I just cannot work out this shop... is there a method to the madness?

How/when are the best times to shop? (presumably never with a child!!!)

Any tips?
I am sure there are great bargains to be had, I just don't have the time etc to sift through the merchandise!

That's interesting boxers for men, not the other way round.

At least I don't think so.

?

You reminded me, Jan - I did get clothes once. Calvin Klein knickers!

Janh · 18/06/2005 22:24

Lambretta, unicorn?

Evesmama · 18/06/2005 22:26

i feel the same, but never buy my picture frames from anywhere else!!!

unicorn · 18/06/2005 22:29

never even got as far as men's boxers...(thank god!)

The women's strange, european (?) apparel has had me transfixed.. (should I be interested in this ecletic, multi coloured shirt, just because it was previously priced at 125 pounds?!!!)

Am I strange I find it easy to understand, each type of clothes are sorted into sections e.g. jeans, shirts, t-shirts etc. Within each section clothes are sorted into sizes. These sections are repeated in the reduced and larger size areas.

I start at the reduced bit, then round the other areas looking for my size, I love red so I usually just look for red stuff. I hate looking for jeans though but that is the same for anywhere.

Speak to the staff and try to find out when they put deliveries out so you can pounce on the new stuff.

My most recent purchase was a pair of sallopettes handy for this weekends heat wave .

What are these strange expressions... quiet moment??? without children???

TinyGang · 18/06/2005 23:02

I seem to develop a nervous tic recalling the time we went there with the children to look at the shoes. Dear god - never NEVER again. I long ago reached the conclusion that shopping with my children is only possible if either they or me or preferably all of us are heavily sedated. Otherwise - forget it.

I have found the odd excellent bargain in TKMaxx, but you need a lifetime to trawl through it all. Some of it is still quite pricey too but just all stuffed in together like a car boot sale.

TinyGang · 18/06/2005 23:10

Also lol at Unicorn's post - yes, some of it is a bit, er, strange. I thought I'd fallen in love with a very 'unusual' outfit for my little dd, but when I tried it on her at home it looked like a circus costume. Looked all bright fun primary colours in the shop, but just plain bonkers actually on her! (I took it back)

Nightynight · 18/06/2005 23:32

I love TK Maxx. Bought an indian top there last weekend for 16 gbp. It the rrp was 45, but it was worth 16 anyway!

TwinSetAndPearls · 18/06/2005 23:38

I buy a lot of mine and dd clothes from TK Maxx, biught her a beautiful skirt a couple of weeks ago, pink cotton with butterflies on and a pink net underneath with a lace showing at hem. Paid £5.99 and saw it in Kendals in manchester today for £34.99.

TwinSetAndPearls · 18/06/2005 23:40

Also got her a gorgeus Uttam wool shaagy coat for £15 and a really cute set of ralph lauren dungaree shorts that were a real bargain. Got soime fab wool cushions on my sofa, bought 6 for £24, saw similar ones in Selfridges for £30 each. I could go on, but you have to be focussed and go in with an idea of what you are looking for.

SoupDragon · 19/06/2005 07:53

Snafu, there are two in Croydon. We are clearly a quality area

Toys are good value - I often stock up on birthday presents if I'm there. Best bargains were 2 TMNTurtle water gun thingies priced at £9.99 each (half price) which they forgot to charge me for.

Tinker · 19/06/2005 09:43

Household stuff is great (loads of enamelware) and teh girls clothes are not too difficult to navigate. Got 2 Grobags for 1/2 price there yesterday. Don't really bother with teh women's stuff though - just too much to look at.

send my mother - she is the star shopper of tk maxx

it gives me shudders just thinking of it .. eeek shopping .. yuk, yuk

philippat · 19/06/2005 10:18

work day lunchtimes, don't even try with kids...

the secret is not to think of it as a normal shop where you wonder round, think 'that's a nice dress' 'ooh those are nice trousers' etc...

go when you want ONE thing like a blue t-shirt... then run down the aisle picking all the ones in your size... try them ALL on (can't get away with NOT trying on TKMAXX I find), laugh hysterically at yourself - at least one will be enormous and one too small to fit over your head - but with luck one will make you look like a goddess.

It really does work...

suzywong · 19/06/2005 10:23

I couldn't bear it myself, I'm not a good shopper at the best of times

my dh pines for the one in Wood Green
He used to come away with some fantastic stuff

My turquoise ballerina trainers have drawn admiring comments from no less than five envious pals since my last flying visit to TKMaxx! love them, love it! (£24.99... diesel...)

expatinscotland · 19/06/2005 22:36

I find it far more frightening than IKEA.
