mondaymonday - there is no one paler than me sorry - I really didn't mean to offend you.

mondaymonday · 07/10/2009 11:04

well I look pale, and I can tell you, it isn't very nice when people make comments such as this. This has actually happened to me in RL. I was once in a life and someone, a stranger, out of the blue said "you are so pale" and everyone else in the lift laughed.

On a separate occasion, someone at work (again a stranger to me) said out loud, in front of everyone "you are so pale you look ill"

It really is not funny - and imo, no more acceptable that making fun of someone for having, for example, black skin

MintyCane · 07/10/2009 11:07

I am also very pale with strawberry blonde hair and people comment on it often - I am sorry and didn't mean to offend you. I am going to go and get on with some work now. I was not making fun of her skin color.

morningpaper · 07/10/2009 11:07

monday I think you are being a leetle over-sensitive

This woman has been chosen to represent a company because of how she looks

I think a little feedback is probably ok

pofacedandproud · 07/10/2009 11:08

It is not just the pale skin of the model, it is the cat's bum's face. Sorry people were rude to you mondaymonday. I hate it when people say to me 'oh you look well' as I interpret is as 'You look fat.

mondaymonday · 07/10/2009 11:09

minty - no worries

morningpaper - the point is though, would it be ok to make this sort of statement about a black person who, for her looks, chose to model?

morningpaper · 07/10/2009 11:10

Yes it is more her psychotic stare that is ermmm unusual

ScarletBandit · 07/10/2009 11:10

Monday, I wasn't having a go at the colour of her skin, she really doesn't look well to me. It was just banter on a thread that was started to raise a laugh on here.
I was laughing, but now I am not. I would never make fun of anyone's skin colour, that was not the way my comment was written and if you read it that way then I am sorry.

morningpaper · 07/10/2009 11:11

monday there are 20 pages of pale models with none of them smiling (except the crazy lady who is gleefully dirtying the gay man's cashmere)

If they were black and staring psychotically it would still be notable

geraldinetheluckygoat · 07/10/2009 11:13

I am casper pale too, when people point it out, i say "THANKS!!" as if they are complementing me, I really like being pale, actually, I dont even fake tan my legs on the rare occasions I get them out in the sun. And usually I have about factor fifty on, which makes me even paler, its just how I am, dont care if other people dont like it

MamaG · 07/10/2009 11:13

I really like Joules girls clothing

LadyoftheBathtub · 07/10/2009 11:14

But most people can "look pale" - unless they have extremely dark skin - I didn't actually see this as a comment on racial skin colour, but on the fact that she looks ill (which is often said about models).

On top of that I don't think it is particularly insulting to mention skin colour. It isn't rude to say that someone's pale if they are, or black if they are - it's just a description. Laughing at you in a lift is not on but what we are laughing at on here is the deliberate promotion of an unwell/angry/depressed appearance in a clothes catalogue - not at people who are pale, unwell or depressed!

I am also very pale and don't give two hoots if people comment on it. It's true, and I actually like it anyway so what's the problem?

morningpaper · 07/10/2009 11:14

yah me too

I am pale with dark rings under my eyes and am occasionally asked who I boxed last night...

Usually I wink and say "I think it was your husband love"

geraldinetheluckygoat · 07/10/2009 11:14

I may adopt psychotic stares and weird contortions, people will think I am rich enough to afford Toast then....

FlightAttendant · 07/10/2009 11:14

That picture is HYSTERICAL

surely you can see it is just pure irony?

Thread · 07/10/2009 11:15

mondaymonday, when there is systematic prejudice against the wan, then comments about paleness will be comparable to comments about black skin? Until then they are just like any other comments about looks -- curly hair, black hair, snub nose? Which models lay themselves open to for payment.

DungeonButter · 07/10/2009 11:15

Aw FFS! The toast pictures are so depressing.

Arty and beautifully taken pics but for FFS!

Wan pride!

pofacedandproud · 07/10/2009 11:18

who am I again?

MintyCane · 07/10/2009 11:18

jeeez can't get on with any work now and look exactly like those models but without the nice clothes - and to think i was actually having a laugh for the first time in days.

Thread · 07/10/2009 11:18

All for wan
And wan for all!

mondaymonday · 07/10/2009 11:19

aah thread, so someting's only unacceptable when lots of people do it

MaMight · 07/10/2009 11:19

That picture is creepy as fuck. It's like a scene from a horror movie.

Love love LOVE Joules girls' clothing though.

gorionine · 07/10/2009 11:20

I have not laughed so much in a long time!

Doesn't say much about me as it looks all the models for TOAST could do with a prozac and a bowl of soup!

LadyoftheBathtub · 07/10/2009 11:20

Just roared at that one pofaced! It's like they are doing it deliberately!
