Borrowing clothes from friends is a good approach to one-off events that demand clothes that you wouldn't necessarily have in your wardrobe, or want to spend b'day money on.

geordieminx · 07/07/2009 21:54

No sorry Chocolatepeanut I wouldn't wear that outfit probably at all during the day.

I would probably go against the grain with white linen trousers as well, not my cup of tea. Agree with the point about wearing them once too. What about a skirt?

Good luck anyway

tattycoram · 07/07/2009 22:08

Blu's idea is a good one. If you can borrow some nice trousers from a friend you can buy your nice tops and not worry

foreverchanges · 07/07/2009 22:27

no imho ballet pumps then you wont be noisy down the aisle !

LobstersLass · 07/07/2009 22:33

White skinny jeans, with heels...at a baptism!

Absolutely not.
Trashy in the extreme.

Mind you, perhaps that's the look you're going for.

gnatbite · 07/07/2009 22:35

TBH, I reckon anything goes these days when it comes to things like Christenings - seriously, if you think you'll be comfortable then just go for it!

FWIW, I got all dressed up for the last Christening I went to and was the only one NOT in jeans when I got there

BonsoirAnna · 08/07/2009 06:50

I think you could get away with white skinny jeans for a baptism if (a) you are very slim (b) you wear very beautiful flat shoes or sandals and a very glam top that need the balance of plain trousers in order not to be OTT

weegiemum · 08/07/2009 07:34

I always wear jeans to church - well, almost always!

Whoever said you will be 'judged' for wearing anything if you don't go every week obviously is used to a very different type of church to mine!

A baby was dedicated (we only baptise adults) in our church on Sunday past and Mum wore a blue print tunic top and white jeans with flat shoes - she looked great! But no-one should be looking at you at all!

JesuslovesCatholicSchools · 08/07/2009 07:39

It's fine if you are in an episode of shameless, wetting the babies head down the 'jockey' buffet of sausage rolls and prawn rings from iceland

skinny white jeans

get yourself a simple pair of dark jeans or trousers.

worzella · 08/07/2009 07:47

I'm with weegiemum - if the OP wants to wear jeans etc. then that's fine. The parents of the child concerned will want her there for support and shouldn't be bothered what she's wearing. The bigger issue is how she will feel in them - and with the many comments above against her wearing of the white jeans, she may feel unnecessarily uncomfotable.
Go for it Chocolate Peanut - wear what you would feel good in - the vicar won't mind (or at least shouldn't!) and God certainly wont.
Enjoy

Lizzylou · 08/07/2009 07:54

I agree that ballet flats/nice flat sandals would look fine with white skinny jeans and a nice top.

I got all dressed up for my boy's christening last year and felt v overdressed (everyone else, with the exception of my Mom, was in white linen trousers ).

If you could borrow something from a friend, even better. Then you can spend your voucher on something you really want and need.

giantkatestacks · 08/07/2009 08:07

weegiemum - I think you completely misunderstood what I was saying - I think if you go to church all the time that you will know that it doesnt matter what you wear - its only people who go for 'events' that worry about it because people who dont go tend to dress up more iyswim.

FimbleHobbs · 08/07/2009 08:24

I wear jeans to church pretty much every time I go. Except when it was v hot and I wore shorts. But so did the vicar, and as far as I know neither of us have been struck down yet.

Wear whatever you like and feel comfortable in. Its nice to be smart enough to show the the baby's parents, and the church who are 'putting on' the baptism, that you respect the occasion, but other than that does it really matter what anyone wears to church?

Simples · 08/07/2009 08:52

God yes where what you want.
I think MN baptisms are very fancy schmancy events

People wore Jeans to ours and my dad is a ( not trendy lefty) vicar

Simples · 08/07/2009 08:52

All i would say is style it so you dont look nightclubby! not too much make up or flesh on show

weegiemum · 08/07/2009 08:56

GKS - I think what I was trying to say (sorry haven't slept much) is that no-one should judge anyone for what they wear to church. At my church, we're just delighted people are there and are glad to see them no matter what they are wearing.

MInd you, my church is a fantastically eclectic mix from jeans to suits to hats to fabulous African costumes and other ethnic dress, to the wee old man who always wears a kilt, to my dd1 in her tie dye tops!

White skinny jeans would blend right in!

Simples · 08/07/2009 08:57

Yes I think Mn generally has rather straight christenings - regular church goers seem to not mind at all.

Simples · 08/07/2009 08:58

( and when I was a church goer you always noticed that "just for baptism" types always over dressed)

Elenio · 08/07/2009 09:05

I think it is fine. Lots of people here (Greece) wear jeans (including white skinny jeans) to church...if fact amongst the rich Athenian ladies it is almost their dress code!

White skinny jeans (especially if they are not denim) can look very smart and certainly a whole lot smarter than boring linen.

I think some of you are being ridiculous and rude, especially the comments regarding the bikini.
