I think DH has just killed my new dress for me! Can you save it?

I bought this dress from eBay (not that exact one, obv).

I LOVE Liberty print, and it was a total bargain - £7, brand new with tags (which say £75).

It arrived yesterday. Print is really pretty, top fits perfectly. Skirt just above the knee, which is a little shorter than I normally like but not a disaster.

I'm trying it on and checking myself out in the mirror, when DH wanders in and says "Is that the French maid look?"

And now I can't get it out of my head. Is he right? Can I ever wear the thing? Please help me...

Oh gawd. It's horrible! I'm with your dh, sorry.

norksinmywaistband · 06/06/2009 09:14

I have to say that was my first thought as well, but I am no style guru

Well I am.(Big Head) And it's still nasty. Would you have paid £75 for it?

pavlovthecat · 06/06/2009 09:15

sorry, but i agree with him, especially if it is short.

alicecrail · 06/06/2009 09:16

It probably looks better on

mrsmaidamess · 06/06/2009 09:18

Yes if you are a maid

PuppyMonkey · 06/06/2009 09:18

Yuk!

ilove · 06/06/2009 09:19

erm......

frazzledgirl · 06/06/2009 09:20

Mrsm: course I wouldn't have! I wouldn't pay £75 for many dresses, though, hence the eBay habit.

The problem is that the skirt's too short, I think. If it was longer it wouldn't stick out so much and you wouldn't get the FM look.

Waaaaaah.

OK, so given that it won't work as a dress, is there anything I can do to use the fabric?

Have to admit I no like but its personal taste, however, if dp every passed comment like that I'd never wear it (dp NEVER comments beyond 'is that new?', to which, of course, the response is 'what this? No, had it AGES' )

mrsmaidamess · 06/06/2009 09:22

Sell it at a car boot. Some one will have it.

TrinityRhino · 06/06/2009 09:22

oh no that really is an awful dress
sorry

hoppybird · 06/06/2009 09:23

Men like that French Maid fantasy. Maybe save it for the bedroom? ;)

TrillianAstra · 06/06/2009 09:28

I really like the look of the bottom half as a skirt.

alicecrail · 06/06/2009 09:30

Perhaps as a nightie?

frazzledgirl · 06/06/2009 09:43

Well, he did say that FM wasn't nec a criticism

May investigate the skirt possibilities, as you say Trillian. Am crap at sewing but it can't be that hard just to unpick.

TrillianAstra · 06/06/2009 10:11

The thing is, if you wore that as a skirt what would you wear on top? Sometin black. It wouldn't be very different to how it is now.

I'd try wearing it once and see if you feel uncomfortable or if you get used to it.

pellmell · 06/06/2009 10:20

I think I like it....

frazzledgirl · 06/06/2009 13:04

I tried wearing the skirt but leaving the top tucked behind, and it looked v nice with a charcoal coloured vest or a white t shirt. So think I will have a go at cutting it down, esp as I can wear it lower on my hips as a skirt, which makes it longer.

I don't like it sorry, i agree with your husband.

I'm not style guru so what do I know

Paolosgirl · 06/06/2009 13:14

I was prepared to up the wimminhood here, but sadly your dh is right on this occasion!

BitOfFun · 06/06/2009 13:18

I like the French Maid look- it might help me do some housework

I'll give you a tenner for it.

MaggieBee · 06/06/2009 13:21

It's only 7 pounds. Put it back on ebay and you can probably recoup your cash. i was all set to say your husband was a git.

Wizzska · 06/06/2009 13:47

I like it.
