Linen trousers for the summer............please discuss.

I love linen trousers for the summer and as a TA at school I think it will be my main uniform.

Now, I usually buy NEXT linen trews but the quality is a bit crap and they always get worn at the crotch bit.

So my question is, if you spend more on linen trews do they last longer?

Am thinking of getting a navy pair and a brown pair and accessorizing.

M&S?
Monsoon?
Tesco?

Where do you get yours from?

TIA

Have you got a pair that fit really well?

If you have I would buy the linen and find a tailor to copy them for you three or four times. Sounds a bit excessive but when you think of the cost of shop trews then hunt the high street for a seamstress who could make them up for you, it could work out economically.

GossipMonger · 19/03/2009 18:28

ooh good idea but no, I have none atm.

Wanted to get a couple of pairs but dont know where from.

I lived in black and white linen trousers last Summer and found the best ones were from Dorothy Perkins. I've had a look online and in store today but they're not in stock yet.

I find that Linen trousers shrink lots so today I bought a black pair in Evans in a size 14 (I'm a size 12) to allow for shrinkage. The worst "shrinkers" I had last Summer were from Marks and Spencers.

The two white pairs that I wore last Summer that are still wearable are both a bit grey around the hems so I'm going to dye them navy and red.

White stuff do good ones - they usually have some linen ones and some linen/cotton, which are less creasy and shrinky.

SilentTerror · 19/03/2009 18:43

I love linen trousers and wear them lots of times over the spring/summer.
The Next ones are ok,I have two pairs of white ones from there that are great, more casual.
Fat Face do ones in thicker linen that are twicwe the price abut hang well.
Monsoon's are the same, thicker linen and about £45. More dressy than Next.
Wallis are good,I have 2 pairs with ribbed elastic waist that are great under dresses/tunics as the waistband doesn't cut in and bunch up,ifyswim.
New Look and DP good for casual, plain coloured ones.

Podrick · 19/03/2009 18:45

I am fed up of spending £45 for them to wear through on the inside thighs at the top in less than 1 summer!

mollyroger · 19/03/2009 18:47

I have just been given a pair of white linen Gap ones. I have never been a white trouser wearer - I ham a bit hippy and layeredy - what sort of tops do you all wear with white? I kind of want to cover my bum....

I have a black Boden pair (from sales) but they are not a flattering fit tbh...

SilentTerror · 19/03/2009 18:52

I wear tunics or short dresses with white or cream linen trousers.White Stuff are great for this s ort of thing.
Thwe Wallis trousers were about £30 I think but I have had one pair(cream) for a few years and they haven't worn through yet.

Amandoh · 19/03/2009 18:55

What about something like this MollyRoger? Or this if you've got good upper arms.

Sarimillie · 19/03/2009 18:58

Am pleased the crotch-wearing-thru thing isn't just me. Have found nice-fitting wide-leg ones at Monsoon (last year) and Great Plains (this year), but nothing actually lasts.

thedolly · 19/03/2009 19:00

Saw some really nice ones [black and fawn] in River Island. Had some from there before and they are still going strong.

Having just looked on the website there are tons of colours and they are a lot smarter than they look. Not bad for £24.99 !

Podrick · 19/03/2009 19:33

Linen cotton mix lasts better - I have some good Fat Face ones.

Other than that I am thinking cheaper might be better for 100% linen if they aren't going to last?

littlerach · 19/03/2009 19:40

I have nice ones from Monsoon.
They don't seemto shrink.

CrackerNut · 19/03/2009 19:45

I have a white pair from Principles that are fab and I was planning on getting some more from there soon, but won't be able to now

I have a black pair from New Look but they are no where near as good as the Principles ones.

GossipMonger · 19/03/2009 20:09

so even if you pay more they still wear through..........

I have some lovely ones from Sainsburys of all places. Only about £15 but are a really lovely cut. I have worn them two "summers" in a row and they still look ok, although the black ones have faded a bit. I am heavy handed with the laundry thiugh!

rempy · 19/03/2009 20:14

I have a v nice pair from Hobbs, navy with a subtle white stripe. 65 quid, so a bit steep, but they fit me really well.

Monsoon have a nice looking white pair.

White stuff have some too, rather slouchy though.

saramoon · 19/03/2009 20:30

I have got a lovely navy pair of linen trousers that I got in the sale last September for £20 reduced from £45 from Great Plains. Really nice shape. And make my bottom look great - ie smaller than usual!

mollyroger · 20/03/2009 08:55

Amandoh - thanks for looking! I quite like the - good price too. I need something a bit funkier though. (But cheap!! Fat Face but cheap )

mollyroger · 20/03/2009 08:55

gah, should have said the blue.

noddyholder · 20/03/2009 08:58

Gap ones are good You need to get a really good fit and be quite slim or they can look shabby.Cheap ones are only good for teh beach.I bought a pair from primark for over my bikini and when I washed them they were like a dishrag!Jigsaw ones are a nice quality

BarefootShirl · 20/03/2009 09:44

Got a white cropped pair from Gap last year and absolutely love them but you do have to watch the VPL - or avoid it!

noddyholder · 20/03/2009 09:44

Agree knickerless or seamless

Podrick · 20/03/2009 10:49

£60 linen trews from Noa Noa - worn through before summer was through - has put me right off linen tbh

Knickerless? Ewww!

twinsetandpearls · 20/03/2009 10:51

I thought it was just me that happened to beacuse of my obese thighs. AM sure that is a factor but am pleased it is not just me.

My classroom is like a greenhouse at the moment so from next week I will be in sandals and linen trousers.
