Educate me. What is a "school run wardrobe"?

I see dozens of thread titles along the lines of "Need a dress for the school run", "What are you wearing for the school run?".

I'll probably get flamed for this and get told that I am BU but I wouldn't have posted if I minded this. Of course it's nice to look decent whenever you go out but how long does one take to decide what to wear to walk to school with the los?

Isn't what you wear on a day to day basis good and practical enough for the school run?

well for me school run wardrobe (in current weather) = sensible shoes, jeans, warm jacket, hat (any shape or sort), anything that makes my walk to and from school in teh cold wind and rain as quick and as painless as possible

Yes, exactly FAQ, that sounds like my sort of wardrobe. None of this knitted dress with knee high boots malarkey!

Don't ask me, I don't get the school run wardrobe any more than I get the winter handbag and summer handbag thing.

FWIW Mine's jeans and the cleanest or nearest t-shirt/fleece.

There is a mum who always wears white/cream and heels to collect her dcs. Latest outfit was a white button down dress. Since she always looks immaculate, I picture her in suspended animation until 3:15.

Warm, waterproof, comfortable.
'nough said.

Oh this old thing? No I've had it for years - just threw it on.

(ie this effortlessly elegant yet carefree appearance has taken me £££ and ages but it's worth it to make the rest of you feel frumpy...)

GypsyMoth · 26/03/2009 21:10

Jeans and my iPod for the walk back home........and sunglasses!

MollieO · 26/03/2009 21:12

Isn't it all a bit tongue in cheek?

For me, school run stuff is stuff I can get on quickly and look reasonably OK in with minimal effort. So a 'school run dress' for summer is something that can be machine washed, doesn't need ironing and that I can pull on, whack on some sandals and look alright.

There is a tongue-in-cheelness to the 'school run dfress' threads . but in all seriousness, for me, it's about minimal effort (because kids take up most of the effort in the morning!) not turning into a total tramp just because I'm a SAHM!

boogiewoogie · 26/03/2009 21:19

That's what I thought Mollie O, I've never heard of "School run" clothes until I came on here. I haven't opened many of those "school run dress of the year" type threads so probably not fair to comment .

However, I'm lead to believe that there are mothers who genuinely dress up for the school run and who post things like "quick, help me find a top for the school run that will make my boobs look perkier but not slutty etc..."

My school run wardrobe is whatever I have on that day for work. I don't have time to go and change before doing every school run that's for sure.

Jeans and t shirt plus coat (anorak if it's raining)

frazzledgirl · 27/03/2009 09:29

Agree it's ridiculous dressing up for the school run, but must defend knitted dresses and knee high boots.

That's been my standard outfit for months (boots are flat riding-style ones, dress worn w skinny jeans) and it is v comfortable and practical. Basically jeans and a jumper only the jumper's long.

So there

I think people always stop and talk at school gates, and quite often the conversation will include, you are looking well today, that's a nice dress, is that a new coat, you've had your hair done. No different really to when you meet people at any social gathering and pay attention to their appearance in the nicest possible way. It is not that people notice or mind you being boringly or sensibly (not the same thing mind you)attired it just is not a topic of conversation. Except of course on a very rainy windy day, when everyone comments on each others' anoraks.
If what I wear lifts someone's spirits, excellent!
I think "school run wear" is that subtle blend of serviceability and uplift.

TBCoalman · 27/03/2009 10:49

School run outfits are similar to dress down friday outfits, you know, you want to look casual without looking like a dowdy scruff bag.

I find it hard to strike the right balance in either situation and either end up looking like I'm going clubbing, or like I've been at the dressing up box, with a mish mash of jangly 'fun' boden prints all vying for attention.

School run clothes = shorthand for 'normal person clothes'.

There are plently of threads asking for advice on going out clothes, work outfits, etc. This is just the other stuff.

noddyholder · 27/03/2009 12:09

It is for people with too much time on their hands.

School run dress was a term conjured up by Cod. It is/was something to throw on if you have been outside on a very warm day in bikini, shorts etc.
