Calling all wavy/curly haired mnetters who are not fighting the curl

sleepsforwimps · 27/03/2009 17:36

Please help me, I do not know how to tame my hair. It was wavy until I had my dd then it went curly, must have been the shock of childbirth. Looked like I'd had the roots permed for a while there (not a good look) Luckily it has now grown enough that it is all the same level of curliness, hurrah!

I just can't seem to find a product that isn't heavy, but holds the curl and stops the frizz.

Help!

mousse

EdwardBear · 27/03/2009 17:38

mousse here too

ChippyMinton · 27/03/2009 17:38

Frizz-ease (not me but my curly-headed friend, whose life has been transformed since the advent of the serum)

thumbwitch · 27/03/2009 17:39

ah sorry, I just let mine be. I was given some "product" by a friend - I used it once and never again as, yes, my hair was more curly and less frizzy but I objected to having crispy hair.

I have also had John thingy's Frizz-ease suggested by other friends who suffer from frizz - frankly it doesn't bother me.

rubyslippers · 27/03/2009 17:40

Aveda - curl friends (around £11 but fab)

or superdrug curl creme - In a bright pink tube (£2.29 or so and on a par with the Aveda)

boots curl creme (pale pink in a tub)v good and you can't argue with the price

madwomanintheattic · 27/03/2009 17:40

mousse with a dab of something serumy on the ends to guard against frizz.

it doesn't work, but it makes me feel like i'm doing something positive.

Heathcliffscathy · 27/03/2009 17:41

wow! can your hair really get curly that is amazing!

there is something in the expression 'that'll make you're hair curl' then!

Tamarto · 27/03/2009 17:44

My hair used to be poker straight and is now a mass of curls, it's gotten more and more curly since having the DCs.

I am trying to embrace the curl also, but have been struggling to know what to use and am loath to pay a fortune for things that don't work.

I find mousse makes my hair crunchy, i don't want crunch

sleepsforwimps · 27/03/2009 17:46

Mousse really? I haven't used mousse since the eighties. The hairdresser seems to use a different product that's 'best for my hair' every time I go, this time it was Sea mist, what the hell is sea mist!

I have tried Johns stuff and it doesn't seem to like my hair. I shall search out all suggestions made, keep them coming

I always wished for curlier hair, just shows, you should be careful what you wish for!

Frizz-ease all the way when hair is wet. Leave to dry naturally or with diffuser. In between washes, I swear by a little dab of hand cream on the curls to freshen them up.

sleepsforwimps · 27/03/2009 17:47

Oh no I don't want crunch either ooooh you've brought back memories of my 80's hair, not good.

charitygirl · 27/03/2009 17:48

Haven't used mousse for years - maybe it's changed but it always went crunchy.

John Frieda Frizz Ease maximum strength serum is still - 15 years later - a miracle product in my opinion. Nothing is as light. You need to use more than the packaging says, so stock up whenever you see it on special offer.

TheJester · 27/03/2009 17:51

I have stopped bothering too. My hair wasn't curly like Andie McDowell's eg, just wavy and thick. But I have a cut that encourages the curl what an about face for me. I use Fructis anti-frizz serum in an spherical shape pump dispenser. It's really good and definitely one of the cheaper ones.

Lovemyshoes · 27/03/2009 17:52

I have tried for many years to try and tame my hair, it is very fine and very very curly.

Frizz-ease made my hair greasy and mousse makes it knotty.

Now I swear by GHD Polishing Serum, it's about £12.0o, but I use it every day and the bbottle usually lasts a year or so. You can uuse it on wet or dry hair and doesn't make it stiff etc

fishie · 27/03/2009 17:52

another vote for aveda. my hair is curly and really fine.

anything heavy or sticky (like mousse) is a disaster, as is frizz ease because it has got silicone in it which really dries out yoru hair. i should think they are good for wavy people but not full on curls.

sleepsforwimps · 27/03/2009 17:55

Oh I should say my hairs thick and layered, I was very impressed by the way my new hairdresser razored it sits much better. I'm sure you'll all agree a good hairdresser for curly hair is as rare as a product that works!

Kerastase Oleo Curl. The one you leave in. I buy it at the hairdressers, I swear by it.

bigTillyMint · 27/03/2009 17:57

My hair went very wavy when I got pg with my first child!

It's better now I blow dry it, and I use a small amount of frizz-ease serum at the end. Sometimes straightners at the end (briefly!)

TheJester · 27/03/2009 17:57

What hairstyles do you all have?

Mine is just layers and shoulder length. Longest layer on top goes to top of my cheekbone. It works. But I think I'll have to have this hairstyle for the rest of my life. If I grow it longer it looks mulletish, and if I go shorter the layers on top stick up like a brush.

Anybody brave enough to post a photo of a GOOD cut for thick/wavy and curly hair.?

llareggub · 27/03/2009 18:00

Mine is currently quite long as I'm pregnant and it grows very quickly. My hairdresser does something to stop the triangle effect and it is currently corkscrew type curls, as it was in my teens. It just turned to frizz in my last pregnancy, so I'm hoping the non frizzy curls are back to stay. Just need to sort out the colour now.

charitygirl · 27/03/2009 18:02

Hah thejester - your hairstyle sounds just like mine. As you say it works, but I think this is it for life.

Not much choice for curlies I reckon.

TrillianAstra · 27/03/2009 18:04

I have trevor sorbie curl cream (you can get a travel-sized tube to test if you like it), or l'oreal curl power mousse.

Wash hair, comb out tangles. While still wet spread chosen concotion through hair. Scrunch into curliness. Let dry, scrunching occassionally. DO NOT brush or comb once dry.

Next day (assuming you don't want to wash your hair properly every day) just wet it a little bit, add a TINY bit of the curl cream stuff and reshape.

My hair is properly curly and I had no idea how to deal with it until I came away to university and asked a girl with magnificent hair what she did to it. It's as long as I can get it (just below shoulders) with a few LONG layers around the face and a b at the back. The hard bit is getting a hairdresser who understand that layers will spring up (the shorter the hair the more it will curl as long hair weighs itself down and pulls out the curls).

HTH and good luck for your future curlyness!

bigTillyMint · 27/03/2009 18:07

Yes, mine sounds like yours too jester

DevilsAdvocaat · 27/03/2009 18:09

shock waves mousse
dream curls spray by frizz ease
curl cream by frizz ease

diffuser is essential too!

DevilsAdvocaat · 27/03/2009 18:11

my hair is a bit shorter now.
