What do you wear to keep warm when it's freezing cold like today?

It's soooo cold here and I have very few really warm clothes, as I find it hard to find things I like.
What do you swear by to keep you toasty, but which looks half decent too?

It's minus 10 outside and 11 inside. I have a cashmere jumper, a fleece and a cardigan on. Plus two pairs of socks and a pair of fluffy slippers.

Oh, and jeans obviously.

Twinklemegan · 30/12/2008 22:58

Oh, and I needed gloves in the kitchen this morning.

skramblenotdieting · 30/12/2008 22:59

I am wrapped in a fleecy blanket right now as I am freezing and have no central heating.

Twinklemegan · 30/12/2008 23:00

and sympathies. Do you have anything at all?

hellymelly · 30/12/2008 23:03

silk and wool mix thermal vest or a merino long sleeved "base layer" from Howies.Tis 4 below here and I am staying snug!

GreenPenguin · 30/12/2008 23:08

apparently I looked like a Flump today.
not sure which one........

champagnerock · 31/12/2008 09:12

long thick socks, boots, three layers (camisole, long sleeve top, tshirt over the top) woolly jumper over the top, scarf, hat, gloves.

grouchyoscar · 31/12/2008 12:07

GreenPenguin was it Posey Flump?

No Central heating at grouchy's either (brrr)

Agree with the layering...top half it's t-shirt then top then jumper or cardi, Bottom half it's pants then tights/long skirt or trousers and DH's socks.

Really coldadd a vest and tights layer.

2 duvets on the bed. Big Pajamas maybe a t-shirt underneath

Live in one room at a time if possible

silvermum · 31/12/2008 12:18

agree with the cashmere - thin cashmere jumper under something else (eg knitted dress) keeps me really warm. Thick knits on their own are a false friend.
sheepskin mittens are REALLY warm though not mega practical

apuppydaviesisforlife · 31/12/2008 12:21

wooly tights, over-knee socks on top of tights if super cold. exchange rate sucks right now but i got some great socks from www.sockdreams.com - they stay up without having to hitch them all the time and they do wool ones that are super toasty.

rocket dog boots that are smarter than ugg-type ones, but still fleecy lined.

very fine soft angora mix jumper.

elbow length lambswool armwarmers.

seeing as i'm (accidentally) sporting a militarily tinged look atm (double breasted with lots of buttons) i just got me a russian-style fur hat too (plus i have dostoevsky fetish )

GentleOtter · 31/12/2008 12:26

Woolly tights
long johns
trousers
thick hiking socks

vest
t shirt
sweatshirt
jumper
cardigan
coat

hat
scarf
gloves

two baked potatoes in my pockets

we are working outside today.

GreenPenguin · 31/12/2008 17:33

groucheyoscar - probably. Was she fat and flumpish with a bobble hat?

cornsilk · 31/12/2008 17:36

If I'm in the house generally jeans and a jumper, sometimes a long cardigan as well. Outside I wear woolly tights and/or leggings under my jeans/trousers - even to work. I like to be warm!

GreenPenguin · 31/12/2008 17:37

grouchyoscar Myrtle, I am reliably informed.

p.s. - sorry about your extra e in my last post.

MrsTittleMouse · 31/12/2008 17:49

Thermal underwear is my friend. Sad, but true. The teenager version of me would be horrified, but long johns are a wonder of civilisation.

tinselandglittercoveredwincies · 31/12/2008 18:18

Completely agree MrsTittleMouse .

Today I have mostly been wearing an old thermal top from when I went skiing as a teenager under a zip-neck fleecy jumper and have been toasty.

No, I haven't kept my girlish figure , just that so many sins are forgiven under said fleecy jumper!

Do I sound dead manky for not throwing old clothes out? I'm now 34 so that makes the top about 20ish years old .

threestars · 01/01/2009 09:34

I have a wool/angora thick knit jumper which is soooo cosy, and not itchy at all. It's short as well so it doesn't make you look huge. I just wear it with skinny jeans and a long sleeve t shirt underneath.
snug as a bug.
