is it just me or does anyone else think fascinators are ridiculous?

I have been looking online at various fascinators and just think they look stupid. I have always worn hats to weddings in the past however I have quite a striking dress for this years weddings which calls for something a bit more understated.
I can't do the fascinator thing ladies. It's just not me.Maybe I could just wear a flower? What do you think? Real flower or fabric?
Sorry. Am rambling now.....

My mum wore a red one to my wedding, and my drunk mate asked me very loudly who was the woman who's head looked like it was on fire!
I think you need a lot of confidence to wear one and not worry about looking daft.

southeastastra · 13/04/2009 21:22

i like them, bring back weird headwear

mrsmaidamess · 13/04/2009 21:23

They are old hat now. Geddit, old hat??

Stretch · 13/04/2009 21:24

My mum wore one for my wedding too, looked really nice. She can't really wear hats as she has a really small head!!

Gingerbear · 13/04/2009 21:26

They are for orange women in too high heels at Aintree or St Ledger.

Gingerbear · 13/04/2009 21:27

gah!

here

mrsmaidamess · 13/04/2009 21:31

I think a fresh flower, a daffodil or a dandelion tucked behind the ear can create a fetching (and unique) look.

waitingforgodot · 13/04/2009 21:40

Gingerbear. Oh my feckin god.
Why why why????
Mrsmaidamess-I agree with the fresh flower idea and someone else I think on here suggested it-as long as it's not wilty.
How can you get a fresh flower to stay in your hair?

Clip it surreptiously behind ear. Or tuck it into bun.

waitingforgodot · 13/04/2009 21:44

Good plan. I am now going for a beehivey bun type thing with very loose bits at the front. Sounds a mess but actually nice. I could incorporate a nice fresh flower in somewhere as I sure ain't orange or frou frou enough for the fascinator.

HolyGuacamole · 13/04/2009 21:50

Yep, agree. Not to be seen on women under 50. Some fascinators are so big and feathery they look like a birds nest and can overshadow wedding pics. I saw pics once where the womans fascinator made the girl standing behind her look like she had a big feathery moustache.

LauriefairycakeeatsCupid · 13/04/2009 21:52

laughing my tits off at the idea of a daffodil behind the ear

waitingforgodot · 13/04/2009 21:56

A dandelion would look better though.

OP posts:
oliviaMumsnet · 13/04/2009 22:08

Well I think cherry chau do a pricy but great line in feathery bits (agree fascinator is a stupid name) but if you don't fancy it I would go for real flower.
waitingforgodot Fancy linking to your dress for me?
(are you going to my brother's wedding?!)

oliviaMumsnet · 13/04/2009 22:09

Sorry hadn't caught up with thread
TO keep flower in your hair, tell florist it's to go in your hair and she can put it in a comb or similar.
HTH

playftseforme · 13/04/2009 22:12

DH and I compile our own league table of the worst fascinators at the weddings we go to (horrible I know but sooooo much fun too)

This is my dress-could only find a pic on ebay.

OliviaMumsnet · 13/04/2009 23:01

oh that's v similar to the one I like.
It's a lovely dress.

waitingforgodot · 14/04/2009 09:39

Unless your brother is getting married to my sister in the Scottish Highlands??

OP posts:
Spidermama · 14/04/2009 19:51

Oh they're absolutely absurd. Risible. I have yet to see a non-ludicrous fascinator.

paolosgirl · 14/04/2009 20:00

I like them providing they are smallish and subtle - not these great stonking things that look like you've got another head growing. Waity Katie is fond of those [barf emoticon].

Lilymaid · 14/04/2009 20:12

I have a largish head and because of its shape I can't wear a hat. I wore a comb with a flower arrangement matching my bouquet at my wedding. I've avoided hats at weddings ever since, but when the DSs get married I shall wear fresh flowers on a comb again.
