do my jeans get holey knees because they are too cheap or do I need to buy cheap jeans because I will get holes in the knees? - verdict please

Ds is 2.8, dd is 8m and I seem to spend too much time on my hands and knees. Jeans from Next (£20 - £25) only last about 3 months before they go through at the knees. verdict please

verdict is, next denim must be bad quality. my OH has only just got a hole in the ars* of his jeans after 1 year of sitting on it! he wore them most days. im not really a jeans person, perhaps start a good quality denim thread

MrsBadger · 09/01/2009 12:27

ones with lycra, even cheap ones, last longer than ones without

or try £10 Hula ones from New Look (v good for pears) which will at least be cheaper when they do go

MrsFogi · 09/01/2009 12:28

It's just friction regardless of the quality. My two pairs of spectacularly expensive jeans' knees didn't last long whilst I was on maternity leave.

MamaG · 09/01/2009 12:29

The New Look Hula jeans are great

Hassled · 09/01/2009 12:30

I went through this in my younger children days and came to the conclusion it was all jeans. I tried cheap and nasty, and I tried Lee and Levi and the more expensive brands.

I think there's a maximum quality level of denim - a threshold I mean, of how much kneeling on the material can tolerate. So I went down the cheap jeans route.

MrsBadger · 09/01/2009 12:36

NB it is not the friction of the fabric rubbing on the floor, it is the stretching of the fabric as you bend your knee
if you hitch them up at the thigh before bending (like men in suits do when they cross their legs) it stresses the fabric less

snowleopard · 09/01/2009 12:40

I had this - Gap jeans all went through at 3 months or so. Tried Boden (only marginally more expensive than Gap - and not bad in the sale, you can get them for £25 or so) - and they last longer, about 6 months.

DP's wear through at the bum too. Nice to have cast-iron evidence of who is the biggest laze-ass!

IdrisTheDragon · 09/01/2009 12:41

Hula jeans are great

IdrisTheDragon · 09/01/2009 12:41

And now only £9.79

extremelychocolateymilkroll · 09/01/2009 12:42

No idea I'm afraid but I love the thread title. I do find my uncovered knees are really quite rough from changing dd's nappies on the floor.

MakemineaGandT · 09/01/2009 13:19

another vote for Hula jeans here - mine are worn at least 3 days a week and are still going strong over a year after I bought them,..

BlueCowBackToWondering · 09/01/2009 13:48

I remember this well - so sad when my jeans 'went' at the knee. That stage of dc's babyhood also meant really dry knees and probs when I went to get waxed. But less so now that dc are older. So it's a phase, and I'd recommend cheap jeans!!!!

kettlechip · 09/01/2009 20:53

I'm obviously doing something wrong here (or maybe right) as this knee thing has never happened to me.. just as well as I usually wear Sevens nowadays and I'd be skint if I had to replace them every 3 months..

I did used to buy a lot of Next jeans but think the denim quality suddenly went downhill and found they weren't lasting long - they either go all clingy after being washed or go all scruffy round the bottom of the legs ime.

goingunderground · 09/01/2009 20:56

lol get knee pads or wranglers, wranglers jeans are hard wearing cause they're designed for cowboys and that

AuraofDora · 09/01/2009 21:01

next are crap i did the same to mine, one pair was two months!
i did fat face and others, they just go..

red herring ones are lasting the course but no toddler/baby now..

basementbear · 09/01/2009 21:03

I seem to get holey knees regardless of make or price, and I agree that Hula jeans are great - only £10 and really nice fit.

deaconblue · 09/01/2009 21:07

thanks will go to New Look for the next pairs. I too have scabby knees from all the nappy changing, playing trains, crawling after dd etc so it could be my scabby knees rubbing the material from the inside too.

Shhhh · 09/01/2009 21:45

What do you do with them .
I also have 2 lo's (3.6 yrs and 23 months) and also wear next jeans and have NEVER had them go at the knee's..in fact I never have any problem with them..

btw, mine are worn 7 days a week all day...

deaconblue · 10/01/2009 20:57

maybe it's my scaly knees that are the problem then? Perhaps should start new thread to find out what will help the knee ishooooooo

DippyDino · 11/01/2009 01:02

Do you use fabric softener when you wash them?
This 'softens' the denim and can mean they 'go' at the knees.

I always used to ignore the 'do not use fabric softener' until a pair of Dh's G-Stars went... Oops.

expatinscotland · 11/01/2009 01:03

DH has some jeans like this.

but he is also a working man who has tattoos.

he doesn't wear such at work, because he has to wear a uniform for work.

but he wears them out and about and it bothers me not.

andaSOLOnewyear · 11/01/2009 01:08

I've never had a pair of jeans go at the knees or backside either.
I always use fabric conditioner too.

Are these Hula jeans bootleg style?

Shhhh · 11/01/2009 10:36

I used fabric softener as well and never had any "go".
Yes HULA iir come in diff styles inc bootleg.

andaSOLOnewyear · 11/01/2009 13:28

Ooooh! thanks Shhhh
