Hi all, have a huge wedding coming up and have bought this dress to wear www.asos.com/Lipsy/Lipsy-Knitted-One-Shoulder-Body-Con-Dress/Prod/pgeproduct.aspx?iid=650165&cid=150 3&sh=0&pge=0&pgesize=-1&sort=-1&clr=Aqua and these www.vivaladiva.com/shop/product/details/show.action?pdLpUid=DM105&pdBoUid=8331&lpgUid=11188744#colou r:3694,size: shoes.
But I fear I am going to look too tarty - does anyone have any suggestions of how I can tone it down or just looked more groomed for once! I need accessories too, like a shawl and bag that go too?
I love the shoes but do you think they ar too much??
Thank you stylish ladies in advance!

Are you Cheryl Cole?

Sorry but I dislike both the shoes and the dress.

How old are you and what size?

missmelly · 26/08/2009 10:31

how bout a knee length coat

CMOTdibbler · 26/08/2009 10:31

I honestly think that that dress is not suitable for a wedding. Sorry.

Bleh · 26/08/2009 10:33

I think it is very difficult to tone down that sort of dress. VERY difficult.

Definitely no long talon french manicure nails: rather just clear polish. No fancy hair/

missmelly · 26/08/2009 10:33

also how tall are you? that dress is very short - that model on Asos is shorter than the rest of them (I avoid anything modelled by her as it will be way to short for me)

sorry, but I dont think anything short, tight and one shouldered/strapless etc is that appropriate for a wedding

h0ney · 26/08/2009 10:34

Oh christ I knew it! hence why I asked. No absolutely not Cheryl unfortunately. Am 5 ft 4, blond hair above shoulders, 30 and size 8, not big on fake tan and short nails! Also have no tattoos, phew. What the hell am I going to do!

It is just above the knee, not short short at all on me

I would get a new dress, sorry.
That dress is fine for a night out (with your figure anyway, not mine!) but not for a wedding.
Sorry!

traceybath · 26/08/2009 10:37

Well I think it could work provided:

  • lots of other guests will be suitably glam
  • its not a church wedding
  • its a hot day

But I'd personally worry that I'd feel a bit uncomfortable.

Could you keep it for nights out and buy something else?

brokenspacebar · 26/08/2009 10:37

The dress does look very short on the model, I agree about a knee length coat - sorry, I know looking for clothes to wear to a wedding is hard but I just think the dress is wrong for a wedding, nice colour though.

notamumyetbutoneday · 26/08/2009 10:37

Im 26 and I wouldnt wear that dress to a wedding- sorry. Even with a size 8 figure!

Do you have any summery dresses in your wardrobe which might be more suitable?

notyummy · 26/08/2009 10:41

Either a different dress or a coat/hip length jacket as a cover up until at least the end of the meal.

I am sure you will look fab in the dress with your figure, but at a wedding people would look at you for the wrong reasons if you wore that.

Fimbo · 26/08/2009 10:41

This looks more refined.

notamumyetbutoneday · 26/08/2009 10:42

That is gorgeous fimbo- and cheaper than the OPs dress as well.

perdu · 26/08/2009 10:44

Oh you'll be OK!

can you wear a nice jacket? thinking smart navy blue?

Keep your heels moderate and understated too and just wear a nice chunky necklace and bracelet rather than your 'GOLD'.

You will cause a stir but so what - all the other relatives will prob look like they bought a suit at BHS??

Like the suggestion of knee length linen coat too OR just return it and start again.
How about white linen trousers (flared to show off your tiny waist - not jealous) and a smart top/jacket with some bling.

perdu · 26/08/2009 10:46

like the yellow dress on the ASOS page that you linked to?

Fimbo · 26/08/2009 10:48

this type of style of shoe (note these are not my favourites).

EleanoraBuntingCupcake · 26/08/2009 10:48

smart navy blue jacket! she will look like she pulled the night before and had to borrow her conquests jacket to get home.

LaurieFairyCake · 26/08/2009 10:48

if you could find a knee length coat and corsage in a contrasting colour - perhaps teal or fuchsia then it could look really good. Then you could take the coat off for the evening and show off your fabulous figure.

I would go for more discreet shoes though - the combination of short, body-con dress and strappy platforms screams hooker to me.

Fimbo · 26/08/2009 10:49

ROFL @ Eleanora!

GossipMonger · 26/08/2009 10:52

Couldnt you wear that dress for the night do and have something more appropriate for the church bit?

The dress is waaaaaaaaaaaaay to much for a wedding and can you really walk in those shoes?

Not that we all need to wear Boden or M&S but what were you thinking?

MrsBadger · 26/08/2009 10:52

yes you are going to look too tarty, sorry.

I am 30 and a size 10 and would not touch that dress with a bargepole even for a night out, let alone a wedding. Nothing you can do will tone it down.

return it and get the dress Fimbo suggested

perdu · 26/08/2009 10:52

yeah wear a blokes jacket.....or maybe even a ladies fitted one. doh!

BunnyLebowski · 26/08/2009 10:56

Sorry op but that dress is cheap and tarty looking, size 8 or size 18. Ditto the stripper shoes. Suitable for a hot-tub party at Hefner Mansions but that's about it.

If I was the bride I'd be mortified seeing a guest in that.

Really like Fimbo's dress but think it will be too plain for your taste. Don't like Fimbo's shoes - think you can do better than your originals without going for mother of the bride shoes.

Will take a look!
