Serious investment dressing.

I am thinking: LBD by Givenchy, Chanel 2.55 bag, Manaolo Blahnik classic black court shoes.

Am I mad?

I mean, I know it's a large outlay, but if I bought nothing else major for a year, I'm thinking it would all equal out. And possibly the investment things would last and still look good in 10 years time, whereas the cheaper things would have long since 'died'. Is this a new way to be green - splash out on a few selected things which won't date rather than 100s of more transitory things?

I do have 'form' in this area, as I bought myself a good watch 15 years ago and am still wearing it. It has worked out at about 16p per day, and I expect it to keep going for a while yet (the rest of my life hopefully, have never got bored of it .)

I would agree that in general, rejection of Chanel is not a bad rule of thumb BA. But I feel that bag deserves an exception.

Also, I don't feel one has to conform to an exact stereotype in order to shop at a particular place. Obviously I would have to don my diamonds for the shopping trip, otherwise they might not let me in.

Not mad keen on the bag but the dress and shoes a big fat "yes".

BonsoirAnna · 11/02/2009 14:13

Maybe a 2.55 passes muster in England. I just couldn't here in Paris. And I am quite partial to designer gear...

MrsSeanBean · 11/02/2009 14:15

BA - has it become akin to Burberry in UK - a bit of a parody?

OP posts:
BonsoirAnna · 11/02/2009 14:16

Oh definitely, Chanel is up there with Burberry in the chavtastic league.

Sorry.

Each to her own and so on, but that really is a classic gran's bag. A tasteless gran at that.

MamacitaGordita · 11/02/2009 15:15

I am so jealous of you even contemplating such things!

OP would the 2.55 be big enough? Isn'tt it quite small? If I was going to splurge I'd want maximum sizage! However I suppose a smaller bag is better for day to evening...

Salleroo · 11/02/2009 15:19

I appreciate Chanel, but find the quilted bags a bit 'granny', I'm with MrMagoo on that one.

Am getting an Hermes Birkin for my 40th, have told DH to put my name down and no crazy colours.

Agree totally with key pieces whether they be clothes or accessories. My watch is still as beautiful as the day it was bought, have a gorgeous Tiffany's cuff etc. It is so worth it to have some nice things in the wardrobe that give you a lift when you wear them.

I've only worn my Marc Jacobs shoes once to see SATC movie and they were well oggled which made it worth it.

Bought an amazing Alexander McQueen in Harvey Nichols sale about 3 years ago, have worn it twice but just love it and take it out occasionally just to gaze at it.

Sad, but whatever floats your boat. I say go for it.

MrsSeanBean · 11/02/2009 15:25

I love the fact that they are good for grannies. If I get one, I will be carrying it for a long time.

MamacitaGordita · 11/02/2009 15:27

Salleroo I know what you mean about the gazing- I still just LURVE my wedding dress (an Amanda Wakeley evening dress) and I do like to just get it out and marvel at it. At it, and the fact I used to be so skinny!

Sputnik · 11/02/2009 15:31

That bag is hideous, but don't mind me, I just don't get the whole expensive bag thing at all, so it's probably just over my head.
But, each to their own etc.

BonsoirAnna · 11/02/2009 15:31

The only thing I could contemplate from Chanel (and they aren't really me but I still like them) are the ballet flats. I think that if you wear the 2.55 and matching ballet flats with a very plain dress or trousers/sweater, and no nail polish, that you might be able to carry it off.

FlapjakFairy · 11/02/2009 15:35

hello, new(ish) to mumsnet, hope you don't mind me crashing.... this looks like my sort of post! I'd say save on the shoes (if you need to save), or at the very least carry them about with you in a fabric bag until you reach your final destination! Don't own / have never owned Blahniks, but have trashed the heels of many a pair of Louboutins and Jimmy Choos in my day (in my pre-baby pre-arctic winter life before my feet were welded into ugg boots). Oh, it's a horible feeling.... They don't last any longer than high street IMO. There's an intital thrill then a lot of heartbreak...

taliac · 11/02/2009 15:44

Not sure about the dress, but I totally get the statement bag concept..

So what do we think the top "investment" bag would be?

And if Chanel is a bit chav, what do the other brands say???

MrsSeanBean · 11/02/2009 15:45

Thing is, many statement bags come and go, but so many of them are one season wonders. The Chanel 2.55 seems to stand the test of time, well in some people's opinions anyway..

OP posts:
MrsSeanBean · 11/02/2009 15:46

Also... ... not sure I am wanting to make any 'statement' as such, just invest in something beautiful and timeless.

OP posts:
BonsoirAnna · 11/02/2009 15:54

Ah, if you want timeless and discreet but still a statement, you must go to Goyard .

Sputnik · 11/02/2009 15:55

Just be aware that for every person that thinks "wow, she has one of those beautiful and timeless £1000 chanel bags" , there may well be another thinking "ha ha, they saw you coming, you granny-bagger you, have you nothing better to do with your money?"

Then again, if you're doing it for yourself and don't give a stuff what others think that's probably ok.

Sputnik · 11/02/2009 16:00

Or assume it's a fake of course

MrsSeanBean · 11/02/2009 16:01

Nope Sputnik, could not give a monkey's what anyone else things - would definitely be doing this for me!

MrsSeanBean · 11/02/2009 16:01

You need a Delvaux bag - apart from Hermes it's the only one with continous stitching - discreet and uber-luxe and about the same price as Chanel

BonsoirAnna · 11/02/2009 16:06

Yup, get that Eurostar ticket London-Paris-Brussels-London and you can shop at Goyard and Delvaux in the same day .
