Duvet coats - worth getting or just fashion flash-in-the-pan?

I have always stayed away from anything remotely 'puffa'. But then the other day I saw this woman wearing a 'duvet' coat. And it looked great on her. It was belted, with a nice standy-up collar and was a lovely shade of inky navy blue.

I really fancy getting one for this winter, but I don't want to bother if they are just a 1 season thing - in that case I will buy something more timeless (I.E the usual wool kinda coat)

Have any of you got one? Seen any nice ones? Where? General opinion on them?

(also, because of all the 'duvet'ness do they just make your body look huge, and legs look silly skinny?)

Any assistance appreciated,
J&G

Oh you're in Scotland! That changes things, get one

Yes the uniqlo one is that shiny. Arm length good too. Will prob return as it is so shiny... but I keep getting told the winter will be hard this year...

TheChewyToffeeMum · 13/11/2009 08:59

I have just ordered this from Uniqlo - it is a bit less shiny than the other one.

I too used to think they were hideous (and still do!) but it was v. cold here (Scotland) on Monday and my lovely thick full length Zara woolen coat was just not warm enough for hanging around watching trains with my 3yr old.

I also think shiny means the water floats off rather than sinks in... I tried on a v expensive North Face one and it didn't look much better.

Mmmm I remain undecided. The warm factor is great and so I am going to go to Zara abd try one of theirs on, to see if the duvet style suits, and looks nice with my normal boots.

Thanks for all your help ladies

Why not just lop the bottom off a sleeping bag and have done with it? We'll be able to hear you coming if you do get one at least- all that rustling nylon!

Feelingforty · 13/11/2009 10:39

I've been wearing a landsend one for about 10 years - I'd never go back to a wool coat.

it's not shiny & it's the warmest thing ever, so whilst everyone is looking pinched, I'm toasty

I decided this year we had to get winter coats from a cold country. So DD's is from H&M and mine is from Land's End (Stadium Squall).

Around here they seem to be in the "in" thing. The other day I spotted a mum who has always been such a fashion snob wearing one and I was shocked. I would look bloody awful in one so I will give this latest "trend" a miss.

i saw a few women in my local starbucks with them this morning and they all managed to look quite good.

Some are well cut so you at least look like you have a figure underneath the coat. I had a great one from Mango that went in at the waist and had a lovely shawl collar, it was a really flattering cut. I replaced it with a J Crew one because the black was doing me no favours.

If you look hard enough you can find a stylish version. No wool coat could ever keep you as warm.
