How much do you spend on your moisturiser and is it worth it?

I almost treated myself to a new posh moisturiser by Lancome today, it smelled lovely and the salesgirl was convincing me until she said it was £47!!!!!

I currently use an Olay moisturiser but after having 2 dc's and nearing 34 I thought I should maybe venture into using a 'better' moisturiser. But does more money = better results or is it a rip off do you think?

I got a sample of the Lancome stuff so I'll give it a shot but I'm still not convinced (although the free gift from Boots is swaying me a bit!).

I have sensitive skin and I'm allergic to perfume so my options have been limited.

I find my skin changes over time and I need to change my moisturiser regularly. I find nearly everything gives me spots after a bit.

I used E45 lotion for a while. The two I've had long term success with are neal's yard frankincense and clinique yellow.

Tbh I just got sick of trying different things!

Which magazine just did a test on moisturisers and their panel liked 'Simple replenishing moisturiser' the best. They did compare it to other more expensive creams but this came out top -www.marieclaire.co.uk/news/beauty/391757/3-cream-tops-the-anti-ageing-charts.html. It was a bargain at about £3.00 and I have to say my skin feels lovely!

nevergoogledragonbutter · 04/09/2009 22:54

that's the one i use. didn't know about the which thing though. it's just good. but i don't have very dry skin.

FluffySaysTheDailyMailsShite · 04/09/2009 22:56

Chanel Precision, it's £38 and so smooth, it just melts into my skin and makes it really soft.

bibbitybobbityhat · 04/09/2009 23:02

Neutrogena Active Day Cream with spf 15, about £7 or £8 in Superdrug. I have very sensitive skin (can't do Origins for eg.) and get along just fine with this.

I love Vichy Equalia but never seem to see it in the shops any more. Perhaps Vichy doesn't exist any more?

FabBakerGirlIsBack · 05/09/2009 13:21

Vichy aqualia here

creme de la mare one was rubbish and I would not use again

BerylCole · 05/09/2009 20:00

Oil cleansing method - I use almond oil or an olive/castor oil blend with a few drops of essential oil in. at night, and Clinique SuperDefense in the daytime (just because it is SPF25 - if anyone knows of a cheaper day cream with 25 or higher SPF I'll switch!).

bibbitybobbityhat · 05/09/2009 20:00

Fab - thank you!

MrsSeanBean · 05/09/2009 20:07

Anything from Clarins, IME, works and is worth every penny!

thelennox · 05/09/2009 20:11

Hear hear Mrs SeanBean - I love it all. Especially if you grab it during bonus time, you feel like you have saved yourself money by buying it!

masonicpixiesreadthedailymail · 05/09/2009 20:16

I bought some elizabeth arden cream yesterday for 40 odd quid. First time I've ever I've gone above a tenner. But haven't really had a spf moisturiser for months now and am generally slack with skincare stuff so kind of bribing myself into making some effort. Now I'm getting older and less blase about looking so young / having good skin..

brimfull · 05/09/2009 20:26

I love love love olay's regenerist 3 point cream but even that is too £££ for me atm and I am using Aldi cream instead which is ok but not as good imo.

Which Clarins one do people recommend ?

mrswill · 05/09/2009 20:49

I use magic cream by advent which is a baby moisturiser, but works for my skin. i also use body butter by sanctuary for my body, and have no stretchmarks etc, and my belly was massive when pregnant!!

morocco · 05/09/2009 21:14

(ahem my pet hate - the cream won't have stopped you getting stretch marks - no cream will altho being well moisturised is good in itself)

bran · 05/09/2009 21:28

I use Waitrose Baby Bottom Butter after it was recommended on here (£2.something I think), but I hardly ever need to use moisturiser as my cleanser leaves my skin very hydrated. I use sunblock on sunny days. TBH money isn't much of a consideration in my choice of skin care and I have tried lots of different things but the more expensive they were the more likely they were to irritate my skin, probably because there were so many ingredients.

mrswill · 05/09/2009 21:30

i just tell myself that morocco, it makes me feel better for buying it by the truckload - apologies for the pet hate

norktasticninja · 05/09/2009 21:31

I'm not a fan of the Body Shop at all but their hemp face cream is the only thing I've found that's moisturising enough for me. I've used it for 4 or 5 years and my skin is holding up very well.

cocolepew · 05/09/2009 21:34

here is the Which? survey.

norktasticninja · 05/09/2009 21:35

Actually I had a couple of samples of someting from sisley that was lush and did a great job but it wasn't so much better that I thought it was worth the price difference in the end.

morocco · 05/09/2009 22:16

it's only when companies claim it does stop stretchmarks that I get really annoyed bad companies

ilikeyoursleeves · 05/09/2009 22:21

thanks all for the replies, i bought the simple one today while doing the tesco shop so saved myself £44!

hopefully it will work ok...cheers!

I used to use Guinot which was about £33 for a v small bottle. Also had loads of regular facials etc and skin was ok, but no better than it is now, when i use a cheap simple facewash and moisturiser.

BTW, my beautician friend once told me that they used clinique toner etc in their salon to actually clean down the surfaces because it was so good at getting them really clean and removing all the rubbish like drips of wax and nail varnish etc....so don't think I would be tempted to use it on my face!

purplepeony · 06/09/2009 15:10

Recent survey in D Mail said that research showed that Simple and Olay came out tops for wrinkle reduction.
I use Clinique adn REN as I have sensitive skin- each costs around £30p £40.
