I have something that will do but may want to change into something slinkier for the night do which will mean a purchase.

Went to a posh local shop to look at outfits for my sis (mother of the bride) and tried on the most beautiful maxi dress which will be for day and night. It's, needless to say pricey, so the very nice shop assistant (not on commission) said she would hold it for a day whilst I decided.

I rang the shop later to get the designers name as I wanted to look it up on the net to show DD. The owner, who I'd never met, was being vocal in the background about people looking to buy elsewhere and came on the phone to ask if I still wanted it kept back and why did I want to know the make? I feel like telling her to stick it now.

Cannot find it on the net anyway but it is so lovely.

What would others do?

prob because she knows she has it massively marked up compared to internet..if you love it buy it..dont worry about snotty woman!!

Remotew · 20/04/2009 20:56

It took me a while to find it but I did. £40 cheaper!! Tried my other outfit on and it does look really nice so I will tell her no. It must be annoying that people can come in and try things on then seek them out cheaper but that wasn't my intention.

well done, serves her right for being so stuck up!

Are you going to show us?!

compo · 20/04/2009 21:10

well in this economical climate you can't really blame her can you?
what makes you all think she was being stuck up?
she has a livelihood to make, staff to pay

snowmummy · 20/04/2009 21:17

I have bought stuff, that I could've got cheaper on the internet, from (normally independent) shops where I have received good service. I suppose the extra I'm paying is for that service. I'd never be that loyal to larger chain stores though.

Having said that if she was aggressive then I wouldn't buy a thing from her!!

5starjo · 20/04/2009 21:25

compo, snowmummy sums up my reasoning perfectly!

Remotew · 20/04/2009 22:03

I'm no good at links sorry. It is lovely but DD didn't like it and my other outfit is nice.

Going to the shop and having the advantage of trying it on outways the saving on the internet I agree. If I hadn't had the other dress and I wasn't worried about the cost I would have probably bought it from the shop.

Oh think I've just learnt how to do it. I think it looked better on me.

What do you think of it?

It is a lovely dress. I couldn't afford it but I do like it
and what is wrong with her telling you the designer? silly woman

ninah · 20/04/2009 22:16

bumping!

Remotew · 20/04/2009 22:17

DD said it was too loud. Ninah I should have had the sense to look for the designer myself in the shop, but I'm not that sharp. lol

It's the first wedding I've been too for 12 years and she is a very close relative. I was seriously considering splashing out for once.

ninah · 20/04/2009 22:24

I quite like loud myself, if you are confident enough to carry it off why not? might be tricky to accessorise, you'd have to keep the rest simple
I am very dark haired and would definitely wear something like this though I would probably spill red wine down it and rip it up the back also, given that I also have limited social exposure these days lol
It's my sister's wedding in August, was planning to wear vintage gold dress of my mothers but I have a similar problem with accessorising, it is sleeveless and I am not really a pashmina sort
and shoes ...
Want gold shoes

Remotew · 20/04/2009 22:29

The one I've already got is much smarter. I need shoes, bag, bolero and fascinator. It will look very wedding like.

Erm, sorry about-eve, but I agree with your dd.

I`m sure that you could find something much nicer for less money if you keep looking.

Sorry to be a bore. Enjoy the wedding whatever you decide to wear. :-)

ninah · 20/04/2009 22:32

go with the one you've got then with the added satisfaction that the woman's snootiness lost her a sale!
you can have fun shopping for the rest. Oh yes

Heated · 20/04/2009 22:32

I'm going to be honest and say I don't like the colours in the picture as the upper flower draws the eye to the widest part of the model making her look like she has really large hips.

But if it looks fab in the flesh and nothing else compares, then imo still buy it and having got the purchase safely bagged and paid for, say something to the person who serves you, that someone - be ignorant of who it was - was overheard being rather rude on the phone and you thought you ought to mention for future staff training/it in case it loses them a sale in the future

Remotew · 20/04/2009 22:36

Thanks for your honest opinions. Somehow it looked better in the shop. I think I've made up my mind and won't buy it now.

I had something similar happen in a bed shop when we were looking for a mattress. I wanted a specific Sealy memory foam one, or at least to try that one as it comes highly recommended in Which trials, etc for people with bad backs.

There was a Sealy memory foam one in the shop but I couldn't find the model name of it anywhere. The assistant refused to tell me which one it was as he was worried we'd go on the internet. He just kept saying that if we liked it we didn't need to know which model it was and we should just buy it.

After a heated discussion we left and I did find one on the internet for £300 less than the one in the shop.

GracieGrace · 21/04/2009 09:02

omg you arent REALLY wearing that?

LibrasJusticeLeagueofBiscuits · 21/04/2009 09:06

I'm trying to find a nicer way to say what GracieGracie has said but I am glad to see you have decided not to buy it. I generally think if things look bad on the model they are not going to look much better on an ordainary person! It's just so in your face.

aseriouslyblondemoment · 21/04/2009 09:42

eve as i know you
i would say v.def.you
would suit you well and you could carry it off
would def need a good tan and no last min.mozzie bites to spoil the look tho
shame they were so bloody snotty in the shop their loss i guess

SusieDerkins · 21/04/2009 09:45

I generally like bold things but the "pattern" is too big for the dress and makes it look as if she's spilt something pink down her front.

Sorrento · 21/04/2009 10:18

This just makes me laugh, people want to go and try dresses on, lie on beds and then go online and find them cheaper, do you really not understand that if you keep doing this there will be nowhere for you to try things on left ?

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 21/04/2009 10:34

I totally agree and if the man had been willing to tell me the model of the mattress so I could make sure I was getting the right one I would have bought the one in the shop and happily paid more for good service and the opportunity to try it beforehand.

dexter73 · 21/04/2009 10:49

I am afraid I am not rich enough to fork out an extra £300 on a mattress that is expensive enough to start with! I always look for cheaper deals on the internet when buying branded goods.
