Which clothes shops do you NEVER buy from?

I have never ever set foot in jane Norman for instance. A look in the window is enough.

I walk round River Island and straight out the door without stopping.

Mum buys stuff from Fat Face all the time, I think it is sludgy coloured and vile.

Warehouse looks cheap and cheerless.

I was sneered out of Karen Millen. Too glitzy anyway. Nouveaux Riche clothing

too many to list, but of MN 'favs'
Boden
Kew
Great Plains
Monsoon
Primark
New Look
Top Shop
Oasis
Jigsaw
Next (why should I be free advertising?)
White stuff (rubbish quality)

I could go on....

GetOrfMoiLand · 30/10/2009 10:12

Oh Jack fucking Wills. This is my dd's favourite shop. It bloody would be, it all costs a fortune.

Pretentious, preppy, overpriced nonsense. Knickers cost £15. Jeans £90. CVrap old polo shorts £40. DD has aspirational ideas (ALL the kids who go to Cheltenham College wear Jack Wills and have Diana Vickers hair).

Joules. What the hell is all that about. You need to have 4 acres of land (at least) and own your own horse to buy clothes from there. Full of vile gilets.

Phase 8. Who buys clothes from there. It is all mother of the bride clothing for ladies of a certain size.

Monsoon. Everyting is vile.

I tend to buy clothes from Top Shop, French Connection, All Saints at a push, Primark, Tesco and Matalan (don't laugh). House of Fraser for work stuff.

Never go in Gap any more either.

DD says she wouldn't be seen dead in a Gap top as all her school friends believe it stands for Gay And Proud.

That's not my reasoning, I hasten to add.

Bleh · 30/10/2009 10:17

The Gay and Proud thing has been going around for years.

PuppyMonkey · 30/10/2009 10:24

Oh, sorry, has it? Ah well, never go there anyway!

notyummy · 30/10/2009 10:26

Next - think the stuff has grdually improved but the sizing is all wrong for me.

Jane Norman

East

Joules

Boden

Mainly the 'middle class, middle of the road' clothes floggers....which is odd, because on a reasonable income at 37, I am probably who they are marketing their stuff at.

But it is DULLLLLLLLL.

AngryFromManchester · 30/10/2009 10:30

there are lots of shops I never buy from but would like to

Bleh · 30/10/2009 10:38

The Jack Wills stuff reminds me of this post on the blog "Stuff white People Like"
Pea Coats

franke · 30/10/2009 10:41

Gucci
Chanel
Prada
Armani
YSL
Primark

Everywhere else is fair game. Or would be if I lived in the UK

Divatheshopaholic · 30/10/2009 10:45

primark
newlook
m&s
wallis
karen millen

Marioandluigi · 30/10/2009 10:48

I would never buy from Kookai, Warehouse, Pilot, Bay Trading, Jane Norman - just because the stuff is all yuck. Primark makes me teeth itch when I go in and stuff I have been bought from there

I do buy my Jeans from Oasis or Dotty P's, but my heart belongs to H&M - I buy everything else from there but i can never find jeans in my size

SofaQueen · 30/10/2009 10:48

Alibooobaa: I'm 5'2" and a size 4 so find it difficult to buy from many high street shops.

Amandoh · 30/10/2009 10:56

Went off Karen Millen a couple of years ago. Why do they insist on covering EVERYTHING in little buttons or poppers that say "Karen Millen"?

AlaskaNebraska ~ I saw that YLB photo in Grazia and just thought "Why?" She didn't stop at the trousers either. She had the jacket too!

I wonder if it's part of the Wallis deal that she wears the clothes? I can't think of any other reason why she'd leave her house in them. Each of her thighs looked like the arm of a velour sofa and she's hardly a tubster. It shows courage in her convictions. I'll give her that.

DuelingFanjo · 30/10/2009 10:57

Next - I just hate the clothes
Monsoon - way too expensive for me

hmmm, interesting thread.....ive worked in high street and non-high street "fashion" retail for years now work for the jumble-sale alike Primarni. Often asked how I can work in a place like that, generally it's organised chaos and we are basically tidying up after customers from about 11 am or so! Most of my clothes come from the stores I work in and find most of the clothes on the high street abominable. I love Gok Wan and what he's trying to do, but find myself being slightly envious of the whole thing and thinking how come I cant end up doing things that suit me?? Surely I should be better dressed if I work in fashion?? In reality, I hate clothes shopping and am much better as a personal stylist to others...so in answer to the OP...places I never buy from??? all of them!!!

Abubu · 30/10/2009 12:57

I never buy from:

Zara - although definitely the place to go if you are trying to build up the willpower to diet!

River Island and Topshop - way too fashionable for me - similar to feeling like the only over 30 woman in a nightclub of 17 year olds

Morgan - hideous hideous - surely only Katie Price shops here?

OrmIrian · 30/10/2009 13:03

Bloody hell! Most of them.

I don't much like shops. Especially clothes shops as i suffer from OGILLH syndrome (Oh God I Look like a heifer) in most shop changing room mirrors.

So I tend to buy online or only venture into the shops that are full of old ladies who are nice to me and make me feel young and slim or Asda where I can pretend I'm not really buying clothes.

LordVetinarisApprentice · 30/10/2009 13:06

MY GAWD The new Joules catalogue has put me off buying anything from there. Are they totally insane? Gorgeous models drinking tea from china cups dressed like 80 yr olds? Modern country it ain't luv. Tragic. Needless to say won't be buying from :

Joules
Karen Millen
Top Shop (for fashion victims)
River Island - just too scary
House of Fraser (don't know why, love John Lewis)
Zara - too skinny and too bloody hard to find anything the way they lay stuff out

Feelingoptimistic · 30/10/2009 14:34

It's so interesting isn't it, how we all have our own preferences, based on so many different considerations.

I agree that it's much easier to make a list of the places that I DO shop at, than where I don't...

I never shop at:
M&S, Next, Primark, New Look, DP, Primark, Karen Millen, Topshop

I DO shop at:

  • Zara (some things are actually good quality, and their fit is great for me - I am slim and no boobs)
  • Mango
  • Whistles (although some of their things are too big on me)
  • Comptoir des Cotonniers (love their things)
  • Uniqlo (current favourite for t-shirts, etc)
  • Joseph (once or twice a year, when on sale!)
TspookyChasm · 30/10/2009 14:49

I don't like Fat Face at all. Rumpled like a bag of old washing brought home after camping.

Etam (seems to have been around since the 1970's) - for precocious tweenies.

Monsoon - like it in the shop but not enough to buy it.

Boden - gawd help us.

Next - what is it about Next? I can't put my finger on it. There's a 1980's veneer to it.

Mamazonabroomstick · 30/10/2009 14:50

top shop. - i is wayyyyy too fat for anything they sell. even the accessories don't fit me

deliciousdevilwoman · 30/10/2009 16:13

Next
BHS
Per Una
Miss Selfridge
Jane Norman
Matalan

MaggieOicheSamhain · 30/10/2009 18:13

Gap - too boring
Jane Norman (too slutty)
River Island (too young)
Mango and Zara, I have the wrong body I think!
Primark - just don't want any more rags in my wardrobe

Ema09 · 30/10/2009 18:25

I won't shop at Primark for ethical reasons - I don't want to weat clothes made by a 8yr old that is missing out on being a Child! and on an education! This is after realising someone pays the price for such cheap clothes as well as watching the documentary on the manufacturing of Primark clothes in India. I know if you look more into most other high-street as well as designer brands they're not all ethical! but Primark IMO is the worst. Otherwise will shop anywhere where I like the clothes (I have seen some some lovely items featured in magazines from Primark, particulary loved the look of the leather bomber jackets with 3/4 sleeves they had last A/W that I saw on people but my principles stop me from buying from there).
