Duvet coats - worth getting or just fashion flash-in-the-pan?

Jewelsandgems · 12/11/2009 21:05

I have always stayed away from anything remotely 'puffa'. But then the other day I saw this woman wearing a 'duvet' coat. And it looked great on her. It was belted, with a nice standy-up collar and was a lovely shade of inky navy blue.

I really fancy getting one for this winter, but I don't want to bother if they are just a 1 season thing - in that case I will buy something more timeless (I.E the usual wool kinda coat)

Have any of you got one? Seen any nice ones? Where? General opinion on them?

(also, because of all the 'duvet'ness do they just make your body look huge, and legs look silly skinny?)

Any assistance appreciated,
J&G

Unless you have the body of a supermodel and a budget to match you will look like you are dressed for being ill on the sofa or waving at a child in a gymkhana. Please don't.

AnnaSui · 12/11/2009 21:22

Well, I wouldn't spend northface money on one, but got one from landsend last year and I don't regret it. when it's really, really, really bloody cold, I am very glad I have it.

Jewelsandgems · 12/11/2009 21:23

But I do like this.

So, what you say is true Per! Looks great on the model, and is super-expensive!

I have a Lands End down one. Yes, it's not glam, but it is so amazingly warm and snuggly I adore it. Warm even in -30 temperatures

PerArduaAdNauseum · 12/11/2009 21:28

Oh but it doesn't look good when it's open - they just have no drape. I love drape.

Bonsoir · 12/11/2009 21:29

Don't do this to yourself. Duvet coats are for children and old ladies only - my mother has one, as does my daughter. My mother's 75 year old friend has one!

Bonsoir · 12/11/2009 21:30

Very chavvy expensive duvet coats (aka Moncler) are also not desirable.

AnnaSui · 12/11/2009 21:31

Bonsoir, it's not as cold in France though.... there are days when I am prepared to go out looking a bit like a duvet.

GhoulsAreLoud · 12/11/2009 21:32

What the hell is a duvet coat?

Sounds suspiciously exactly like a puffa jacket to me, in which case no, no, no, no, no.

suggy · 12/11/2009 21:32

my husband says I look council but like the woman above its cold UP norff... and I think come the snow I will be glad of it. Esp keeping the tops of my legs warm... Still; undecided - may send back. It was on offer and got it for £50. I feel like Mindy from Mork and Mindy... I am 10/12 and 5 7, all warm clothes bulk you up.

Jewelsandgems · 12/11/2009 21:33

So the lands end one, how long is yours? Do you wear it belted?

Per Oh yes I concur re the drape. It looks terrible open; and for that amount of money, it should look fantastic every which way.

I am thinking a normal coat is the way to go....

I look at that coat suggy and I can only see it working with a 15yo Japanese face in the hood...

Ewe · 12/11/2009 21:36

No, no, no! They aren't even in fashion particularly, they've always been around and people have always worn them (slebs often wear them because they can pull it off as young/tall/thin/gorgeous).

Most people however look utterly ridiculous in them but if you don't mind that I do hear they are nice and warm

PerArduaAdNauseum · 12/11/2009 21:38

Well I can see they're efficient - we had something very much like it round our hot water tank for years

Jewelsandgems · 12/11/2009 21:40

suggy that coat sure looks warm. And not a bad price either - I like the grey colour too. Is it that shiny in real life? How is the sleeve length?

(that website is so annoying! I could only get it to show whole coat through the zoom function!)

Jewelsandgems · 12/11/2009 21:43

Ewe the ones I have seen and like are more like the net-a-porter one with small 'puffs' and collar like that Malandrino one. And they seem to be everywhere right now!

AnnaSui · 12/11/2009 21:44

my lands end one is not belted and it comes down to my knees. I don't wear it unless it is very cold though. But when I do, people stroke it and say, "is that warm?" as they shiver in their belted tweed.

AnnaSui · 12/11/2009 21:46

like walking along in bed

Jewelsandgems · 12/11/2009 21:48

Wow this looks warm

Zara have lovely ones, usually belted.

For warmth nothing compares to them, if you spend a lots of time on parks and playgrounds, a duvet coat will transform your life

That's very like the 995 net a porter one!! it looks nice.

Veritybrulee, I agree, ifyou're out and about a lot, then being truly warm outranks knowing that you have the loveliest coat

Jewelsandgems · 12/11/2009 21:56

Verty and Anna yes I am out and about alot. Currently, I look out of window to judge weather and dress accordingly, and then sometimes have to change before we go out of house for more 'weather-hardy' clothes.

DH has a massive North Face parka and he can chuck it on at a moments notice and be ready for any weather...whilst I don;t seem to have one coat that can cover all possibilities. And we are in Scotland, so the weather can change so quickly!

They've been in 'fashion' in various guises since at least '06, one of my clients is a consumer glossy and I remember seeing them outside after a meeting in duvet coats, puffing away on cigarettes and looking vaguely hungry

Zara is a good call though, next best thing to the net-a-porter versions although they have some really lovely other styles in there too!

EdgarAllenPoo · 12/11/2009 22:00

noa noa had a quilted coat this one

that i thought was very nice, though that is a rubbish photo.

I tried it on in the shop, and it felt lovely and warm, and well shaped too.
