Maternity dungarees - yes or no???

gerbo · 22/12/2009 21:31

I'm finding all my jeans are beginning to become just too uncomfortable (30 weeks pregnant) and was wondering about a pair of dungarees... I'm a size 10 but expanding and long to be comfy!

The ONLY ones I can find (as Ebay seems very lacking) are Mothercare ones at £35 - seems a lot but then if I wear them day in, day out, for 10 weeks surely that's worth the late purchase?

Anyone bought these? Are they a big or small fit?? Any general thoughts - are dungarees just too 80s'??! Or too naff? Or a godsend?!

I don't own any so can't comment on the comfort factor but inside I am screaming nooooo!

JacksmamaInAPearTree · 22/12/2009 21:33

They're horrible and will make you look the size of the Albert Hall. They are not a good look.

Could you try yoga bottoms and a comfy stretchy top?

traceybath · 22/12/2009 21:34

From a style perspective - no.

Have you tried jersey roll top trousers - I found those comfy and reasonably stylish.

bluesparklypartydress · 22/12/2009 21:36

It's 10 yrs since I was pg but remember H&M did really good maternity jeans with (adjustable) waistband above the bump, no stretchy panels involved - did me up to 41 weeks! Not sure what their maternity stuff is like these days

Isaidno · 22/12/2009 21:38

not a good look, but who cares if you're comfy??

Lamazed · 22/12/2009 21:38

I really wanted some when I was pregnant last time but wasn't allowed - everyone I consulted with said no. You can't get them anywhere because they're so awful!

I remember how you feel and sympathise - leggings and dresses were the only thing I could wear in the last 10 weeks.

gerbo · 22/12/2009 21:38

Oh no! I don't drive so tramp around town all day (rain, snow, sleet) doing errands and taking dd to preschool, etc., so I just don't think jersey trousers would cut it, tucked into my wellies....Maybe they would though - I just don't know - where would you buy them from? Or yoga trousers?

Noooooooooooo

traceybath · 22/12/2009 21:49

for home

and then I'd be tempted to do leggings or slim fit jeans tucked into boots for out and about. I had some ok ones from mamas and papas this year.

gerbo · 22/12/2009 21:50

Feeling as I think it's a no-no after all! Maybe I should go try the Mothercare ones first - £35 is too much to risk online...

There are jersey topped maternity jeans or worky type trousers if you don't want jersey all down your legs. A friend of mine had a pair of dungerees...and a big part of me just goes nnooooooooooooo. If you get the mat trousers that go right up over your bump they IME stay up well, keep your bump warm and are comfy

Try looking at mothercare.

greensnail · 22/12/2009 21:55

If you want some then get them. DH bought me a pair when i was pg with DD as i really wanted some but he only got them 2 weeks before DD was born and I was too big for them . I'm pg again though and am hoping they'll fit this time as I'm a bit thinner and I'm really looking forward to wearing them.

Rindercella · 22/12/2009 22:03

I always remember seeing a pg friend of mine years & years ago (her DD is about 17 now). She was only little - not quite 5'1" and was very round in late pregnancy. She wore stripey dungarees, which made her look like a giant beach ball.

Thankfully maternity wear has come on since then, and you now have a choice!

Ewe · 22/12/2009 22:06

NOOOO! You'll thank us all looking back, promise.

Maternity leggings or jeggings with long tops?

gerbo · 22/12/2009 22:10

Hmmm - I bought a pair of black leggings and frankly despite being an 8-10 (non pregnant) my legs are bad and I think they look pretty bad! My legs have never been great (chunkyish and just not a good shape) and no tops I own are really longer than hip level - where does everyone buy these long tops?

Money's tight () as I just gave up work () so I need a simple solution. I'm beginning to think the dungs aren't the answer tho...

The ONLY time you can wear dungarees IS when you are pg or 0-4yrs.

(unless of course you're doing a Fame revival)

Comfort is everything when pg.

traceybath · 22/12/2009 22:18

I had these jeans and they didn't fall down.

Am also a size 8 and wore them tucked into boots.

Do you have a long cardigan? I'd wear that with leggings/jeans and a tight fitting top tucked into boots.

And a nice cosy scarf too.

Good thing about bump is always makes legs look slimmer.

MrsBadger · 22/12/2009 22:20

DH said (very wisely) to me that if I wouldn;t wear it when not pg I shouldn't wear it at all (see also hideous flowery prints etc)

another vote for over-bump trous here - the Jojo Maman Bebe sale has just started online so you may get lucky. If not ebay is a good idea, or have you a Next To Nothing ie Next clearance shop near you? they often have random matwear.

MaggieAnFiaRua · 22/12/2009 22:21

no.

DarrellRivers · 22/12/2009 22:22

I've just ordered these although do dream of how comfortable dungarees must be
I will not be wearing them with high heels and vest top, more lots of layered tops/long length tops and ballet pums or furry boots in this freezing weather

DarrellRivers · 22/12/2009 22:24

Although looks like blooming marvellous do some for £11, may pop in tomorrow to buy some
here

NancyDrewRocks · 23/12/2009 07:30

Nooooooooooooooo don't do it - you will look ridiculous and look back at your bump photos and cry and not because you are a hormonal mother.

Find some jersey topped over the bump jeans - which have the added benefit of being shug and cosy and consider yourself as having had a lucky escape

TheApprentice · 23/12/2009 07:40

the title of this thread alone made me laugh as it brought back some funny memories....when i was pg with ds1 DH was always teasing me saying "you know you need dungarees"etc, and I was adamant I was not going there........however, when I was pg with ds2 I had real problems finding any trousers that would stay up (I think this depends on the shape of you, and your bump), and in the end I was desperate for dungies! And then I couldnt find any.........but got some shorty ones on ebay (as it was summer) and no, they weren't a good look but they were soooooo comfy and by then I looked pretty ridiculous anyway so I figured what did it matter?

Dungarees rock!

BlueKangerooWonders · 23/12/2009 08:34

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO from a looks point of view! Added to which have you forgotten how often pg women need to wee? You'd never be out of the bathroom.

sockmonkey · 23/12/2009 08:55

I wear dungerees sometimes, I like 'em (36+2) although I do look like tweedle-dum
