many things which are going to be ebayed or charity shopped as they are just too random!

tulpe · 22/01/2010 18:58

Marsha I have a breton jumper on my wish list too. I have a couple of navy & white striped tops but they just don't cut the mustard, frankly. Let me know if you find something delicious.

HappyHome · 22/01/2010 19:01

I have two bin bags in the back of the car ready to go to the charity shop in the morning!!! There are now LOTS of gaps

Lulamama - love that bag!

MarshaBrady · 22/01/2010 19:11

Tulpe check these, nice I think slouchy one here

cashmere one

I haven't really thought about affordability yet! just doing serious looking, getting ready to strike haha

Lulumama · 22/01/2010 19:13

I also have the merino tunic from last year, bought two in teh sale

i am currently wearing boden pintuck tunic, again, bought two in teh sale

their tunics really suit my shape, they are long but not baggy but not too clingy

wore the magenta one last year with wide leg white linen trousers and got many compliments

Lulumama · 22/01/2010 19:14

that puts the boden prices in perspective !

MarshaBrady · 22/01/2010 19:16

I can't afford them Lulu really, I just got carried away with the ease of creating an online wishlist!

Especially as I actually need shoes and a bag.

minko · 22/01/2010 19:19

Oh, I'd forgotten my early allegiance to this thread... I have bought a jumper and jeans today. Ooops! These are my first items this year though which is pretty good for me. And it was my birthday on Wednesday so can I be excused please...?

GeorginaWorsley · 22/01/2010 19:26

I have magenta one also Lulu and wore with white or cream linen trousers.
Am undecided whether to bo for the indigo or bluebell one this year.
Boden tunics suit me,hav ethe purple pintuck jersey one from this year that I wear as a dress with aforementioned Autograph grey merino tights and plum Clarks Mary Janes.
Love that outfit

Lulumama · 22/01/2010 19:30

i wear the black pintuck one with thick black tights and knee length black wedge boots and a black drapey cardi and heavy silver necklace. it is a good outfit i think.

i think you can be excused if it was your birthday.. but that;'s it now!

GeorginaWorsley · 22/01/2010 19:41

Sounds good Lulu.

Haha ltec I've gone boss-eyed from too much bf and putting together Internet lists of SS stuff. That and trying to find a belt.

But really am meant to be waiting a couple of weeks before buying... The other thread is a hot bed of gorgeous stuff, got sweats at that PS pink bag. I have a credit note.. My bag has to come from Liberty.. They are slow with ss. Weak

LetThemEatCake · 22/01/2010 23:50

Ladies, I'd love to join you. We are planning to buy a bigger house this year so money will be tight, and as I have just got my pre-pregnancy figure back I can rediscover my old wardrobe so I don't really need anything at all, except maybe a t-shirt or two (are those allowed?).

I have a cupboard full of beauty products and was just given two more bottles of yummy body lotion for Christmas so must use those up too, rather than always buying new stuff just because I like the packaging

I also want to try and spend as little as possible on the DDs.

So - I am wearing some very old bootcut Oasis jeans, which I have only recently got back into, two layered t-shirts from Esprit, and the Mumsnet haircut (I did it last week)

nowwhatdoido · 23/01/2010 09:41

I just can't seem to get out of my jeggings at the moment, wearing them nearly every day. But I love them.

Next jeggings
Brasher Bolivar brown boots
Gap longsleeved black tee
Espirit shortsleeved jersey tunic
Topshop charcoal grey long lined cardigan.
Boden Uptown coat - charcoal.

nowwhatdoido · 23/01/2010 09:42

The Esprit tunic is kind of mushroomy, with a ruched neckline.

Autograph(again)grey long asymmertic open cardigan, lovely and soft,a bit 'Travelwrap'
purple necklace
Purple/teal/silver scarf

noddyholder · 23/01/2010 12:59

I have started to wear a lot of my black stuff again after consigning it to the oxfam section of the wardrobe as I thought it washed me out!I seem to suit it again which is weird but am not complaining it will save me £££££££

Penthesileia · 23/01/2010 13:08

Hey everyone! Sorry I've been awol. Had a really, really busy week at work (and no end in sight... ), so working in the evenings and no time to MN!

I'm still on the bandwagon! Hurrah!

Even went for a stroll round town today, and browsed a few sales... And nothing - nothing! - stood out and said "I am so nice, you have to have me!" (was thinking about my "would I buy it at full price?" rule. So feeling very smug and in control. Feeling confirmed by my walking past tempting pick-n-mix stall in the shopping centre - and I resisted!

Anyway. Feeling really good still about not buying anything. It's a weird kind of relief, actually. Just opting out of it all for a while.

Plus, have used up my Clarins moisturiser and am on to an Elemis one that was queueing up in my bathroom...

Hope everyone's ok. Saw LTEC's new thread. Great idea - and next year, if there's a variant still running, I shall join that one.
