No idea what to wear to Christening.

My neice is being christened on the 20th December. I have nothing to wear and no idea what to buy. I was thinking of a dress but not sure what style suits me really and I don't want to be freezing.

I am a size 18 and I have a large stomach. I am 5'8" and my legs are ok.

I can't wear wool as it makes me itch really badly and I come out in a rash.

Thanks.

It is formal. MIL was talking about hats and fascinators the other day as if it was a royal wedding.

Hi

I have my sons this weekend and size 14/16 with stomach issues and have got from GAP a purple shift type dress and long boyfriend cardy from Tesco. They also do it in navy with lighter swirls can be dressed up or down so could be worn after?

Also how about this from MS?

This is lovely on and not itchy (I have wool issues as well!)

Or this with some funky tights and heals?

Stylelostinlabour · 23/11/2009 12:39

oops sorry rubbish at links but copy/paste to look

Stylelostinlabour · 23/11/2009 17:36

It's a dodgy keyboard with has had too much G&T spilt on it over the years so puts random keys in when not expected - it can be a rather inapproriate laptop at times just like it's owner!

Stylelostinlabour · 23/11/2009 17:38

see that should have said "which" not with

FlorenceandtheWashingMachine · 23/11/2009 18:10

I love the colour of this dress and its vintage style. The dresses I have tried on from the 125 years range have been very well cut and flattering. You could wear it with a fake fur jacket (to avoid hypothermia) and some suede platform shoes or knee-length boots.

Magenta M&S dress

Stylelostinlabour · 23/11/2009 19:03

Sorry to butt in on post but where does one get suede platform shoes from? I'm need some

KristinaM · 23/11/2009 19:09

really?? I have been to several christenings ( Roman Catholic and Protestant) and have never seen anyone in a hat or fascinator

well, apart from someone's great granny in a wee woolly hat

don't you have ANYTHING that would do? what do you have that's ok - smart trousers or decent skirt? boots? don't go out and buy a dress if you won't wear it again

FlorenceandtheWashingMachine · 23/11/2009 19:14

Any colour in particular? Budget?

jjdal26 · 23/11/2009 19:25

Stylelostinlabour, have a look here for some ideas on the suede platform front:

Stylelostinlabour · 23/11/2009 21:10

Thanks fab site!

Kayzr · 24/11/2009 07:02

Thanks for all the links. I don't really have anything that I can wear. I have a lovely dress but I think it is too revealing up top for a Christening.

Florence, that dress is gorgeous.

I don't want to spend more than £60 and I don't mind any colour but I don't really like very bold patterns.

Would this be terrible or could it work?

OP posts:
KristinaM · 24/11/2009 08:51

its a lovely colour, but not sure if you would feel comfortable if you have tummy issues

FlorenceandtheWashingMachine · 24/11/2009 10:40

Not keen on sweater dress. This is lovely:

John Lewis dress

It's a very flattering style. I prefer the purple but the black is in stock and you could wear it with boots and a gorgeous pashmina-style wrap to keep you cosy.

Kayzr · 25/11/2009 07:48

Ooh that is gorgeous!! I also prefer the purple but the black is nice too.

JL dress is really lovely - it'd be worth phoning round the stores to see if you can find it anywhere. They're usually v happy to parcel and post direct.

Kayzr · 25/11/2009 08:37

We haven't got a JL anywhere near us. Could try ringing them.

John Lewis on line is really good. I've ordered a lot of clothes recently and it's been very quick.
