Ok, i need serious help, i am starting to feel old and outdated. Alot of you mn's are younger than me...i think! I am early 40's, feel about 25, pathetically immature actually most of the time lol! Anyway.....i will get to the point.
I usually wear tesco foundation then some blusher, can't remember the name, the small round pot, is it boujouis??, something like that anyway! Then a little urban decay eye liner and maybe abit of mascara. I used to wear touche eclat all the time, but abit skint right now so can't afford to replace it. I see all these people putting powder on and think maybe i need it! But i always thought it made you look wrinkly and old if you wore alot of powder?? Although it might make my foundation stay on abit longer....
Any help you could give me would be great, you know, new products or colours or essential items! I am dark haired and kind of medium skin tone.

I'm not too good on recommending make up etc for others, but I know what I can wear.

Suggestions for you : be brave, take a friend & go to a department store for a mini make over.

Or : find a friendly local college where they are training health and beauty practicioners (I know that's not spelled correctly), they're usually really keen for "older" skin, as they often can only practice on each other.

Hpe this helps.

blossomsmine · 18/02/2009 15:07

Thank you the local college seems quite a good idea. I also wondered, what is the actual reason for face powder???? Anyone know?

Hi

Is your skin dry or oily or combination etc?

This will help you to decide if you need powder or not. Poweder is usually used to 'set' foundation and help it to stay put, and alos to reduce shine.

The new mineral powder foundations are good for oiler skin types, and eliminate the need for foundation and powder.

If your skin is on the dry side, you may not need powder at all, esp if you choose a long wear foundation like Arden Double Wear. I tend to lightly powder my t zone, as I have combination skin.

For spring a shot of a couloured liner, and a brighter lipstick/blusher could update your look, you can go for a purply/aubergine or olive if you want to play safe or a jade green or brighter violet if you want to be a bit daring. I have just got a lovely purple pencil and a jade green one from Barry M, which are not ££.

Wombling, are you related to Barbara Cartland, by any chance?

angelofthesilences · 18/02/2009 15:28

hi
Virgin Vie At Home stock a product I love called Out of the Shadows which is the same kind of product as Touche Eclat but much cheaper - only £12.50 ( see shop.virginvieathome.com/search.aspx?q=out%20of%20the%20shadows )

they also have green and purple eyeliners made of wax rather than wood which are lovely and soft and easy to use.

x

right i am a make up expert-fact!
you need estee lauder double wear light foundation- pricey but lasts forever and makes your skin gorgeous

bobbi brown shimmer brick in bronze, good for cheeks and can use for eyeshadow. good multi purpose tool.

mac lip liner is a classic

i do spend money on cosmetics-it lasts longer and is worth it in the long run

stillstanding · 18/02/2009 16:02

The best thing to do would be to go for a mini makeover in a department store. They are fab and really teach you what you need and how to use the products. Bobbi Brown is great in this respect as it is more age appropriate than some of the others. Have fun!

Thank you all so much for your help I think you are right, first stop will be going to a make up counter for a mini makeover, bobbi brown or estee lauder. Love the sound of the double wear light foundation.
This is abit embarrassing......how do i know what type of skin i have?? It feels dry until i put moisturiser on, i have never really suffered from spots.....it never really feels greasy but i do sometimes get abit of moisture when i get hot or flushed.....??

I have read and heard alot about mineral make up at the moment
Thats strange!! I was just looking at the thread about the oilcleansingmethod!! Sounds brilliant, going to order some castor oil as it seems really cheap on line
I will try the mineral make up then, don't think i have a bare escentuals counter near me though, so will have to find a 'big' name that does it. Thanks

I've just taken to using LOADS of eyeliner top and bottom. I always think of Angie Watts whenever I put my makeup on nowadays.

castlesintheair · 18/02/2009 21:58

I use bare escentuals. It is really great. So much better than foundation. You can get it on-line at loads of places.

Bagebird · 18/02/2009 22:02

wombling... did I read that right - jade green or aubergine lippy?? so confused! Surely not?! Honestly, I never wear make up and would love to start a little as I am getting older. Need it more but more self conscious as a make up newbie. However, even to my untrained and rubbish make up skills, green and olive sound a bit err unusual for lips and blusher? (maybe I am just being thick here or misread it somehow) Totally hopeless and looks for a bit of advice..

notperfectmum · 18/02/2009 22:04

I'm a bit of a make up junkie!!

Estee Lauder Double Wear is worn by a lot of cosmetics consultants because it gives heavy coverage, is this what you want? If not try a tinted moisturiser. ok to use over your normal moisturiser. If want something in between try a fluid foundation.

Boots No 7 concealer in a pen is supposed to be as close as you can get to Touche Eclat but half the price.

Bourjois eyeshadow pots are great - good colour range.

I'm in my fourties too. I've just treated myself to Christian Dior's Capture XP Overnight Recovery Serum and I have to say within 7 days my skin looks amazing! And I'm not the only one that thinks so - 3 people at work commented on how amazing my skin looks. Pricey but totally worth it!

My advice when going into a department store is not to look at the brand but to look at the cosmetics staff - pick someone who looks "normal" (ie no scary orange foundation or shimmery pink lips) and who smiles at you!

Good luck!

womblingalong · 18/02/2009 22:16

Bagebird, no not lipliner and blusher - eye liner/eye pencil!

womblingalong · 18/02/2009 22:18

Doh,

I have just realised that what I have written sounds like I am recommending purple/olive/jade/violet blusher and lipstick.

Just to be clear, I meant coloured eyeliner. Teamed with a pinky blush/lip

Bagebird · 18/02/2009 22:19

I honestly thought I had gone so far out of the realm of modern make up that I had crossed the point of return, just didn?t get it at all! Ah well. Maybe there is a small glimmer of hope after all..

Still confused though. Everyone seems to think different things here - powder, tinted moisturizer, double thingies or just lots of eye make up. Still don?t understand why mineral powder is different from normal powder or how on earth cleaning with oil can remove oil. [crawls back into no make up wearing cave-like existence]

womblingalong · 18/02/2009 22:20

I would still recommend Double wear, but apply sparingly. A foundation brush is brilliant for applying for a natural looking level of coverage.

womblingalong · 18/02/2009 22:27

Depends on your skin type and what sort of look you are going for.

If you are a make-up virgin, then I recommend a tinted moisturiser (If dry skin) or the mineral powder foundation (good for oily/combination skin), applied with a brush.

Then I would recommend a peachy pink creme blush and sheer lipstick or lipstain, I really like Revlon super lustrous shiny sheers or the Stila lip glaze pencils.

For they eyes keep it simple with just a slick of mascara, or a neutral shadow and mascara.

Try Marie Claire website - ask the experts. Have a question and answer session with the make up artist that did Sharon Stone's make up for the Baftas. I thought she looked amazing and her make up was beautiful. Worth a try...
