ok, this leggings thing

Although I am really too old for 'em I am intrigued

I am tall, slim, fairly flat tummy, with long legs, admittedly saggy knees but they will be covered of course. I have some long tops and boyfriend cardis to cover the bum area

I could consider wearing them if they were quite heavy duty, dark coloured, non-see-through material, came right down to my ankles and didn't go baggy

Has anybody of 40+ bought any and looked ok, and where might I find some like I have described ?

alternatively, tell me I am being silly

I think the key to leggings is to excentuate your best bit. I am short with muscly legs but have a small top half and waist so I wear them with a top or dress that shoes this off. I think I get away with it. I have a friend who has fantastic legs but she is tubby round her waist but all you see is her legs cause she wars floaty tops so it works both ways

I've been wearing leggings this year after swearing I wouldn't (can't really remember why), they are really the only thing that's comfy with a large baby bump. Florence and Fred at tesco do some really soft ones in dark colours that are only £5 - perfect for just trying them out! I've been wearing dresses over them.

JRocks - are the F&F ones high waisted? The ones I have (Top Shop & Zara) sit on the hips and can cause a bit of muffin top (well, actually quite a lot of muffin top at times ). There are a pair from Top Shop which are high waisted but am always on look out for a bargain and the F&F ones are cheaper

My mum is mid 50s and seems to be managing leggings

Report
JRocks · 26/08/2009 09:27

They aren't armpit stylee but not hipsters either, I know this because I need to roll them over underneath my enormous stomach (nice)

Thus I need dress to cover the area!

One pair had a hole in the seam which I only noticed when I had them on, on the way to Tesco. Being the bolshy pregnant sort I went to customer services and asked for an exchange without receipt. I think the woman thought I was barking but did it anyway haven't had any other problems with them. If you have clubcard vouchers you can get them on that double up thingy (makes my brain hurt trying to work it out)

Leggings must always be accompanied by arse covering top.

I don't care if you are a size 6 with pert arse, they still need to cover it imo.

what if your legs aren't fantastic and might be a bit wobbly. Woudl a sturdy pair of long leggings work?

I would never have given leggings a second thought but then saw this. Not normally a Next shopper but did like that.

Its all down to the elastane content isn't it? The more the better for holding you in.

I bought my running leggings on that basis and they do manage to stop the wobble admirably.

How do people stand on jeggings?

Saw a friend of mine sporting them last week, and frankly didn't think they did much for her. She is tall, size 14 with big bottom (AKA 'hourglass curves' obviously)

just make sure your leggings are thick enough that you cant see skin/underwear through them. I've seen some truely awful examples of this lately, and your top MUST cover your arse

Bleh - I'm guessing you're a aScott Schuman fan like me?

Anyway my (no doubt unpopular) tuppence worth on leggings.

The're vile. And done to death. Model types can get away with them but these are the same women who could get away with wearing a dress made out of roadkill.

On anyone else they look extremely unattractive and unflattering.

Particularly when worn with gladiator sandals (which I just don't get anyway). Walking round town I'm completely baffled seeing scores of presumably otherwise intelligent, sensible women dressed like demented extras from The Life of Brian in their leggings and gladiators (or glads dahling).

And why would you want to look exactly like everyone else? I don't get it.

Agree with Bunny I am afraid - the only time I've ever seen someone in leggings and thought, wow, that looks good, the person in question was about 14 and very very skinny. I wouldn't go there, but then I don't understand fashion anyway.
