What do you wear to keep warm when it's freezing cold like today?

It's soooo cold here and I have very few really warm clothes, as I find it hard to find things I like.
What do you swear by to keep you toasty, but which looks half decent too?

Cashmere jumper and a gilet do the trick.

I have a knitted dress which is great with thick tights and boots, i hate coats so layer with a couple of cardigans if going out and then a hat, which at the moment is either a wooly trilby type thing or a beret

ninedragons · 30/12/2008 12:09

Many thin layers is the key. Thick jumpers only look cozy, you're far better off with a thin cashmere jumper and a thin cardigan on top. Shoes or boots with reasonably thick soles are also a must, otherwise your body heat just seems to get sucked straight into the frozen ground.

I also have some knitted silk t-shirts that are fabulous for wearing as underwear. I've only ever seen them in China but you could try Chinatown if you're near a biggish city.

kid · 30/12/2008 12:13

I'm not even dressed yet and I don't want to go out and face the cold. I do need bread, milk and potatoes though. I wonder if Tesco Express from across the road will pop some over for me?! Somehow I doubt it

MrsSeanBean · 30/12/2008 12:14

Thick woolley tights and long boots are a must for me as I get cold extremities! Lots of layers as well and woll tank tops as a final extra layer. Look even more 'michelin' like than I do normally but who cares!

MrsSeanBean · 30/12/2008 12:14

Duh - 'wool' obviously!

ComeWhineWithMe · 30/12/2008 12:14

Pyjamas .

smurfgirl · 30/12/2008 12:14

Skirts and boots and leggings + jumpers with vests underneath.
I have started wearing vests from the underwear section of M&S under everything as well.

JJ · 30/12/2008 12:19

Agree with ninedragons - many thin layers and silk close to your body if possible. I have worn out my Lands' End silk underwear. Not terribly attractive, but no one sees it. And make sure your jacket keeps out the wind!

Pannacotta · 30/12/2008 12:35

Would love to wear cashmere but with two boys of 4 and 1 am not sure it is very prcatical.
Have just ordered gilet from White Stuff sale, hope it is warm.
Will look for some warm layering things, no Chinatown in Norfolk sadly!

I have been out in the garden today watching helping dp build the boys trampoline that FC got them.

Its is below zero here and i am wearing bra/vest top/long sleeve top/ jumper then huge fluffy cashmre scarf anf my coat.

On the bottom i am wearing pants/jeans/socks and uggs.

On my head i was wearing my wooly hat with ear flaps and leopard print ear muffs.

Plus some fingerless gloves.

What? I feel the cold!///////////////////

Myrrhcy · 30/12/2008 12:57

I've been wearing my ancient long sleeved thermal tops.

Which reminds me, I've also got some thermal leggings somewhere

RumMum · 30/12/2008 13:34

I definately recomment a vest.. you can get some really nice ones Next had some nice strippy ones with matching pants! (can't do a link as they've changed the website)!
primark are great for things like gloves and scarves and thick socks
I walk the the dog twice daily.. and this morning was lovely and cold fresh.

moonmother · 30/12/2008 14:09

Very Cold here in Bedfordshire too, with a cutting easterly wind.

When it's like this for walking the dog/school run I wear:

Bottom
pair of old normal leggings tucked into Thermal socks with either jeans or combats over the top.

Top
Bra and cotton camisole p with v-necked jumper over the top.

For walking the dog I add a thin bomber jacket and gilet, scarf, gloves and a hat, and timberland boots.

This keeps me lovely and toasty. Also, if I'm home alone ( I work from home) then it saves me putting the heating on.

compo · 30/12/2008 14:11

vest, long sleeved thin polo neck top, then woolly cardigan
if going out scarf, coat and gloves, don't do hats though as they make my head itch but do put my hood up

SilentTerror · 30/12/2008 17:33

Thermal tops from Uniqlo are great at keeping out the chill.
I wear layered under another long sleeved tee, then add knitted waistcoat or cardigan.
Have a sheepskin fur type coat bought from Wallis a few yrs ago which comes out when it is really cold!

RubyRedfort · 30/12/2008 17:34

H and m TIGHT long sleeved long body ts are great under things.

honestfriend · 30/12/2008 17:39

cords or similar trousers if not at work; vest top, under either a V neck jumper of a cardigan- wool or cashmere if poss.
Wool knee length coat , scarf, gloves, knee length/calf length boots and knee length socks under!

mloo · 30/12/2008 17:49

2-3 pairs socks
jeans, or leggings under jeans if I'm going to be walking slowly outside
old tank top under long sleeve cotton top under sweatshirt under big jumper (so, 3 thin layers, and 1 thick layer)
Hat on indoors sometimes.

In addition to the above, Big coat and scarf or balaclava and 2 pairs of gloves when I go outside.
I feel the cold rather badly, you could say, . But that lot does the job. Leggings, or tights even, under jeans is the best trick I know. Even builders wear tights under jeans when working outside in winter!

samsonara · 30/12/2008 19:32

A woolly hat always warms you up as most of your heat loss is via your head.

ja9ladiesdancing · 30/12/2008 19:46

a dressing gown!

my sis has just bought me the most fabby dressing gown from next. it looks like a knee length cream cable knit cardi with a tie around the middle. i have worn it all day on top of my jeans and polo neck and had no fear about being caught in my nightwear! de business!

Pannacotta · 30/12/2008 20:11

Thanks for the tips, really must get myself some leggings and tights, plus knee length socks...

OP posts:
Myrrhcy · 30/12/2008 20:14

I must get some knee length socks too.

Polo neck jumpers are also good for keeping you warm

ja9ladiesdancing · 30/12/2008 22:55

well i've got my new dressing gown on, knee high socks (in fact, over the knee socks!), polo neck jumper, the heating on...

and i'm melting.

guess it's no surpise!
