I know it's only January, but I would like to make a nomination for the first SCHOOL RUN DRESS of the year

I bought it today in The Gap. It is their Liberty print dress. It has cap sleeves, a round neck and sits just above the knee.

I cannot find a bloody link anywhere to show you.

I'm going to give it a couple of nights out with black opaques and high patents and a little cardi. Then convert it into daywear in the Summer.

Hurrah!

Whatever floats your boat!

is it this one?

mrsseanbean · 23/01/2009 18:04

I have not come across the phenomenon that is the 'school run' yet, but am beginning to worry.

Is there a special dress code?

Desiderata · 23/01/2009 18:08

Only if you care about such things, Mrsbean!

squeaver · 23/01/2009 18:08

No NL - that's a tad short for me! I've got a feeling it might be a UK only thing so it's not on their site. There are shirts and skirts too. All nice and not too over-the-top Libertyish iyswim.

MrsSB - it's the next stage of your MN initiation ceremony, comes right after memorising the Boden catalogue and ordering your first shop from Ocado

MrsSB - the "school run dress" is legendary on MN... revered and reviled in equal measure .

I have a variation on the "school run dress" on today - the "school coffee morning dress" - a bit more glamorous and funky but same principle.

mrsseanbean · 23/01/2009 18:14

Do folks wear it just for the school run and disrobe or change afterwards?

I am not a morning person and am dreading when ds starts school. I can see myself having to get up at about 5am to do the necessary preening. Then get back into my PJs.

Earlybird · 23/01/2009 18:16

A problem with Gap is, I find, there are so many branches scattered around that a wonderful item of clothing does tend to be bought by lots of different people - so you can 'see yourself coming and going', iykwim.

squeaver · 23/01/2009 18:17

The idea is that, particularly in the summer, when you've been slobbing about all day at home/in the garden (e.g in a pair of shorts and an old t-shirt) you've got something that you can pull on quickly at 3pm and not look too shabby.

That is copyright the late great Cod, btw.

I know, eb, but I think this is a bit of a "limited collection"

Is it the brown flowery one? It is indeed gorgeous. I have a plain black cotton one in that shape from last summer but mine was cheap (£35 iirc) and if yours is the one I'm thinking of it did seem very expensive. very pretty indeed though and a lovely flattering shape.

JackieNo · 23/01/2009 18:18

Originally, I think, the idea of the school run dress was one that you could throw on quickly when youd been slobbing round at home in the height of summer - not dressing up, but rather the reverse - a single garment that could cover up a multitude of sins, but still look presentable and a bit cute.

mrsseanbean · 23/01/2009 18:18

Oh ok, sounds familiar . So is it just the 'coming home' school run which requires the dress then?

JackieNo · 23/01/2009 18:19

Ah - squeaver got there first

sagacious · 23/01/2009 18:20

Its just a load of bollocks (school run dress .. NOT gap dress which is rather nice)

BonsoirAnna · 23/01/2009 18:21

You pretend you wear it all day. It is essentially the Notting Hill glamorous SAHM/WAHM outfit, the one who is a sort of combination of Nigella/Fiona Bruce/Claudia-Schiffer-as-mother. The one no most MNers are, IYSWIM

BonsoirAnna · 23/01/2009 18:21

Morning school run is done in running gear, donchaknow??????

Earlybird · 23/01/2009 18:23

Anna - do chic Parisian mums really do morning school run in workout gear?

mrsseanbean · 23/01/2009 18:23

I had such a romantic notion in my head of what life would be like as a SAHM, little floral dress and cardi, wafting around the (immaculate) house cooing and baking, as my free time stretched out blissfully and endlessly ahead of me.... Deciding where to lunch today.

HarHar.

I won't grub up this thread with the sad reality.

AmIOdetteOrOdileOrABagpipe · 23/01/2009 18:24

Anna!! Brilliant choice of women!!!

mrsseanbean · 23/01/2009 18:25

So in theory then Anna, if I sleep in my running gear and a headband I'd be OK?

BonsoirAnna · 23/01/2009 18:25

Yup, there are quite a few mothers who arrive in running gear. But school is on a park with a large jogging contingent (including the local sapeurs-pompiers on their morning workout [swoon]) so particularly appropriate...

sagacious · 23/01/2009 18:26

Akshewally I do the school run in the morning in my gym kit, so by 3pm I've already changed (but usually into jeans and a top... dresses in daytime is just weird

What do you wear when you go out FGS ..

BonsoirAnna · 23/01/2009 18:27

Yup, MrsSB - fine, if it is sufficiently glamorous running gear, you can basically put it on at 4pm and wear it until 3pm the following day (when you get your dress out of the wardrobe).
