urgently needed! shoulder bag to be worn across the body

goldieandthreebears · 04/12/2009 12:07

Fellow MNetters,

I need a medium sized black bag to be worn across the body (so hands free to carry DCs junk precious posessions).

It has to be stylish enough for work - so not kipling type bags and cost around £100, but would go up to £150 for the right one

I need one of these too - in a smooth black leather for me, to go with my new boots, but maybe a little cheaper - will watch with interest!!
HUGE apologies to Goldie for appalling hijack attempt!

FromGirders · 04/12/2009 12:18

What about one of these? They all come in black too.

goldieandthreebears · 04/12/2009 12:26

forgot to add: it must have an outside pocket for oyster card/keys

goldieandthreebears · 04/12/2009 12:27

thanks FromGiders but really need the outside pocket. Can't stand rumaging round my bag to find oyster card!

I quite like the Radley x-shoulder bags. I have had one for years and I always go back to it. I have the large one, it has an open outside pocket at the front and a zipped one at the back.http://www.johnlewis.com/50594/Style.aspx like this
P.s I never show the dog on mine.

squashimodo · 04/12/2009 13:10

again

monkeysmama · 04/12/2009 13:21

I have this in black. Will try and find another photo because this isn't very good. It is expensive but brilliant. The front pocket has a magnetic closure so is great for mobile and oyster card and the bag hangs at your hand height so you can get it quickly and with minimal fuss (I wear mine back to front when I am somewhere other people might want quick access to my bag!)

It is deceptively roomy - it can hold nappy, toddler wipes, purse, phone, sun glasses, oyster card and other random bits of crap I carry everywhere. The See by Chloe range hasn't been universally acclaimed so I reckon you'll find one reduced somewhere. I think mine was about £200.

goldieandthreebears · 04/12/2009 13:21

hmmm quite like that one squashimodo. Might pop in to JL this weekend

VerityBrulee · 04/12/2009 13:25

I got dh a lovely one for christmas at some stage. Look in mens depts and you will find lovely ones in your budget.

TutTutter · 04/12/2009 13:30

with that budget i would seriously consider a used mulberry or similar - they have a few cross-body styles

e.g. cgi.ebay.co.uk/Mulberry-Black-Cross-Body-Bag-Grab-a-bargain_W0QQitemZ280431433875QQcmdZViewItemQQptZ WomensBags?hash=item414b041893

goldieandthreebears · 04/12/2009 13:33

monkeys can't see to open your link. found this one though here but definitely can't afford it

OP posts:
Doyouthinktheysaurus · 04/12/2009 13:49

I have a Mulberry one I got half price in the sale. 'Anthony' I think. The leather is so soft it's just beautiful. It cost about £180 but worth every penny.

PCPlumIsMyHomeboy · 04/12/2009 14:18

this looks nice

BendyBob · 04/12/2009 14:29

That is one gorgeous bag there that you linked to PCPlum.

I was going to suggest a leather messenger bag or satchel like these

I so wish I'd chosen a non mumsy changing bag when my dc were babies. I had the blimmin thing welded to me for years all told and looking back I could have been sporting something much nicer. So good on you OP for hunting out something you like.

goldieandthreebears · 04/12/2009 14:29

found this one I know it's not black, but I love this colour. It says medium do you think it would fit a purse, umbrella and book???

or this one

OP posts:
TutTutter · 04/12/2009 15:47

sigh

i've been away from mn for a while

i've forgotten how irritating it is when people ask for help then ignore helpful suggestions

the polite thing it to thank posters, or at least acknowledge their replies, op

otherwise people may not bother again

goldieandthreebears · 04/12/2009 16:25

tut sorry, didn't mean to offend you. didn't think the discussion was over and was planning to thank everyone later. Sorry if that is not mumsnet etiquette!

It is not really fair to make the assumption that just because I am relatively new I am rude. If you search other threads you will notice that I do go back and thank people that have the courtesy to answer my question. I have been lurking around for years but only recently plucked the courage to actually ask a question. I don't I'll be doing it again soon.

I did like the mulberry bag you suggested, but I am addicted to the smell of new leather!

So PLP, Bendy, Tut, Doyouthink, fromgirders, squashimodo, monkeys and verity thank you all for your suggestions. I shall do my research tonight after DCs have gone to bed, there is plenty to look at.

Hey Goldie

Let us know what you end up getting! Don't be afraid to post again. Just like in rl there are lots of different people on here.

goodnightmoon · 04/12/2009 21:06

someone on another thread mentioned these

www.mimiberry.co.uk/collection/bags/1_mimi-classic-elsie-satchel

the other day and i rather fancy the red or yellow one, not dirt cheap though.

kateecass · 04/12/2009 21:43

That is sooo nice Goodnightmoon, but expensive.

I'm only just dipping my toes in this handbag malarky. Have always had cheapo ones, or hand-me-downs, which is a bit sad given I'm almost 40.

I got a bargain Mulberry small, crossbody bag in Bicester the other week. I had to phone DH before buying it to check I wasn't going nuts!!

monkeysmama · 04/12/2009 21:51

I tend to spend the money I have on shoes, bags, sunglasses. The majority of my clothes are highstreet but a nice bag & good boots can do wonders for a £10 H&M dress.

AngryPixie · 04/12/2009 22:18

I love this and great price

monkeysmama · 04/12/2009 22:22

That's lovely Angry - I am going to sleep on it (the idea not bag) but may get one for my mum for Christmas. Thank you!

FromGirders · 04/12/2009 22:24

What a lot of lovely links! Wonder what I can justify . . .

FromGirders · 04/12/2009 22:28

Really love AngryPixies link . . . and even in my budget.
