Which clothes shops do you NEVER buy from?

I have never ever set foot in jane Norman for instance. A look in the window is enough.

I walk round River Island and straight out the door without stopping.

Mum buys stuff from Fat Face all the time, I think it is sludgy coloured and vile.

Warehouse looks cheap and cheerless.

I was sneered out of Karen Millen. Too glitzy anyway. Nouveaux Riche clothing

nobody admits to shopping in next! I'll admit to it. I always get nice things in there. Plain basics. Nothing that is obviously from somewhere.

peachygirl · 30/10/2009 18:32

I never go in
River Island
Zara
Mango

I rarely go in Primark and never buy from Next.

I do however go in M and S quite a lot.

Mainly this is to do with the fact that I'm a shortarse. Even the Next petite stuff is a bad fit for me

thumbscrewwitch · 30/10/2009 18:37

Next, Benetton and designer shops.

When I was at school, our 6th form went mufti and there were 2 girls who constantly wore brand new Benetton and Next clothes, new outfits almost every day. They flaunted them - it put me off dreadfully.

Just can't afford new designer clothes.

trixymalixy · 30/10/2009 19:44

River Island
Next
Jane Norman

Crazycatlady · 30/10/2009 19:52

There are many, many, many shops I never buy anything in - too many to list, but of the ones that friends seem to buy lots of stuff in (and congratulate each other on 'bargains', i.e. nasty tat that will fall apart after one wash), the ones I have never buy anything in are:

  • Primark
  • H&M
  • Zara
  • New Look
  • Topshop
  • Anything from a supermarket range

It's a quality issue for me, and while I don't have a big clothes budget AT ALL (I easily spend less per year than my friends)...I'd much rather spend slightly more on fewer pieces of clothing that are cut better, last longer and are fashionable but slightly less 'cheap catwalk-copy'.

At the moment, I'm really liking Ted Baker's collections, Whistles and Reiss. And All Saints has had some lovely stuff of late.

messalina · 30/10/2009 20:29

Evans.

saintmaybe · 30/10/2009 20:35

Lots I'd pretty much never buy in, but I'd have a look

Next is the big 'no way' for me, it's peculiarly sexless stuff, and I don't mean I want tarty clothes, but next has no charm

scottishmummy · 30/10/2009 20:36

wallis.formaldehyde central
laura ashley.horsey
burberry.hate the check

Ronaldinhio · 30/10/2009 20:59

ditto h&m unless I have a day off
poo look

never been in fat face or whitestuff

Katisha · 30/10/2009 21:02

I am struggling to find any shops I do buy clothes in.

mippy · 29/10/2010 17:23

I grew up somewhere where Next and Gap were 'designer'. A friend's sister once said 'Do you like my new designer shoes, they're from Faith...' So proper high street shops are still a novelty.

Dorothy Perkins - used to like it, but the quality's gone right down, and what's with all the 'brands'

Warehouse, Karen Millen, Jane Norman - just not my style

Primark - not designed for people who aren't ironing-board shaped

Whistles, Reiss, Hobbs, Jigsaw - not on my radar at all

New Look - thinks 'tall' starts at 5ft 6

Miss Selfridge, Oasis, FCUK - will not fit breasts. Years of magazines telling me French Connection were 'good for curves' made me want to go to one but they spoke crap.

Shops I have surprisingly found nice things in:

Next
Laura Ashley
Topshop (given their sizes are teeny tiny)

dexter73 · 29/10/2010 17:27

Blimey where did you find this thread! It's a year old!

Unprune · 29/10/2010 17:35

God, most places.
Basically I won't buy from places where the fabrics won't last, so that's most shops completely out. EG Wallis: some of the clothes look ok but the quality of the fabric is so low/so synthetic - get lost.
Also Toast: have bought things from there (I quite like the look) and the farking hems have fallen down. I've never bought full price but seriously, I cannot be doing with hemming quite expensive trousers.

Someone mentioned Phase8 and I would like to stick up for them a bit, because they size clothes for older women. I've always had broad shoulders and am a 12/14. Most (esp bargain like Primark) places don't change the placement of straps or change sleeve depths when they make bigger sizes so things end up fitting badly. Phase 8 seem to make things where sizes are altered proportionally (if that makes sense). Even if some of the styles are really frumpy, even if I'd never buy a dress for a wedding there in case the mother of the groom is wearing the same thing Grin, I can get basic tops and dresses that actually fit.

higgle · 29/10/2010 17:40

Next
Jane Norman - have never set foot in there - how does it continue to exist?
BHS
Vestry
Morgan

BelligerentGhoul · 29/10/2010 17:52

Next - because it's vile. Although I did buy 13 year old dd2 some boys' biker boots there today.

Jane Norman - gah

River Island - explosion in a plastic factory

Wallis - could start a bonfire inadvertently with all that polyester

Fat face - because I have no desire to look like an old fat teenager who has never been near a surf board in my life, thank you

Karen Millen - ugh

Per Una - just when you think it can't possibly get worse, they manage it again

Primark - because I like to think I still have a few morals remaining

Mango - weird

All Saints - expensive and stupidly cut

In fact, there don't seem to be many places left that I DO shop at

MaudOHara · 29/10/2010 17:55

Primark as I refuse to queue for hours

Top Shop as I feel to old

MarshaBrady · 29/10/2010 17:57

Pretty much everywhere.

I only buy from about four places.

Meggles76 · 29/10/2010 17:58

Tescos, Sainsburys, Asda (simply can't get excited about clothes that come from the place where I buy milk)

Primark (while others rave, I think freakin jumble sale)

TK Maxx (Ditto above)

New Look (I am short petite and the cut of their stuff is no good for me)

River Island (ugly stuff to my mind)

Jane Norman (Have never even set foot in the shop)

Karen Millen (too scary)

Hell, it's a wonder I am not naked Wink

I would agree with most on page one here (haven't read the others yet).
However I do buy from M & S, but am very selective, and Debenhams. I bought a lovely pair of skinny jeans from Debenhams last week and love them.

The last few items of clothing I bought were:

A pencil skirt from M & S
2 cardigans from New Look
A long "boyfriend" style shirt from Peacocks
A pair of skinny jeans from Debenhams
An M &S T-shirt from the local market (cost £3)
A long shirt from H & M

I bought a fab leather jacket last year from TK Maxx, but I have to be in the mood for rummaging when I go in there as I find it a bit jumble saley.

I have always found Next very disappointing for me but great for my daughter (age 10).

nancydrewrocked · 29/10/2010 18:21

getorf me me - I bought something from phase 8!

I'd never been in there but I saw a chunky cardi in Red Mag that I loved so went in to get it - really weird shop: half dreadful aplique mother of bride dresses but also some really nice bits.

TBH I shop everywhere - In terms of highstreet I mainly wear:

Ted Baker
Reiss
Top Shop
French Connection
Whistles
Joseph
H&M

But I have things from M&S, Mango, Jigsaw, Karen Millen, Next, River Island, Primark, Gap, Monsoon (particularly like their fusion range), Superdry.

I don't however own a single thing from Boden

Bunbaker · 29/10/2010 18:28

I can't afford Boden. In fact I don't know anyone who wears Boden. Is it a MN thing? I keep seeing Boden mentioned on here, but never on other forums.

AreYouAZombieNoImArfasleep · 29/10/2010 18:31

Jane tart Norman Grin says it all really
I like Next Blush but don't wear head-to- toe & nothing with logo, like their summer stuff mostly
Primark, always walk in & back out again!
Miss Selfridge/River Island/Top Shop, old fogey alarms always go off too, I think
Dorothy Perkins- used to like but all boring/same now

ladylush · 30/10/2010 09:45

New Look, Primark, Next, Jane Norman, Wallis, Mint Velvet...............for different reasons but usually due to poor fit or don't like the feel of the material. I'm tall so can't shop everywhere.

BelligerentGhoul · 30/10/2010 10:59

I liked Miss Selfridge years ago (ie in my v early twenties) but then I had dd1 and dp told me I was too old and fat for it. I used to like the fact that they were always a bit vintage/old lady in a dressing up box-ish.
