I am currently a size 12, probably 10 top half. I have hips, a big bum and big legs but my top half isn't really that big. I need a nice dress (or other outfit) to wear to a hen night and wedding that are coming up soon. I want to look dressed up, and really want something that will make me look slimmer and enhance my shape (skim over larger bottom area and show my waist/top half). Does any one have any ideas for me?

I was thinking that a strapless 50's style dress might look nice? But I have no clue what is the best for my shape really. Probably describe my shape as english pear?!

Bump for you.

Jewelsandgems · 13/04/2009 21:05

I think this is lovely and had goegeous detailing around the bust:
ted baker dress

But, can you give me more info? Preferred colours? Or, on the other hand, anything you hate?

BoysAreLikeDogs · 13/04/2009 21:07

Strapless is dull and unimaginative, sorry.

DO you have a budget, and can you get to the shops or is it all internet ?

TrillianEAstraEgg · 13/04/2009 21:11

I have three strapless dresses.

Jewelsandgems · 13/04/2009 21:22

I don't have any strapless dresses because they are not flattering for bigger boobs. But, am very envious of others wearing them - I don't think they are dull at all. There is always 1 shoulder dresses which I think are still keeping the detail to the top half.

Heathcliffscathy · 13/04/2009 21:24

i do think that strapless dresses, particularly of the 50s variety, have had their day...

i'll go look and then link something that might suit...

LauriefairycakeeatsCupid · 13/04/2009 21:24

yes, strapless would look great on your figure as it would skim the bottom half - think Kirsty Allsop style

However, they're not as fashionable this year, what about a one shoulder dress, maybe a jersey maxi dress?

this is nice, not one shoulder though

oneyummymummy · 13/04/2009 21:28

jewels that dress is beautiful.

But I have a budget...probably around £50. I can get to the shops or online really!

I am open for sugestions, I thought strapless might work for my figure?? I used to be size 8 pre-baby so Im not used to dressing well for my size now, as I havnt had a wedding or anything since my DD.

Don't mind colours, I usually waer black. I am in my twenties.

this is in budget and the right size

oneyummymummy · 13/04/2009 21:32

Oh...lovely dress laurie but that brings me to another key fact....I am only 5'3", so need something just above the knee really, otherwise I just get swamped!

I dont have much of a budget at the moment as I am saving for my own wedding, so need something a little cheaper....

how about grey and black - this dress is cool

X-posted! That second link is not working.

sorry

LauriefairycakeeatsCupid · 13/04/2009 21:36

the back view of that grey and black one is particularly sexy, not seen any dresses like that one before

oneyummymummy · 13/04/2009 21:42

Ok, First one is definitely not me, but the second one is nice I like the big bow on the front. The theme for the hen party is glamorous...so I need something dressy, but I dont want to look too over-the-top.

I want to be able to wear the dress again.

ASOS looks very good for these types of dresses.

BoysAreLikeDogs · 13/04/2009 21:50

from Uttam Direct less than £20

oneyummymummy · 13/04/2009 21:57

That one is very nice. Have you ordered from them before, I've never heard of them?

Think the a-line skirt will skim my hips and [hopeful emotion] make them look smaller.

OP posts:
BoysAreLikeDogs · 13/04/2009 21:58

yes uttam a re v good

Comes with my personal recommendation

oneyummymummy · 13/04/2009 22:04

I LOVE black and wear it a lot! But I think I need some inspiration and some confidence to wear something a little 'diffrent' without looking 'frumpy'. Does that even make sense?

OP posts:
MrsMcCluskey · 13/04/2009 22:06

Def dont do strapless will make your boobs look flat/ ssaggy and out of proportion to your bottom half.
I would go for something that draws attention to your top half ie nice shoulder straps

Aefondkiss · 13/04/2009 22:10

also uttam - it would do the hip skimming thing.

oneyummymummy · 13/04/2009 22:11

I was thinking that too, after having a little look, I think something with wide straps going into a v-plunge at the front (when I say plunge...I dont mean down to my stomach) and an a-line skirt. Now I just need to find something...Im not very good at that part.

I have to go offline now, but any suggestions, I will pick up in the morning, thank you for all your MN style...
