I bought this today and DH has told me it looks cheap and tacky.

It was for the dining room. I drove miles to buy it.

I've taken it down. I'm barly speaking to him.

So what wouldn't look cheap and tacky and ridiculous in my dinding room???

hahah
its vile

Greensleeves · 11/07/2009 17:28

it isn't vile

this is vile

Quattrocento · 11/07/2009 17:29

I think you should take it back. Irrespective of what you originally thought of it. If you hang it up it will be a persistent reminder that your DH (and sundry mners) think it is horrible. Sorry that your pleasure has been spoiled.

zookeeper · 11/07/2009 17:30

it's not nice - makes me think of a nappy wrapped around a lightshade. sorry

HecatesTwopenceworth · 11/07/2009 17:30

I think it looks quite old fashioned, tbh.

SoupDragon · 11/07/2009 17:32

I think it looks yukky.

purepurple · 11/07/2009 17:34

while I don't dislike it, I do find it a bit boring
do you and your DH have wildly different styles?
It can be a bugger doing that compromising thing, can't it?
I don't do it very well, but I do let him choose some things and just live with them.

LynetteScavo · 11/07/2009 17:35

Greensleeves - My DM owns a shade like that!

MadBadandDangerousToKnow · 11/07/2009 17:35

I think it would be better in a boo-dwah.

MrsSeanBean · 11/07/2009 17:38

Would something like this work as an alternative?

MrsEricBana · 11/07/2009 17:40

Bet he couldn't do better! I agree with person who said poss an odd mix of textures but tricky to say without seeing in situ. I would say Laura Ashley lighting is quite nice. As quite pricey why not return it and get it again when room finished and try it in finished setting (presuming if you are like us that will take you more than the returns period to finish the room!)

Greensleeves · 11/07/2009 17:40

MSB that one DOES look cheap and tacky

LynetteScavo · 11/07/2009 17:40

MrsSeanBean - I think that might make DH faint.

I think this might be a compromise.

Ahh, I see it's the crystal DH objected to. I love tacky crystal

LynetteScavo · 11/07/2009 17:54

Yes, he objected stongly to then "dangly down bits" - they hang lower than the picture shows.

So what is the answer? It will be seen from th hall, so one of the first thing s to be seen when I open the front door, so I want something really lovely, but not too expensive.

OP posts:
hullygully · 11/07/2009 17:55

That second one looks like it's got a rash.

MrsSeanBean · 11/07/2009 17:59

How about a chandelier, no dangly bits on these as such. If the room is small, maybe something like this

If it's a larger room, could take a larger light fitting - like this

As both chandeliers 'turn upwards', may be less of a problem with depth??

HuffwardlyRudge · 11/07/2009 18:07

I'm trying to imagine a world in which my husband had an opinion on our dining room light fitting.

This is what I love about Mumsnet. You meet people with very different lives to your own.

ButterflEi · 11/07/2009 18:26

i think your first choice was really nice LS i would probably tell DH to pee right off and put it back up if it was me or throw a strop until he gave in (ok i would prob be option number 2) anywho... i like it simple design with a twist
xx ei xx

LynetteScavo · 11/07/2009 20:18

He's just found out it was from Laura Ashley. He said he thought it was £5.00 form Wilkinsons.
He saysthis would "Sort of be OK"

thisisyesterday · 11/07/2009 20:21

i like it, but also like the second one you linked to.

i'd just put it back up and tell him to get over it tbh

bruxeur · 11/07/2009 20:23

It's quite spectacularly Hyacinth. And doesn't even have ironic cheese factor.

OrangeFish · 11/07/2009 20:29

I think I like the selection of your husband a bit better. As Sofia said, the first one is very feminine, and IMO would only work in a house with a formal style (or elegant in old lady style) than in a house with men, particularly men who can notice the decoration around them.
