We have a posh dinner coming up in three weeks and I managed to get this dress in my size.
What should I wear with it - shoes, colour of tights, jewellery and handbag?

I am the biggest frump and have no idea about being stylish.

Please can someone help? Much appreciated in advance

Have a look under the other images - she's wearing tights and gold colours shoes - looks nice.

Have fun!

GentleOtter · 17/01/2009 09:52

Thank you MissisBoot. The tights look like black though and I would have to wear a thick pair.
The gold shoes are lovely.

Is the dress bright pillar box red? Or please describe the type of red.

How high for the shoes?

I was going to suggest pewter shoes and pewter tights.

princessmel · 17/01/2009 09:59

Yes thick tights deffo.

GentleOtter · 17/01/2009 10:04

The dress is a deep claret red like a blood red.
I would like to wear a stilletto heel and can manage about a 4 inch (without staggering).

These are scrummy shoes and available in red although sold out online you might be able to get a pair in one of their shops You could then wear some maroon coloured tights or even purple if you are adventurous and depending on the precise colour of the red dress.

SwedesInACape · 17/01/2009 10:12

Pewter Mary Janes - but probably not high enough for you. They would look lovely with that dress with some pewter thick tights

SwedesInACape · 17/01/2009 10:16

Aren't stilletto heels a bit 80s? That dress is rich and sumptious and is crying out for understated, classy accessories.

It's a lovely dress.

SeymourButz · 17/01/2009 10:19

I'd say cone heeled patents and opaque tights wiht a sheen
patent rectangular clutch.

over.

SwedesInACape · 17/01/2009 10:23

Yes, Seymourbutz's idea is lovley.

TsarChasm · 17/01/2009 10:27

Wow! Lovely dress. There's something very 1930's 'day dress' about it.

I think def thick tights and Mary Jane with heels type shoes.

GentleOtter · 17/01/2009 10:27

It is about the only heel that I know
What are Mary Janes, Swedes ?
The dress is gorgeous and very flattering. It sits exactly on the knee when you are standing - I thought it was very elegant.

I googled it and there are some quite nice ones here

I got some great ones in.... Matalan. ribbon tie. £12.
and i wore them all day

TheRealMrsJohnSimm · 17/01/2009 15:46

I have these in brown but they also have them in black. They are the most comfortable heels I have ever worn - they have a cushioned insole which is pure bliss. They are also available in wide fit.....just in case you have sturdy feet like me

choccynutter · 17/01/2009 16:02

take it back ..... sorry not my cup of tea

GentleOtter · 17/01/2009 17:44

choccynutter. I look like a bloody Goddess in it.

It's a lovely dress agree with Swedes, some heeled shoes and thick tights and wear a simple necklace eg with some red detail as in the picture because the fabric is velvet it has a richness and a sheen depending on where the light is so too much in the way of accessories will cheapen it.

twoluvlykids · 17/01/2009 19:49

that is a beautiful dress!

princessmel · 17/01/2009 20:13

I feel those shoes linked are too clumpy. How about these? www.office.co.uk/womens/office/dearest_dolly/33/5436/14776/1/

GentleOtter · 17/01/2009 20:25

These ones are lovely but without the flower thing.
If they were a much deeper red then they would be perfect.

My tiny machine won't link, but pleaaase look at www. schuhstore.co.uk -loads of mary jane styles and colours (including a gold pair) and at an equal level of classy stylishness as that dress.

Agree with not making too much of accessories- could you try a ribbon choker in navy or purple, maybe even one made of lace?

TryingToLookGroomed · 17/01/2009 20:30

I'm with Mel on this one, they look more modern and dressy IMO
