Recommend me a moisturiser please

I've decided to treat myself to a decent moisturiser, and need some recommendations. I have quite dry skin which can be sensitive and is prone to going red (my neck looks a completely different colour sometimes!)

I'll be 26 in a couple of week, so whilst I'm not old, I've definitely noticed a change in my skin over the last couple of years. I'm currently using the Body Shop's Hemp face cream, but don't feel it is making a huge difference.

What would be the best one to get? Or would getting a serum make a difference?

Thanks in advance

The Avene range that they stock in Boots is nice for sensitive skin.

What sort of cleanser do you use? Perhaps if you change to a gentler cleanser it might help with the sensitivity and redness. I have the same sort of skin as you, but much older and the biggest difference I found to improve my skin was when I changed cleanser from the lotion type to the waxy/oily type that you rinse off with a muslin soaked in warm water. The ones I use are Liz Earle in the summer and Akamuti in the winter when my skin is flakier and more prone to redness.

I'm still looking for the right moisturiser, but haven't found it yet but I do use a very small amount of Waitrose Baby Bottom Butter at night and if I'm going out in the wind I use a little Dr Hauschka Rose Cream. Akamuti do a rose cream too which I may try when I run out of Dr Hauschka.

depends what you want it to do. I use Eve Lom TLC cream in the winter as it's quite rich, and Chanel Hydramax in the less cold months which is lighter and smells of peaches. Both are lovely but cost a bomb!

Yours sounds much like mine and I recently started using Decleor stuff and it is amazing. Pricey though, but def worth it.

oxocube · 26/12/2008 16:52

I just use M&S face cream for sensitive skin - they do several skin types and I think its great and cheap. I read that some big firm makes it - Clarins maybe? I've just bought an anti-wrinkle serum thing from Boots (but I am 42) to use in addition but only used for 2 days so too early to give opinion on anti-aging effects.

bandgeek · 26/12/2008 16:53

I've been using Simple cleansing wipes but my face does go bright red for a good 15 minutes after using, so maybe I need to change. The Akamuti cleanser looks interesting, I might buy the small tub of that to try it.

LaTurkey, I've had a look at the Boots website and saw this Do you know if it any good?

I've got dry-ish sensitive skin and I bought a Roc moisturiser from Boots recently and was pleasantly surprised. I had been in the market for a seriously posh one but have been fine with this.

I use a foaming face wash with a muslin cloth from Molton Brown for makeup removal. Their moisturisers are good as well.

bran · 26/12/2008 16:57

Cleansing wipes are the devil's work for people with dry or sensitive skin.

If you have any muslins left over from when your DCs were little then cut them into six pieces, rinse them through with warm water and use that to rub the Akamuti cream off your skin. It acts as a gentle exfoliant. You can use the cleanser on your eyes as well, it's very gentle.

I have super sensitive skin and a tendency to eczema. It is greasy, but also prone to dry red patches (nice!). The only moisturiser that doesn't enrage my skin is Olay beauty fluid for sensitive skin.

moshie · 26/12/2008 17:04

I second the Avene range from Boots, especially the skin recovery cream
They also do an anti-redness moisturiser

bandgeek · 26/12/2008 17:05

I would spend about £40 if I knew for certain it was going to work, but I would be a bit wary otherwise, IYKWIM.

I'm off to google all the suggestions on here, thanks

Its the Avene anti-wrinkle serum that I bought a few days ago. Also their night cream. Smells nice and not silly money

oxocube · 26/12/2008 17:15

Oh ignore last post - its a different Boots range

LaTurkey · 26/12/2008 17:22

bandgeek - I haven't tried the anti-redness but I had the anti shine and that was good.

Bandgeek, sometimes expensive companies will give you a sample size to try before a full scale investment.

honestfriend · 26/12/2008 18:00

have you tied Clinique On line?
I used it for years beofre switching to Super Defense.
It got a good review in the Times last week- pick of the year- for creams around £25.

pushchair · 26/12/2008 18:04

i have dry skin and love Clarins foaming facial wash- I prefer to wash my face and neck, the one for dry/sensitive skin. I used to use Clarins moisturiser too when I could afford it but now use L'Oreal.

cornsilk · 26/12/2008 18:09

The best cream I have ever used is elemis pro collagen marine cream. QVC do some good deals on beauty products. They do gatineau which is lovely as well.

ilovelovemydog · 26/12/2008 18:12

Got Clinique dramatically different gel for Christmas which is really really smooth. Also my mom sent Skineuticals C/E ferulic last month which is hyperexpensive, but seems to work!

monkeybumsmum · 27/12/2008 11:14

Cornsilk, I second that - Elemis procollagen marine cream works wonders, but it is a bit pricey. You only need to use a teeny bit though so I figure that makes it okay

ggirlsbells · 27/12/2008 11:28

Liz Earle moisturiser is lovely and great for sensitive skin. Mine goes red very easily as well and is fine with liz earle stuff. The cleanser is great too .

MadameOvary · 27/12/2008 12:00

I used papaw ointment on my face last night and was pleasantly surprised. Its a barrier cream too so you could go out in the cold with it. It also doubles as the best lip balm I have ever tried, and I've pretty much tried 'em all, even that La`Mer one.

cornsilk · 27/12/2008 12:07

where did you get it from madame ovary?
