Calling all wavy/curly haired mnetters who are not fighting the curl

Please help me, I do not know how to tame my hair. It was wavy until I had my dd then it went curly, must have been the shock of childbirth. Looked like I'd had the roots permed for a while there (not a good look) Luckily it has now grown enough that it is all the same level of curliness, hurrah!

I just can't seem to find a product that isn't heavy, but holds the curl and stops the frizz.

Help!

mine is long but layered at the front - shortest length is chin length, tapers down to shoulders and below at the back. But it's not that curly except when freshly washed - and when I was pg, the curl almost completely vanished . It's back the same as it was before pg now. V. fine though so I need the length to weigh it down.

RachelB16 · 27/03/2009 18:15

I have curly jaw-length hair - and it's layered. Had triangle hair for years until I discovered a hairdresser who could actually do curly hair, god love him. It was straight till I hit puberty at 14 and then slowly went curly. Am praying it doesn't go straight post-birth. I use Aveda be curly creme when it's wet and then John Frieda frizz-ease (tiny amount) when dry and when needed, just to de-frizz. Plus John Frieda's shampoo for curly hair is great.

Glad to hear everyone's embracing the curl - all this recent hair straightening trend has been very annoying.

elsiepiddock · 27/03/2009 18:15

I have long, thick curls.

I use kerastase oleo curl sometimes but the best by far for me is John Frieda mousse plus a bit of this applied to sopping wet hair.

curlygal · 27/03/2009 18:19

Your hair's lovely DA.

This thread is v useful for me as I have wild curls which end up as dreadlocks on a regular basis.

I tried gthat avedo curl stuff and it made my hair sticky, maybe I was using too much?

I cant stand having sticky or crunchy hair.

I am currenlty using mop leave in conditioner which is ok but not a miricle product. The kereste (sp) stuff is always being raved abuot but is v expensive I think?

Does anyone knmow of a great intensive conditioner? My hair is just so dry that it llooks fizzy.

mrsbeng · 27/03/2009 18:24

pantene curly hair mousse seems to work for me. Dry it naturally if poss or slowly with diffuser.

elsiepiddock · 27/03/2009 18:24

Any intensive conditioner, slapped on, wrap hair in plastic bag (not in front of dcs!) and put warm towel over the top. I re-heat towel in microwave every 30 mins or so.

Leave for 2 hours - fab results!

edam · 27/03/2009 18:28

RachelB, you are the only other person I've ever come across who went curly at puberty. Wow. Thought I was an oddity, now I'm not alone, hurrah!

Leave-in conditioner seems to work well for me at the moment. Paul Mitchel styling glaze used to be good but no longer. My hair seems to get used to products and stop co-operating.

DevilsAdvocaat · 27/03/2009 18:32

kerastase (sp?) conditioner is amazing but it was too softening for my hair and made it hard to keep a good curl iykwim.

DevilsAdvocaat · 27/03/2009 18:32

agree with edam. changing products is necessary for me too.

RedFraggle · 27/03/2009 18:33

Mousse here too. Just keep trying different ones until you find one that doesn't make you crispy.

I have tried endless other "frizz-specialising" products and my favourite is the Aussie one.

My hair is just past shoulder length with layers. My hairdresser is brilliant though - you really need a hairdresser who realises that curly hair is different, it's amazing how many don't grasp this and are therefore crap!

Bizarrely my hair has gone less curly since having my son.... I miss the ringlets now (after bitching about them for years )

TheJester · 27/03/2009 18:42

Rachie, I also used to have triangle hair. At the time I thought it was alright, only looking back now do I realise how ridiculous it was. All one length to discourage frizz and curl. But it was like a thatched roof, not a hairstyle. I also found a hiar dresser who can do curly hair. phew I was looking long enough.

nancy75 · 27/03/2009 18:44

can anyone recomend a curl friendly hairdresser? after years of straightening i want to just let my curly hair do its own thing, but i have never found a hairdresser that can cut it properly in or near london would be good.

frankie3 · 27/03/2009 18:46

I really love having curly hair and I have never worn it straight. I have tried everything and this is my hair routine every morning - Umberto Gianni Flirty Curls which I scrunch all over into wet hair, then I put a bit of Boots Curl Creme on the ends. Then I twirl some curls into ringlets (how ever many I have time to do, about 10). This whole routine only takes me about 5 minutes, but I do have to do it every morning otherwise my hair is a big scary pile of frizz.

I use Aussi Moist shampoo and conditioner.

Ozz · 27/03/2009 18:57

nancy 75, Unruly on portobello road is v. good. I go to Michael there. He is the first hairdresser who didn't make me sob thereafter.

BitOfFun · 27/03/2009 19:56

How beautiful you are, DevilsAdvocaat!

Frizzease all the way for me...hair still quite wild though, you can sort of see it in the painting in my pics, but you will have to trust me that it's a good likeness!

multitasker · 27/03/2009 20:01

Boots curl creme - pink cream in a pot, and its only about £1.69. The best product I've used - and I used to love Frizz ease. I use Pantene shampoo and conditioner - leave the conditioner on for a bit, dry hair upside down with a diffuser until nearly dry. Then a bit of john frieda secret agent to gloss it all down.

changer22 · 27/03/2009 20:04

I like the Aussie conditioner.

puffling · 27/03/2009 20:04

I shouldn't be on this thread as I religiously ghd my hair. It's not curly enough to look good curly and it's not straight enough either. I also find that when it's straight it needs less washing for some reason, perhaps cos when it's wavy I'm constantly shoving it out of my face.

DunderMifflin · 27/03/2009 20:07

Just wanted to add my support to the curlies!

I also haven't managed to find a mousse that doesn't make my hair crunch but will try some of these recommendations - thanks!

chisigirl · 27/03/2009 20:10

RachelB and edam
I, too, had super straight hair until I hit about 14 and then it went wavier and wavier. I wonder why that is?

MrsWednesday · 27/03/2009 20:12

I use Aussie Miracle Moist shampoo and their anti frizz 3 minute miracle conditioner, a bit of Frizz-ease on wet hair, wrap it in a towel until it's a bit drier, then scrunch it with some Curls Rock from Ti-gi then leave it.

See if you can find a hairdresser with curly hair - sounds strange but I'm sure my hairdresser knows how to cut curly hair because she's got hair like mine.

charitygirl · 27/03/2009 20:13

Aussie intensive conditioner is good.

I also had hideous triannle hair which I thought was OK!

BUt worst was the assymetric style - one side stuck out like a triange, the other side was cut really short. In 1983? No - 1996 - when I was 18! Someone said it looked like I had a mimi electric fan perched on one shoulder.

And then I had it all chopped off, so I had little sticky out 'curtains' at the front about 3 inches long . And shaved up the back - wtf?? At least I could sort of dry them straight but I looked like a teenage boy. I am convinced that hairstyle is to blame for the fact that I didn't pull once during my entire second year at university.

And then all through my early 20s I blowdried my hair (now shoulder length) straight every other day. Until I got dumped at 25..I was so that I just couldn't be arsed to get up early and do it one day, so I just washed it, slapped on some serum and went to work. I hadn't let it dry naturally in so long that I had no idea how it would look...I got so many compliments I've never gone back!

So, that is my hairstory.

ByTheSea · 27/03/2009 20:15

I've used lots of products, and some very expensive ones at that, but am finding that Boot Curl Creme is fabulous, and great value for money.

elsiepiddock · 27/03/2009 20:22

Wouldn't it be funny if all the curlies had a meet-up?
