Why is Marks and Spencers so dire?

Just found this on their website:

my eyes, my eyes

Who, in their right mind, would buy them?

MerlinsBeard · 08/05/2009 23:37

they look like they would be really noisy!!

cherryblossoms · 08/05/2009 23:40

You're not going to believe me but in the shop, in the flesh, rolled up, they are actually nice. They're a subtle take on combats and a pretty, summery colour. Really!

cherryblossoms · 08/05/2009 23:42

The waistband on the waist, the frumpy un-rolled effect and the very large, unbalanced pockets do look dire on that model, though.

TheCrackFox · 08/05/2009 23:43

I actually think my DCs would refuse to be seen with me if I put them on. They are gold, why, why, why?

littlelamb · 08/05/2009 23:47

I see your shiny trousers and raise you one beautiful catsuit

cherryblossoms · 08/05/2009 23:48

In person, they're a whitey/silvery gold, not very loud at all.

I saw a lady at the bus-stop today in really gold leggings. She was not a spring chicken and she had a "workman's bum" effect going on at the back. It was quite shocking.

They're not like that; though i can see why you would fear for the good opinion of your dcs.

cherryblossoms · 08/05/2009 23:49

Now they are scarey. It looks as though a small child has scribbled cabbages all over her.

Joolyjoolyjoo · 08/05/2009 23:50

Dear God, I remember a girl coming to my 10th birthday party in the 80's (also aged 10) wearing something like that! Only in pink!

Wouldn't have the guts myself

TheCrackFox · 08/05/2009 23:50

God, who would buy that catsuit?

What kind of hard core drugs are the buyers at Markies on?

OP posts:
MerlinsBeard · 08/05/2009 23:52

that catsuit looks like the product of a playgroups art session

snickersnack · 09/05/2009 14:44

They have a big problem, don't they? Was in the Oxford St one the other day, and some quite nice things there, but buried in the heap of absolute crap, plus another whole lot of stuff that would be fine if it hadn't been ruined by hideous details.

I reckon you could carry off that catsuit if you were a) young, b) tall, c) beautiful and d) about to board an expensive yacht in the South of France. Not for me, then.

Bucharest · 09/05/2009 14:49

Some Boden stuff looks like someone's been at the curtains as well.

southeastastra · 09/05/2009 14:49

ooh i like those disco disco

like their shoes, got some great cheap spotty wedges last week

castille · 09/05/2009 14:51

A lot of the problem IMO is that the photography on their website is rubbish. The clothes are badly modelled and badly photographed and everything looks at best ordinary and at worst plain hideous.

chatname · 09/05/2009 14:51

I quite like this, is that bad?

chatname · 09/05/2009 14:58

I also like some of the maxi dresses eg this and this

i have a problem with M&S. Sometimes they do have nice stuff, and you know its not going to go to pieces in the wash. but never really "fit" properly. unless its my odd shape (big bust, slim back and arms!). i just don't think the "cut" of their stuff is that good.

reducedfatkettlechip · 09/05/2009 21:26

Their limited collection stuff never fits me even though I like it.
And Per Una is especially horrific this season. It hurts my eyes just to walk past the display.

cherryblossoms · 10/05/2009 01:09

fleetwood - that is true. I think the "block" they use for some of their ranges is really, really odd - wide shoulders, no waist and no bust. Most peculiar.

And I think Castille is right - I was in the other day and saw two lovely dresses in the Autograph range - I can't even recognise them on the website!

fleetwoodmac · 10/05/2009 22:59

glad you agreed cherryblossom. about 6 months ago i dragged about 8 items into the changing room but looked like Hella the Weightlifter in every robot-shaped item! the dimensions are exactly as you said, most unflattering!

reducedfatkettle: i normally have a soft spot for Per Una - at least its not sailor-stripes etc - but this season i have had to avert my eyes as i walk past - just too dollymixture?

fleetwoodmac · 10/05/2009 23:00

but i still buy my son's pants there - the best, heh.

Quattrocento · 10/05/2009 23:02

M&S needs to go bust. It does really. For selling abominably awful clothes that are poor quality at inflated prices trading on a reputation built in the fifties.

Bet they are worried about the ageing demographic of their shoppers ...

mermaidgirl · 11/05/2009 11:11

Everytime I go past the Per Una section, I see loads of 50-plus ladies hanging around there...the clothes there are getting from bad to worse! Absolutely no style whatsoever - yuck!

MrsMattie · 11/05/2009 13:05

Poking fun at M&S stuff is one of my favourite pastimes

I think I might team www.marksandspencer.com/gp/product/B001VITFG0/sr=1-31/qid=1242043332/ref=sr_1_31/278-5637098-5802059 ?ie=UTF8&node=&m=A2BO0OYVBKIQJM&keywords=&mnSBrand=core&size=63&rh=n%3A43007030&page= or maybe this with these

Nice
