Is your name on this thread?

Time for a trim then.

I did it slightly differently this time as I didn't want the fringe any shorter, I put in 2 highish bunches at the back of my head and trimmed them.

So come on, sign back in!

Hmm, I think...

  1. DON'T do two ponytails - that cannot look good surely?
  2. understand exactly what is going to happen when you cut each bit - don't just snip and hope for the best.
  3. cut INTO the ponytail as much as possible - this will give the cute layers as opposed to hair of different lengths iykwim
  4. don't cut too short - you can always go shorter...
MamaVoo · 04/08/2009 09:51

I'm going to get dh to read this thread and watch the links and then do my hair for me. After the haircut I gave ds the other day I don't trust myself.

MamaVoo · 04/08/2009 09:57

My parting is to one side. Do I put the ponytail slightly over to the side that my parting is on, or is it still best to stick to the middle for a first timer?

FrameyMcFrame · 04/08/2009 12:35

right am gooing to try this this afternoon. will update later

JackBauer · 04/08/2009 18:15

Mrs MH, I don't think so, although I would love to see after photos if you tried it .....

Umlella, I did 2 ponytails, but not at the same time, you do the forehead one first, on your parting if it is a side one or in the middle if you have a centre parting/are a DIY virgin (Mamavoo, that's you) and then after I had takent that out I did another on my crown to catch the hair that was too short to go in the first pony.

Let us know how you did Framey...

Ha! You think after massacring (sp?) my mane I'd show my face in public, let alone post the photos on t'interweb? JB, you are a right cheeky mare!

oregonianabroad · 04/08/2009 20:54

OK, I've just done it. Results variable.

On the one hand, it is cheap and my hair was approaching lion-mane status due to lack of time, and (mostly) lack of money to blow on £60 hair cut.

BUT, a £60 hair cut is much, much nicer.

Ah well.

MamaG · 04/08/2009 23:20

What are you trying to DO woman?

ZippysMum · 05/08/2009 13:15

I have a bob (longer at the front then goes up towards the back, IYSWIM). Been 3 months since I had it cut. Just done the MN, but didn't 'feather' the ends. Did 2 ponytails, one on top and one further back. Looks good (so DH says...). Much tidier anyway, and no more split ends. I think once straightened it will look like it does from the hairdresser (always looks amazing till I wash it, then I can never get it to look the same!) So £32 saved - thanks MN!

JackBauer · 05/08/2009 18:21

Um...Hi MamaG!

Nice one Zippysmum! Another convert.

Yes, ok, it's not a perfect as a hairdresser professional haircut, but then it's was free, I didn't have to find someone to watch DD's and I didn' have to make small talk with a complete stranger. All pluses in my book!

Mamazon · 06/08/2009 17:37

I did mine this afternoon.

I've gone from very long straight hair to looking a bit like Suzy Quatro.

I have a fringe for the first time n about a decade.

I was a bit drastic though, i put it in a pony tail and cut about a foot off.

BUT i don't hate it. Its taking some gettng used to with teh fringe but its not awful. and i've already had loads of people telling me they "love my new hair" "ooh i like that it really suits you"

mind you the very last thing Dp said when he went out was "please don't cut your hair"

Sod him!

I shall post some pics as soon as i find my camera wire. (got lost in the move and i cannot find it anywhere)

JackBauer · 06/08/2009 20:58

oics on profile of before and after

EyeballsintheSky · 18/08/2009 12:12

Right, have trimmed and am very pleased with it. Look a lot less like a medieval monk now but SIL did have to trim the back to prevent a repeat disaster.

It doesn't seem as flicky out as it did originally but that might be the heat...

CybilLiberty · 18/08/2009 12:23

Your hair does suit you like that mamazon. I'm impressed you were brave enough to have a try

AvadaKedavra · 18/08/2009 12:39

Looks fabulous Mamazon

I don't know if I am brave enough but I do need a chop, my hair is just off resting on my shoulders, is that long enough to do this?

MamazontheDailyMailtakingadump · 22/08/2009 20:38

i'd say that if your hair is shoulder length it'll work well.
youwont lose much of thelength but it'll be enough to give it some extra layers and trim it up a bit.

PM73 · 22/08/2009 21:46

I did mine last time & everyone has commented on it,saying how good it looks, but the one thing i dont quite get is when you cut it do you cut straight across the ponytail & then what?

I just cut straight across & sort of chipped in with the scissors but some of my layers felt too heavy still.

MamazontheDailyMailtakingadump · 23/08/2009 13:37

thats what i did PM.

Dp still doesn't believe i did it myself and i have had a lot of compliments about my hair.

now whether thats because its a gfood cut or simply that my hair before looked so awful anythig was an improvement i don't know.
