My ds starts school next wk and it seems to be that all the parents I have seen in the last few years look immaculate, fashionable and trendy, almost like they have stepped from the boden catalouge. Will my jeans and jumper surfice?

Wow, that's quite patronising. "engaged in a war of words". This thread is tame! Just different views.... mostly the same views actually....

And nobody admitting to doing a kiss and drop in a nighty

TheScatterGunApproach · 02/09/2009 20:44

ACK!!

Well spotted Anna!

A war of words indeed.

I CANNOT BELIEVE PEOPLE EARN A LIVING FROM THIS CRAP

How much does she get paid for that bone-numbingly tedious stream of consciousness

Starbear · 02/09/2009 22:16

& we make it easy for them to earn that living by doing their writing for them!

HelenaBonhamCarter · 03/09/2009 07:39

Oh holy crap/ MN has to get this sorted.

GentleOtter · 03/09/2009 07:43

Mail mention too

HelenaBonhamCarter · 03/09/2009 07:48

That is so shite. Both of them are just trotting out a mass of stereotypes. 'The slummy brigade' FFS and when did the term Yummy Mummy actually come back from the dead?

cashmeresox · 03/09/2009 16:59

I am having this dilemma too...I'd love to look 'trendy' or 'composed' but I'm more likely to look a bit grubby and 'arty'. Thats cos I work at an art college and 'our' uniform is strictly wacky. (lecturers that is) I'm worried about turning up to school in art college kit and worried about turning up to work in 'taking dd to school' kit. The only answer is my usual - I wear a combination of what I think will fit in (to spare my feelings) and what I love to wear at that moment. Thankfully I won't have long to spare at the school gates and when I return I may have morphed into horsey mum, having included a visit to my 'osses on the way. I plan to make friends with the nice people who aren't worried how I look - if they can get past it they are probably worth knowing! Good luck to all in their quest to look the part...

My daughter had her first day at school today and I didnt notice what the other parents where wearing at all because I was so nervous/focused on my little girl and the other children. I was also concerned that my disabled 2 year old son would cause complete caos. I think for most people each day is about getting on with their own lives and dressing for what is right/appropriate for their day ahead what ever it may be. The school run is only a very very small part of it!! To be honest I find this whole thread completely horrifying. Being a mummy is a hard enough job anyway and I feel judged as a parent a lot of the time and if, as this thread suggests, I am now going to be judged about what I wear and my appearance I think it is awful. If you make sweeping judgements about peoples appearance on the school run at least be polite and civilised enough to keep it to yourselves because most of us have got more important things to worry about. And if you are torturing yourself with concerns about what to wear and how you will be judged on the school run it is probably because you are incredibly judgemental yourself. Not a pleasant thought really!!!

hnl · 03/09/2009 20:54

What a totally bizzare thread! Do people seriously think about their "look" for the school run or worry whether their work "look" will be okay for the school run? If so, all I can say is: Get a life!
I'm built like a brick outhouse and my "look" is whatever fits and doesn't have food or toddler snot down the front.

Starbear · 03/09/2009 21:36

I've thought this thread was fairly light hearted. I enjoyed reading other peoples opinions. I do think that you want to make a good first impression. I'm not an office worker and have to wear a uniform to work. I look at well groomed and well dressed people purely aesthetically. I like fashion but can't wear it as I have no money and don't really need it during the week. But it is nice. I've got to say the parents at nursery, that we have made friends with, have obviously looked past my scruffy, just for the journey clothes, and have still made friends. Some are very glamorous and the person I'm thinking of is shy. She always has a beaming smile for me & my family. I think it's because we try and dress with a smile

sparkletoes · 04/09/2009 13:24

Yeech that Boden stuff looks bloody awful! (imo)

However can't say I give 2 hoots what others are wearing on the school run am usually running too late to notice

OrmIrian · 04/09/2009 13:27

What about that bloke who said that all scruffy women were headed for divorce as their husbands would be spending all day in the office with skinny smartly dressed totty? He must be a Mner taking the piss. Please say it wasn't genuine!

CarrieDababi · 04/09/2009 13:56

must admit i've heard more sneering from the jeans and teeshirt mums, about how certain mums must spend ages getting ready and must be insecure, and god what time does she get up in the morning.

seems like you won't win either way, as if you look quite smart some may sneer

if your casual and wear jeans etc some may sneer

so really just wear wht makes you feel good aand sod em.

personally i swing from one thing to another, today ive got nice dress on tights and boots, ive got a chunky beads and earings and ive done my hair and make up.
and i feel good.

but other days i don't do anything scrape my hair up without even brushing it, and wear sruffy clothes.

but i do not judge anyone for what they wear.
i judge them on how they treat people and behave

8oreighty · 04/09/2009 16:47

I really think this is something as a strong woman one needs to fight caring about! I refuse to get drawn in...I know how to dress myself by now...
