when did you stop using babygrows?

dd is 8 months and toes starting to grow out of current babygrows. I wondered when you put your lo in pyjamas for nightime instead - aren't babies of this age still a bit uncomfortable with elastic waist of pj bottoms (esp if have been dressed in dayclothes with elastic waist? Also would have to buy huge pjs to get a big night time nappy and wrap under it? How about nightdresses for little girls? She sleeps in grobag always so would be nice and warm from that point of view. Oh, and would you use socks at night if in pj/nightie if cold weather such as now?

Dh is caring for dd some days and finds popper vests and babygrows easy to manage (has rheum arthritis esp in hands)- is it ok to keep her in these in daytime sometimes as long as feet see the light of day regularly? I sometimes think he has the right idea and we've all been hugely conned into buying jeans, pinafores, skirts etc especially for tiny babies. Must be v.uncomfortable for tinies lying on all those gathers and seams in non-stretch fabric.

my dd is 20 mths and still weras them round the house. They are warm and cosy in this weather. Just make sure the feet are not too tight for the toes.

And they still look sooo cute

MadameCheese · 16/01/2009 23:16

Definately keep her in babygrows especially as your DH finds them easier to manage. My 9mo still wears them, I know what you mean about the clothing con though

MadameCheese · 16/01/2009 23:17

Definitely even

mrsmaidamess · 16/01/2009 23:17

I wish they did them in size 14. I'd love to sleep in a babygrow.

littleboyblue · 16/01/2009 23:18

I put ds in pj's at about 5 months, only because e grew out of the ones he was in and when I went to primark they didn't have any grows in right size so bought the pjs, after a while it was just strange to see him back in grows

thumbwitch · 16/01/2009 23:19

DS is 13.5mo and still in babygros at night. I hope he'll stay in them for a while yet.. he doesn't mind them.

Cloudhopper · 16/01/2009 23:19

I have put my dds in Gap 'barefoot sleepers' right up to the age of 4. They just look so cute. But proper babygros - 2 yo.

claireybrations · 16/01/2009 23:21

Babygrows much better than pj's with big cloth nappies underneath. DD always used to end up with a damp waistband in pj's

bookthief · 16/01/2009 23:22

The last sleepsuits I bought were 18-24 months. Oh, apart from a fleece one from Primark this year which is 2-3 and fab for cold nights (ds is 2.2).

He looks so damn cute in his brushed cotton pjs, but until about 6 months ago always seemed to wake up with out the bottoms

Northernlurker · 16/01/2009 23:26

dd3 is still in some babygrows and I might buy 18-24 months (she is 21 months but not very big really) She also wears pajamas now. There is no reason why your dd can't wear them all day - very cosy!

Alibear1 · 16/01/2009 23:27

I love babygros and DS still wears them most days at 6 months. He wears 'proper' clothes when we go out and about, but if we're around the house then he is generally in a babygro.
I have them earmarked into day and night though - daft I know

psychomum5 · 16/01/2009 23:29

when I could no longer buy them in sizes to fit them......which was about 2yrs.

I loved them in babygrows

thumbwitch · 16/01/2009 23:30

I had DS in babygros most of the time until he was about 6mo - then I took him to Tesco still wearing one and someone said, oh he's out in his PJs - I looked and realised this was true and never did it again! It suddenly just looked wrong... (not easily led by others' opinion, it just made me realise..)

PavlovtheCat · 16/01/2009 23:31

My DD used to live in babygrows day and night!

And probably went into pjs at about 1 year? ish? Although she also has sleepsuits too, with the padded feet, all furry and looks dead cute! If it is cold, really cold, or if we are round people's houses who keep lower CH than us/go camping, she wears these sleepsuits (has a zip from top to bottom of one leg so easy to change nappy). When the weather is cool but not cold she had long sleeved pjs/top &bottom, and if the weather is hot she sometimes wears short sleeved pj (shorts) or just a vest.

So from about 1-18 months I guess she started going into pjs.

SlightlyMadScientist · 16/01/2009 23:32

I stopped at about 2yr for nighttime use. With all of mine I have found it easier to make the transition at night during the spring/summer as I do think that sleepsuits are warmer as the feet are covered and they don't ride up round the belly etc. So when the warmer weather has come we have moved them into PJs and then not gone back for winter.

DTDs were in them 24hrs per day until they were about 15m old - unless we were expecting visitors - we didn't want to waste money on clthes.

SenoraPostrophe · 16/01/2009 23:32

ds2 still has one for bedtime and is 2.4

Sazisi · 16/01/2009 23:32

I have some age 2-3

I use them until they're out of nappies

BibiThree · 16/01/2009 23:33

Kept dd1 and the dts in sleepsuits for as long as possible. I took the dts out in them until they were at least 6-8 months. Tesco even did a dress with a babyfro underneath which looked cute so I did it with some of their dresses so they looked a bit more "dressed".

They are cosy, comfy and they are babies after all, they don't need to be "dressed" do they?

elkiedee · 17/01/2009 00:13

DS is 20 months old and is still in babygros at night. He mostly wore babygros all the time to 4.5 months when he moved into 6-9 month clothes and then I got more proper clothes. But I see nothing wrong with using babygros during the day when they're older and I still took him out in them sometimes. He's at a childminder now since he was 10 months and I think she's happiest with him in tops and trousers (or shorts in summer) for easy changing during the day. I once got told off by a practice nurse doing his jabs because he was in a babygro and she thought that was too much like hard work!

We do have pyjamas for him as well though and used them quite a lot last summer (he was 1 year old in May) but at this time of year having babygros is nice.

I may do slightly differently with ds2 expected at the end of this month as he'll be a winter baby. He'll inherit big brother's clothes but for example if the summer is hot I might have to get more smaller sized summer clothes, and he probably won't get so much use out of the 12-18 month shorts.

I've seen some lovely dinosaur babygros which go up to age 2-3 in the catalogue - I'll probably order a set of those for ds1 to wear on cooler nights in the spring/summer when he grows out of current ones.

I do like babygros and vests and the fun designs they come in, and the few unisex designs are a good way round if you don't want to put them in boys' outfits or girls' outfits too young.

I think they're great when baby's learning to crawl too, and in winter you don't have the problem with babies getting more mobile who take their socks off all the time making you look like bad mummy.

I do favour other clothes for wear during the day once babies are confidently walking though - although DS is often in his buggy he loves to have the opportunity to walk when it's possible and he's in the mood and babygros aren't so great with shoes. For indoor wear Mothercare's made theirs better with less slippy feet, though.

littlelamb · 17/01/2009 00:23

My ds is 7 months old and rarely wears anything other than a babygrow It's easier, especially when we use the sling- I know there's no possibility of lost socks and cold feet! The only 'outfits' he really has are a couple of dungarees and some soft t shirts and trousers. Babygrows also fit him much better than outfits because he is in washable nappies- hence he has a massive bum to rival even my own

thumbwitch · 17/01/2009 00:37

I like the "bottoms-with-feet" for during the day in the winter, especially as DS has a thing about pulling his socks off - but they're not that easy to find, I ended up having to pay a fair bit for them in jojomamanbebe; did get a pair of nice plush red ones in the blooming marvellous sale before christmas and have got some bigger ones from JJMB in their Jan sale.
Ds is also in washable nappies but they fit nicely inside these bottoms.

teafortwo · 17/01/2009 01:39

For at least the first year of her life my DD was dressed in simple babygrows with bold patterns and often a funny matching hats with a knot at the top. In hot weather light cotton ones and in cold weather a light one underneath and a thick one on top or I think she had some wih matching cardis or fleecy tops. They are comfortable, tidy and simple.

I picked them up cheaply in sales or deals from m and s, blooming marvellous and mamas and papas. I found this looked the nicest and was so practical, I suppose, really until she walked. We moved onto simple classic dresses and tights or trousers and t-shirts after that because babygrows and shoes and a bit later learning to use a potty really aren't practical.

twentypence · 17/01/2009 04:46

As long as possible - I think they stopped making them at around size 3.

Lizzylou · 17/01/2009 07:33

DS2 was out of babygros at night when he was 18mths.

I miss them, I love them in a babygro

georgimama · 17/01/2009 07:41

Ds still wears them sometimes but is mostly in pyjamas now (22 months).

My real problem at the mo is finding popper type vests for his age - most shops seem to stop at 12-18 months or 18-24 months (but they are rarely in stock). He isn't ready for potty training yet and I want to keep him in long vests until he is ready to start because they are warmer. Anyone recommend anywhere that does 18-24 months or 2-3 years in full size vests?
