I know it's only January, but I would like to make a nomination for the first SCHOOL RUN DRESS of the year

I bought it today in The Gap. It is their Liberty print dress. It has cap sleeves, a round neck and sits just above the knee.

I cannot find a bloody link anywhere to show you.

I'm going to give it a couple of nights out with black opaques and high patents and a little cardi. Then convert it into daywear in the Summer.

Hurrah!

that thevoratical is not a word

LOL at Greek shipping magnate and the Moldie's special style flags

The parents at our school are almost entirely fleece-wearing lumps, thank God.

I never get the weirdness on mumsnet when people dare to say they like clothes.

How does it work that if you look smart or like fashion that you're shallow? I find it takes very little time to look nice and think taking pride in one's appearance is a good thing - but then i read vogue and like clothes shopping so am probably a lost cause.

Squeaver - am hoping bath gap has the liberty collection in - it sounds lovely.

A while ago I was stressing over a fashion thread where everyone was going on and on about the essential knitted jersey dress thingie with chunky accessories and boots, opaque tights etc. Made me feel very dull and boring. Did the school run and was comforted to note that not a single mum in the playground wore anything like it. If I dressed in half of what you lot class as "school run" stuff I would be commented on for weeks and weeks - not in a positive way either

Perhaps it is regional? Here the mum uniform is jeans, jogging pants, maybe a long denim skirt and boots at a stretch or for working mums, suit/work uniform. No chunky bracelets, opaque tights or posh handbags around. Nobody takes a handbag to school here fgs

Lemontart · 24/01/2009 11:47

not knocking it though - just to add!
Quite wistful about it all. If I were a little slimmer and more confident, I would love to dress like many of you seem to do. Sounds fab

MrsJohnSims - that weird orange/red hair colour is de rigeur in Bulgaria and Hungary too.

Desi - I think the original thinking behind the school run dress was for the one day in the English summer when the weather was hot enough for lying in the garden in a bikini/swimsuit and you could just throw the school run dress on over your swimsuit thus squeezing every last minute in the sun. That was my understanding anyhow.

BonsoirAnna · 24/01/2009 11:59

traceybath - the weird reactions on MN to liking clothes/making the best of one's appearance are annoying and silly. But I think some posters just have no clue about where to start, and it's a form of inverted snobbery to criticise posters who are vaguely clued up about fashion & beauty . I always think, though, that the critical posters are lurking on Style & Beauty in order to learn a few tips without having to admit it - so there is hope for them yet

alicecrail · 24/01/2009 12:34

So, are skinny jeans and ugg boots not in any more? I thought i was being cool at toddler group

mrsseanbean · 24/01/2009 12:38

I don't know alicecrail.

I must be the only person in the world not to like Ugg boots and have never been able to understand their popularity. [not meaning to be rude emoticon]. I'm sure they suit you.

alicecrail · 24/01/2009 12:41

Oh no mrsbean, but they are pure sheepskin and breathable and you don't get grubby jeans from the floor! They do look a bit cavemanish though

Boco · 24/01/2009 12:46

I think I'm getting a crush on you Anna. If I find out that central Paris Restaurant where you dined with your dh, while wearing that little grey silk number, is actually a Wimpy on the outskirts of Chippenham, I think my world may crumble just a little.

mrsseanbean · 24/01/2009 12:49

I don't know about Anna, but I have dined at said Wimpy Burger King, Boco.

CountessDracula · 24/01/2009 14:33

i want to know what your school coffee morning dress is Anna

KristinaM · 24/01/2009 16:46

you lot have scared her off taking teh P

BonsoirAnna · 24/01/2009 18:58

It would take a lot more than that to scare me Kristina . No, I've just been out shopping all afternoon with DP and DD...

Boco · 24/01/2009 19:22

Where did you go? Somewhere central?

Boco · 24/01/2009 19:24

Was it the Arndale Centre?

BonsoirAnna · 24/01/2009 19:26

We went to Caravane to look at sofas and tables...

Leeza2 · 24/01/2009 21:15

you didnt tell me if you are anna 8888?

BonsoirAnna · 25/01/2009 10:00

Oui

Leeza2 · 25/01/2009 11:10

I thought you were Chinese not French . Because of your name.

BonsoirAnna · 01/02/2009 16:06

I finally made it over to Gap on Champs-Elysées yesterday afternoon and checked out the Liberty print dress in the OP. I even tried on the skirt in the same fabric.

The Liberty print range wasn't for me but I bought a beautiful bright pink cashmere V-neck School Run Sweater .

Also exists in emerald, navy, beige/blue stripe and grey, and in a cowl neck/slightly batwing sleeve and in a cardigan.

KristinaM · 01/02/2009 16:58

I like the sound of emerald. How long is it, Anna? I find many of the Gap tops too short. I'm not particularly tall but have a long body
