I have something that will do but may want to change into something slinkier for the night do which will mean a purchase.

Went to a posh local shop to look at outfits for my sis (mother of the bride) and tried on the most beautiful maxi dress which will be for day and night. It's, needless to say pricey, so the very nice shop assistant (not on commission) said she would hold it for a day whilst I decided.

I rang the shop later to get the designers name as I wanted to look it up on the net to show DD. The owner, who I'd never met, was being vocal in the background about people looking to buy elsewhere and came on the phone to ask if I still wanted it kept back and why did I want to know the make? I feel like telling her to stick it now.

Cannot find it on the net anyway but it is so lovely.

What would others do?

You can see why these people get defensive though surely ? I buy everything online because I do not require service of any description, but if it's important too you, then it'll be gone soon, that's all.
Oh and just so you know the average margin is 20% so that's what the shops will add to the price, it's not a case of it's expensive enough in the first place and shops are ripping you off, they simply have to add 20% to make a profit, allowing for faults, returns, staff, heat, light and rent and council tax.

Ledodgy · 21/04/2009 10:54

Sorrento, well the shops should be more reasonably priced then. Are you seriously saying we should all go out and buy the first thing we see at the first price to keep businesses alive?

Ledodgy · 21/04/2009 10:55

Cross posts then.

Sorrento · 21/04/2009 10:56

As i said I do not require the option of trying things on, lying on beds, sitting in chairs etc, I am happy to order online, but if you do require that option then it's bloody cheeky going to an independant store, using their facilities and then under cutting them online.
They just will not be there much longer with council tax rising and rents rising at a stupid rate unless you support them.

OrmIrian · 21/04/2009 10:57

It's pretty but do you have teeny weeny hips? That is the only thing that would worry me a little.

littlesilversnowbeetle · 21/04/2009 10:58

It looks like a fkn train wreck

I'd look for something a bit quieter personally

Ledodgy · 21/04/2009 11:01

I know wat you're saying and i'm all for supporting local business when they provide a product that you can't get elsewhere such as homegrown produce etc but when it comes to things like clothes and beds that I can find cheaper online I will. I am not one to try on in shops, I like you just buy online and try on at home. I can understand why people would though it's not just the businesses wo are struggling.

Ledodgy · 21/04/2009 11:02

Yeah I really don't like the dress either. Sorry abouteve!

ABetaDad · 21/04/2009 11:07

My wife has had the same 'snotty woman' experience in a boutique clothes shop where we live. She walked out without buying a thing and will never go back.

The thing is my wife shops in the most expensive shops on Bond St and everywhere else in between including Primark which she thinks is great as well. Silly for a shop to lose my wife as a customer before she even buys.

There is no need to be that way with people. Don't give her your custom if you can find it elsewhere.

I know I can buy cheaper stuff on the internet sometimes but if a shop gives good service I am willing to pay more.

For example, I bought this laptop I am typing on now just a few days ago from a local IT shop. I absolutley refuse to buy a PC over the internet now because of the rubbish service I have had in the past.

Sorrento · 21/04/2009 11:15

I think we've all had our "Pretty Woman" moment, sounded to me like the woman was trying to protect her livelihood though that's all.

dexter73 · 21/04/2009 11:20

I think it is a sad reflection on the service we receive in shops if we feel like we should pay extra for good service.

GracieGrace · 21/04/2009 15:05

to the OP
i think you behaved badly and moreover rudely.

Remotew · 21/04/2009 18:05

I was only asking for the designer to see if I could find it on the internet to show DD a picture. Not to buy it cheaper. If I was going to get it I would have got it from the shop. I've changed my mind about it now. I thought she was being rude inferring that this was my intention when it wasn't.

She's probably heard that tale before though, wouldn't you agree it sounds a bit fishy ?

Remotew · 21/04/2009 19:14

Yes I realised after she was sounding off. Think I was guilty of being niave. Will be more clued up in future.

Latest saga in my dress dilemma, if anyone is still interested.

My sis and neice went back to the shop today. My neice said the dress was stunning (it looks much better than the pic I linked). Raved about it to one of the other guests who is going to try it on tommorrow!!!!

I am so annoyed. I resigned myself to not buying it, couldn't justify the expense etc, and now some other family member of the groom might have it on.

I'm very upset over a stupid dress.

ninah · 25/04/2009 10:41

er show her this thread?

mileniwmffalcon · 25/04/2009 10:50

so if you bought it would you get it from the shop that you've now been to twice or online?

tbh whilst it would have been better business sense to keep her mouth shut i don't blame the shop woman at all. i used to work in an indie shop and people did this all the time - use our time and expertise then bugger off and buy online. the shop had to close, so sadly we can't offer that excellent advice and experience to anyone now, even those who are prepared to pay for it

aseriouslyblondemoment · 25/04/2009 13:39

eve what now?

Remotew · 26/04/2009 11:30

Friend tried it on but it didn't suit her phew!

I have decided I'm going to buy it now. Just need to decide where to buy it from. I have only been to the shop once, was put off going back. In fact I've only ever been in the shop once in my life even though it's local. I've never been able to buy designer dresses before. If I was trying to be devious at the onset I would have read the flipping label and avoided the dilemma.

Thanks everyone who has contributed.

Does it look a lot better in rl than the photo?

Remotew · 26/04/2009 11:40

Much better, the colours are more subtle than in that link. There is a shorter version on a website for a shop which shows it more accuratley. Also it doesn't look good on the model.

OP posts:
HecatesTwopenceworth · 26/04/2009 11:46

Oh good, I'm glad to hear it! Cos now I can be honest and say that dress, on that photo, look fucking awful!!!! I am very glad that it looks different in rl.

Have fun at the wedding!

Remotew · 26/04/2009 13:57

It's OK, I agree about the pic. I'm looking forward to the wedding it's about time we had something to celebrate with the family.
