I think DH has just killed my new dress for me! Can you save it?

I bought this dress from eBay (not that exact one, obv).

I LOVE Liberty print, and it was a total bargain - £7, brand new with tags (which say £75).

It arrived yesterday. Print is really pretty, top fits perfectly. Skirt just above the knee, which is a little shorter than I normally like but not a disaster.

I'm trying it on and checking myself out in the mirror, when DH wanders in and says "Is that the French maid look?"

And now I can't get it out of my head. Is he right? Can I ever wear the thing? Please help me...

DH isn't a git at all, honest! Normally he'll only say it's nice, or OK, or I'm not sure, or whatever.

He just has this annoying habit of being right...

I would say it is more SOUND OF MUSIC than French Maid.

If that helps?!

Throw a fancy dress party

mollyroger · 06/06/2009 14:23

lolol frazzled, sorry but he does have a point,
If you can salvage it as a skirt, even with a black top will look better. (I think it is the 'lace' on the top which adds to the F< effect.)
You could even do leggings underneath

cluelessnchaos · 06/06/2009 14:24

I like it and would wear it, the only bit I dont like is the lacy stuff round teh collar.

frazzledgirl · 06/06/2009 14:32

Molly, I think you're right about the lace. The sleeves are actually OK in shape and v flattering.

Am going to cut it down and report back!

OK, I cut off the top and tacked down the zip and the jersey edging.

Have just tried it on, and am wearing it a bit lower (i.e. just above the knee) with a dark grey Gap vest which has a little bib front.

Looks quite nice, I think - and hopefully not too French maid or Von Trapp . Deffo better than the dress, and is unique, which is also nice.

I'd just re-ebay it tbh. You might even make more money back on it if you take some care over the photographing and the wording.

I don't really like it either tbh, but then I'm far to old now to wear anything with that amount of detail. I think that's the issue - the detailing is so fussy it looks more like a costume than a dress.

frazzledgirl · 06/06/2009 15:16

I've already done it.

It makes a nice skirt with a very plain top - the print is really pretty. Agree that the problem was in the details.

well done, a silk purse from a sows ear, I love liberty print as well and am drawn like a moth to a flame.

Elemental · 07/06/2009 22:13

Oh, I love that dress!

frazzledgirl · 08/06/2009 10:19

Elemental, if you happen to be a 10 or 12 the one i linked to is still available...
