How much do you spend on your moisturiser and is it worth it?

I almost treated myself to a new posh moisturiser by Lancome today, it smelled lovely and the salesgirl was convincing me until she said it was £47!!!!!

I currently use an Olay moisturiser but after having 2 dc's and nearing 34 I thought I should maybe venture into using a 'better' moisturiser. But does more money = better results or is it a rip off do you think?

I got a sample of the Lancome stuff so I'll give it a shot but I'm still not convinced (although the free gift from Boots is swaying me a bit!).

hmm...am using one from Lush at the moment that cost about £8-9 but am not hugely impressed...owuld consider the more expensive one if i was sure it was going to be worth it.

most i have spent is around £20 on a forever living aloe vera one which was actually good and lasted for ages...but i like to chop and change...

I am totally hooked on Clarins, I'm 41 and use the Extra Firming Day Cream, it smells divine and the texture is lovely. It's about £42. All their products smell divine although I did once have a free sample of some bath oil which smelt like a stock cube. People tell me my skin looks good but I think I am kidding myself that it's to do with clarins. I think there's a psychological feelgood factor about something expensive, but I really can't keep justifying it

I'm using the Energising Morning Cream at the moment, very nice.

I use the Extra Firming Botanical Lift Serum underneath which I have raved about before.

expatinscotland · 07/09/2009 13:41

I use the No. 7 serum stuff. I don't need a moisturiser as have oily skin.

lilacclaire · 07/09/2009 14:35

I use whatever one is on special offer with an spf of at least 30, have done for a few years now.
Got told I looked about 26 last week (am nearly 34).

I buy as cheap as possible as I don't believe ther expensive ones are worth it. Perfectly happy with Nivea visage but I think even that is expensive!

lynniep · 07/09/2009 14:39

I use SKII products which I get off ebay (you can get it in harrods but that really is too much) I started using it when I lived in Oz. I justify it because it lasts me ages, and seems to work. But I dont know - maybe something else would work just as well. My wrinkles are certainly being kept at bay...

GrimmaTheNome · 07/09/2009 14:41

I'm 48, hardly ever use moisturizer but I'm not as wrinkly as a lot of younger women. Finally getting some benefit from my overactive sebaceous glands !

Katisha · 07/09/2009 14:45

Same as Grimma.
Plus I find face cream gives me spots.

expatinscotland · 07/09/2009 14:53

Same here, Katisha.

I'm 38 and between having oily skin and living in a rainy climate up here, I don't have any wrinkles at all.

I'm using this stuff at the moment and it's really nice. Smells gorgeous and doesn't irritate my skin.

In the past I have used Shiseido and another similarly priced one and they were both really nice but I didn't feel the price was justified.

bran · 08/09/2009 19:26

Claireybee, what are their shower gels like? I'm looking for a nice smelling one that doesn't have SLSs and doesn't cost a fortune.

claireybee · 09/09/2009 10:10

Bran I don't have the shower gel yet...I picked some up in Sainsburys then thought I couldn't really justify when normal ones were 99p. All their face stuff is really nice though and the sample of shampoo I got was nice too.

A LOT depends on your genes and lifestyle, I'm afraid.
However, as far as the über-expensive versus cheap moisturisers are concerned, most of what you pay for, is marketing - as everybody knows anyway.
Did an experiment on my very self, used LaMer (£150 a jar) on one side of my face and £2.15 moisturiser on the other for 6 months and didn't notice an iota of difference. I wasn't paid to do it, just curious.
Luckily all my family is blessed with great skin, I have never worn foundation as have no need for it.
IMO, the most important bit about the skincare regime is regular and proper exfoliation. Get rid of those dead cells and any moisturiser will keep your skin hydrated.
