Why is Marks and Spencers so dire?

Just found this on their website:

my eyes, my eyes

Who, in their right mind, would buy them?

I do like poking fun at marks( spec peruna) but god i would miss it if it went.
I got a fab top long crochet style neck, from there in a rush the other day and wore out with a blazer, heels and skinnies on sat night,

Marks and Sparks (showing my age there ) always makes me think of MIl and her horrible stretchy poly trousers. I cannot take it seriously.

Nice food though but in our nearest store the food hall always looks as if it's full of old people who are only doing the shopping whilst the staff have a day off

GetOrfMoiLand · 11/05/2009 13:14

I always read about the 'renaissance' of M&S in the papers and go in to have a look about twice a year, and always come away disappointed. You havea choice of either (a) boho twat-esque per una (b) elasticated waist nylon work clothes (c) autograph stuff which thinks it is Reiss but very, very clearly isn't. Oh, and frumpy shoes and bras.

I don't know anyone under the age of 45 who ever buys anything there apart from school uniforms for their kids.

whodathoughtit · 11/05/2009 13:29

Those trousers are quite possibly the vilest thing I have ever seen, MrsMattie.

I love M&S bashing too - am off for a look on the website now to see if I can find any shockers.

whodathoughtit · 11/05/2009 13:40

Hmmm. Which multi-coloured, vomit-inducing frock shall I have?

this, this orthis?

notnowbernard · 11/05/2009 13:41

I think you win, Whodathoughtit

MrsMattie · 11/05/2009 14:56

I've got three weddings coming up, actually@whodathoughtit. Maybe I should purchase all three?

Nah, think I'll stick with my shiny olive green stretchy trews and navy frill-fronted blouse. Thanks.

ROTFL

(I do swear by M&S extra long leggings and black cardis, though )

higgle · 11/05/2009 16:51

I found myself a very nice dusky orange linen dress in M&S, very flattering - it was Per Una but much nicer than any of their other stuff, and not too long ( I'm 5'3") of course this just had to be too good to be true, just as I decide to wear it for a couple of informal outings Julie in Coronation Street turns up in it for several episodes, wearing jumper underneath it! Children already think this is hilarious so it will just have to go back in the wardrobe until later in year when hopefully no one will recognise it.

catinthehat2 · 11/05/2009 17:02

The weird green Per Una stuff goes on year after year. Ruffly bits, patchworky bits, odd fabrics stitched together with draggy hemlines. I never see anyone wearing it or even trying it on in the shop. Do they just put it into landfill every few months, or just rotate it round the stores to pretend its selling?
