Serious investment dressing.

I am thinking: LBD by Givenchy, Chanel 2.55 bag, Manaolo Blahnik classic black court shoes.

Am I mad?

I mean, I know it's a large outlay, but if I bought nothing else major for a year, I'm thinking it would all equal out. And possibly the investment things would last and still look good in 10 years time, whereas the cheaper things would have long since 'died'. Is this a new way to be green - splash out on a few selected things which won't date rather than 100s of more transitory things?

I do have 'form' in this area, as I bought myself a good watch 15 years ago and am still wearing it. It has worked out at about 16p per day, and I expect it to keep going for a while yet (the rest of my life hopefully, have never got bored of it .)

What a dream that would be

There have been some great £59 return tickets London-Paris on Eurostar recently...

LauriefairycakeeatsCupid · 11/02/2009 16:12

could you nip into Diptyque for me

ridiculous candle prices here

MrsSeanBean · 11/02/2009 16:12

I would drag you kicking and screaming to Chanel no matter what BA...

They've got fabulous pink rose-scented candles in Diptyque in the Valentine's display...

I don't mind going into Chanel provided it's the proper rue Cambon shop and it isn't my dosh .

traceybath · 11/02/2009 16:16

I don't think the chanel bag is timeless but then i don't think any bags are timeless and like you i have my share of mulberry and also louis vuitton and gucci.

The chanel one is back 'in' now but only a few years ago quilted bags were very much out of vogue.

I agree with Anna buy something lovely and wear it to death. Everything dates unfortunately and also if you're like me you'll just get sick of it.

I do think jewellery and watches are slightly different though.

traceybath · 11/02/2009 16:17

Anna - i've been drooling over the diptyque roses candle in pink since i saw it in the window of space nk on monday.

DH is going to be out of the country for valentines - may have to purchase it for myself on behalf of him

HelenMc1 · 11/02/2009 16:18

The thing about the 2.55 is that it looks appropriate for a lady of certain age (as some put it a 'granny') and it also looks great on Lily Allen and Alexa Chung, both of whom I have seen using one.

So I think it is a great investment - and will last longer in fashion terms than a Paddington or Motorcycle.

georgimama · 11/02/2009 16:22

I wear Chanel on a daily basis but tis only my specs and my perfume unfortunately.

How much is a Hermes handbag these days?

BonsoirAnna · 11/02/2009 16:22

I have a Goyard Jersey bag (in plain black) I bought in 2000 and it is amazingly hard wearing and great for work - you can fit a little laptop in it and A4 paper, and it still looks like a handbag.

LauriefairycakeeatsCupid · 11/02/2009 16:31

What material is it BA, lovely bag btw ?

was it expensive?

Sputnik · 11/02/2009 16:33

My current favourite is a leather binocular case sized bag I got for 5 euros second hand vintage at the market.
I should get off this thread really, shouldn't I?

My idea of investment dressing would be some fabulous boots and serious knitwear. Maybe some jewellry (dreams on).

BonsoirAnna · 11/02/2009 16:36

Mine is black leather - most of them are in the Goyard material though. I bought it in 2000 and AFAIR it cost 5,000 francs (£500) but I wouldn't hazard a guess as to what one costs now.

I had been looking forever for a bag to put work and my laptop in without that was still elegant and feminine looking, and when I found it I didn't hesitate for long .

LauriefairycakeeatsCupid · 11/02/2009 16:39

The ones on the website look like the nylon that Longchamp uses. Glad to hear yours is leather - 500 quid not bad for leather, same as Mulberry prices and defo has a bit more cachet

BonsoirAnna · 11/02/2009 16:41

Goyard is amazing quality - they can repair anything, so you basically have it for life, like a Hermès bag.

MrsSeanBean - I have been shopping in BonTon S/S09 for my DD and you might like to take a look at the boys stuff www.bonton.fr/oscommerce/catalog/liste_produit.php?Categorie=3 here - I got DD a fab bright pink frilled monokini and a pale pink shirt for our holidays.

Salleroo · 11/02/2009 16:53

No idea what a hermes birkin costs, upwards of 2k methinks, depends on the leather you choose.

got amazing Chanel sunglasses this summer, the big bug eyed ones wit the quilting on the metal underneath and got them cheaper here then Paris.

Still think the 2.55 is total granny

georgimama · 11/02/2009 17:05

I'll keep dreaming then.

MrsSeanBean · 11/02/2009 17:09

Birkin another drool worthy and timeless bag. Think they are about £5k though? Bit much, even for me...

Thanks for the boys' clothes links BA

Have advised DH to count on 4K. Dont know if you still have to put your name on a list for one. I remind him occasionally. It's still 5 years away and dd can have it and pass it on so it's going to be my legacy!!!

MrsSeanBean · 13/02/2009 16:28

Salleroo, I would definitely call Hermes and enquire about the waiting list, akaik there is always a wait. Plus - if your name's down DH can't easily back out.

OP posts:
Salleroo · 15/02/2009 10:13

There is no fear he would back out. He would buy me whatever I wanted if he thought it would make me happy. He is a gem!
