HELP - Work Xmas Party for a generously neigh, truth be told, fat lady

Ok, I know we've got ages to go, but I also know that it'll take me forever to find something I feel comfortable wearing. Works do - will be pretty posh and it's a James Bond/cocktail dress themed evening. Which is great, unless you're a size 26ish (on a good day) who hasn't work heels since forever.

I've seen some of the fab threads for the fatter person this evening and wondered if anyone could come up with any suggestions (twinsetandpearls seems like a genius). Anything would be gratefully considered.

Thanks in advance...

this?? or too dull?

AngryPixie · 02/11/2009 22:05

if you've got fabulous norks

AngryPixie · 02/11/2009 22:08

not posh enough?

Ronaldinhio · 02/11/2009 22:14

ok
tall
small
rich
colours
love and hate please...

ScottishBoris · 03/11/2009 08:24

Thanks for the suggestions so far - I really like the fabulous norks suggestion one from Angrypixie, it's not too dull, anything will be an improvement on my usual trousers/top combination. I've been with DP for 13 years and don't think I've ever worn a dress in that whole time!

Questions:
Fairly tall - about 5'7
Not had my colours 'done' but have just past shoulder-length dark hair and fair skin (Scottish skin which burns v. easily .

Am leaning toawrds darker colours if I'm going for a dress, with maybe some fab/quirky shoes (for the five mins I'll be able to wear them without feeling like a cripple). I've seen some cool tartan ones on the web these but am willing to be dissuaded and some dramatic make-up round the eyes.

Not keen on my tree trunk legs so think a past the knee length would be better.

Dinner lady arms, so maybe sleeves or a shrug/cardi to hide those.

Boobs are pretty good, at least that's what I've been told.

Cost-wise, willing to look at £100-£150ish if needed. If I'm buying a dress after 12 years I think I can splurge a bit.

Thanks for your help.

The shoes are lovely but you would keep shoes on longer when heavy if you have a strappy mule or peep toe as then the foot can spread.

the platform also help spreads the weight

I too don't wear heels much but I managed to dance all night on a pair of stiletto heels cos they were very open toe and I wore those foot ball gel cushions.

I'll go and have a search for a frock

LaurieScaryCake · 03/11/2009 08:38

I know these may be more than you're willing to pay but some are very special like the kaftan one and just look at the dramatic eye make up on the home page

Very Octopussy or Casino Royale

LaurieScaryCake · 03/11/2009 08:44

this with a shrug for £45

Zondra · 03/11/2009 11:26

I absolutely LOVE the Red or Dead tartan shoes!

KristinaM · 03/11/2009 12:23

go wash your mouth out with soap, boris!

there are no fat ladies on mumsnet, they are CURVY

KristinaM · 03/11/2009 12:24

laurie - that simply B dress you linked to is LOVELY

ScottishBoris · 03/11/2009 13:02

Thanks for tip about the shoes, I will now be hunting for some peep toes (and filing down my troll hooves with a pumice ).

Kristina - at the moment I'm deff fat, but have lost 12.5lbs in the last four weeks so here's hoping I wont have this dilemma next year.

The Anna Scholtz dresses are lovely, but a bit out of my price range I think, especially as I'm hoping to lose some more weigh over the next year.

What do you think of these:

Not sure if this ones a bit too "old lady" what anout this

Should I be shot for going back to black?

too short?

too unforgiving

And I will also need help with shoes and accessories (god I am useless!!).

On the shoes front, can I beg you to buy ones that fit? You'll have such a great time if you're not in pain.

Evans have some beautiful shoes such as:
Bronze platform shoes

FlorenceandtheWashingMachine · 03/11/2009 13:31

Number three and number four are my favourites. I love the colour of both.

I think that number four would fit in best with the James Bond theme. You could wear it with a gorgeous wrap/shrug and these shoes:

Gold shoes

ScottishBoris · 03/11/2009 13:45

Aaargh, can't get the Evans website to display properly at work for some reason. Will have to wait until I get home to review.

So, if I went with the teal dress (number four) how about some black fishnets and mock-croc black peep-toes? Or are fishnets a bit tarty and wrong for peep-toes?

OP posts:
LaurieScaryCake · 03/11/2009 13:48

I personally like fishnets and peep toes but its probably some 'dreadfully declasse' thing to do on mumsnet

Don't get those very large hole fishnets as you'll put a foot through them in peeptoes.

FlorenceandtheWashingMachine · 03/11/2009 14:06

I too think that peep toe and fishnets are cool, but I always buy the nude ones as I think that they are more flattering and work better with non-black shoes.

ScottishBoris · 03/11/2009 21:11

I think I'm stuck on this dress

With these shoes

Splashing out on some decent shapewear pink or black

Should I go for black fishnets or these?

What do you think or am I being a deluded fool?!

OP posts:
ScottishBoris · 03/11/2009 21:11

ps meant to say thanks to you all for your input so far I'm very grateful!

ScottishBoris · 03/11/2009 22:08

Just realised the shoes link timed out as did the shapewear black or pink.

I have high hopes - whaddya reckon?

Shoes & dress are amazing.
Can't decide between the fishnets or purple tights? Both fab in their own way-I imagine though that hubby would prefer fishnets!
As for the shapewear,I do like the classic black, something v.40's/50's sex kitten about it.
Happy shopping!

stressed2007 · 04/11/2009 12:40

ok this may be boring...but Anne Harvey have some lovely stuff - they really do and not too expensive. Have a look at the website although often does not do the stuff justice.

That dress is lovely by the way.

AngryPixie · 05/11/2009 14:19

Yay Yay Yay, you like my dress the best. Looking forward to the photos of the event, you'll look fab!

ScottishBoris · 26/11/2009 21:26

Hi Pixie and everyone else who helped out!

Just to let you know dress looks fab, shapewear does the trick but I do feel like a sausage ! And, I did get the stockings - which has prompted dp to finally agree to ttc number 3

I wore it sooner than expected (at a funeral last week strangely enough - but with red shoes and black opaques), but still need help with shoes...the lovely iron fist ones were fab, but my little fat feet (and poor balance) didn't do them justice.

As I am apparantly hopeless with 'normal' high heels I was thinking about some TUK shoes. I've got a pair of mary-janes which are really comfy, despite my ridiclously high instep - I usually spend my life in flats and trainers.

so what would you recommend with said dress..I like these, but wonder if you guys can let me know what you think of any of the others (esp. the low heel ones)?
