when did you stop using babygrows?

dd is 8 months and toes starting to grow out of current babygrows. I wondered when you put your lo in pyjamas for nightime instead - aren't babies of this age still a bit uncomfortable with elastic waist of pj bottoms (esp if have been dressed in dayclothes with elastic waist? Also would have to buy huge pjs to get a big night time nappy and wrap under it? How about nightdresses for little girls? She sleeps in grobag always so would be nice and warm from that point of view. Oh, and would you use socks at night if in pj/nightie if cold weather such as now?

Dh is caring for dd some days and finds popper vests and babygrows easy to manage (has rheum arthritis esp in hands)- is it ok to keep her in these in daytime sometimes as long as feet see the light of day regularly? I sometimes think he has the right idea and we've all been hugely conned into buying jeans, pinafores, skirts etc especially for tiny babies. Must be v.uncomfortable for tinies lying on all those gathers and seams in non-stretch fabric.

I think babygros are gorgeously practical and cosy and comfy - My DC wear them to bed until they outgrow them approx age 2ish?

As for during the day - we had a few funkier style babygro things - Polarn O Pyret do some awesome ones (and in BIG sizes to age 2 I think, but they are big sizes - very long) and at good prices during sale times.

OP, if your DH finds them handy, then I'd say look out a few funky day time ones, with stripes or patterns etc (to avoid the 'pyjama' look when he takes her out). I think kidsshouldbekids.co.uk have striped ones too.

Georgiemama, Mothrcare do age 2-3 popper vests, I got some last week. They don't have much stock in that size so you will need to call the shop before to check they have some in or buy online. It was "buy 1 get 1 1/2 price! Ive also gott 18-24 vests from M&S.

DS was in babygrows till 20 months and I used to chop the feet off when thy were getting a bit tight in the foot, gives you manyh more months' wear out of them!

Astrophe · 17/01/2009 07:50

I love these from PolarnO, and these too.

Georgiemama - is this what you mean? - would be a pretty pricey vest, but maybe half price if there are sales on.

mejon · 17/01/2009 09:41

Georgiemama - I managed to get some 18-24 month long sleeved vests in Tesco last week - I check everytime I'm there but they're usually out of stock. I think they also do a 2-3 years according to the label on the packet but I've never seen any. Plenty of short sleeved/sleeveless ones in 18-24 there though (and Asda too). Vertbaudet also do them apparently though I find their sizes aren't as generous and my DD is quite small for her age so I can't imagine what they'd be like on a 'normal sized' child! Lots of the internet shops that sell cloth nappies stock poppered vests which are usually much bigger than normal ones. The Cut4Cloth/Frugi ones are huge but pretty pricey.

My 18 month old still wears babygrows to bed with a fleece suit over the top and a t-shirt underneath.

IAteMakkaPakka · 17/01/2009 09:46

You can make them last much longer if you chop the feet off them

georgimama · 17/01/2009 09:53

thanks all!

pudding25 · 17/01/2009 09:56

DD 8mths always wears a babygrow for naps and bed but has been in pretty clothes since she was about 5 weeks old during the day!! So not practical but so cute and she doesn't seem to mind

eeky · 17/01/2009 19:48

thanks al - feel better about what I thought was pretty sensible idea for baby clothing all along...

I was ok until in the midst of pretty awful postnatal depression and lack of support from dp, managed to drag mysef along to my first mum and baby group, which is a fairly well-heeled area. I am not exactly a yummy mummy, especially in appearance, and was confonted with a packed room of the above all with teeny-tiny babies in designer outfits - you know, cordury trousers, waistcoats, matching dresses hats and shoes, tiny baseball boots, lots of lace etc etc. The looks they all gave me when I revealed dd from the carseat in a lowly babygrow! It was one of my favourites too and dd looked very groovy in it. Betraying my hippy tendencies I think. I always think of babygrows as dd equivalent of my comfy old pj bottoms and t-shirt!

DD refused to wear them from 6 months, DS 7 months is still happy in them so will get the next size up.

elkiedee · 17/01/2009 20:08

eeky, your description of the other babies at the baby group just sounds ridiculous - enjoy dressing your baby as a baby.

littlelamb · 17/01/2009 20:10

Eeky, ignore them. I went to a baby group like this too and was asked why ds was still in his pajamas

teacosy · 17/01/2009 20:23

Georgimama- M&S do popper vests and sleepsuits in 2-3. Also got some 2-3 popper vests from Tesco. Mine have stayed in these until they're potty trained.

Have to say my favourites are the cutforcloth ones (now called frugi) which are very generously sized, or petit bateau size 3a (2-3) which are long in the body but slim- great if you've got a tall toddler.

TryingToLookGroomed · 17/01/2009 20:52

Only read OP but my DD is 2 and wears a sleepsuit at night (cosy warm toes and no tight waistbands) and vests/ bodysuits in the day.
I think vests are essential in cold weather as tops just ride up leaving draughty exposed bits of back and tum. Our house is always chilly so we layer up to the max!
I've never found nighties comfy as they ride up and get twisted around, but cotton PJs are very cute for summer.

georgimama · 18/01/2009 05:36

More fool them eeky, unnecessary expense and putting tiny babies in shoes is bad for their feet.
