for my pre-Christmas cut and colour, and I hate it! I am too wet to go and tell them, so what can I do >
Main problem is that they used too much bleach, or left it too long. I usually look honey-coloured, now I am brassy blond. Is there something I can buy in Boots to fade it a bit???

I had a disaster once of my own making - tried to dye my hair dark brown, it turned black. It was recommended to me by hairdressers as it can tone down hair as it is a "harsh" shampoo. But it must be the dandruff one for some reason.

southeastastra · 19/12/2008 14:41

silver shampoo tones down the yellow. though may give you a blue rinse look. you could maybe try it on a little bit first.

you need those toners and shaders.

though the hairdresser should be able to give you a more permanent 'rinse'

SSSantaClausIzzzComing · 19/12/2008 14:43

go back to the hairdressers and get it done professionally. If you think the women at the salon you went to might be offended (?) because their own hair is that particular pale shade, go elsewhere but don't risk anything with bleached hair.

GeorgeAndTimmy · 19/12/2008 14:47

Loads of advice - thanks so much. My hair is bleached, so not yellow-ish, but too pale for my liking. I don't like the idea of green , nor can I go back, even though I know I should. Maybe I will just get myself a bobble hat...
Does bleached hair fade at all?

MrsWeasleyStrokesSantasSack · 19/12/2008 14:49

please be careful if you tinker with it yourself. my friend did this and it went green

Consider ringing them and saying that you thought you would get used to it/or in salon lighting it looked ok but now you realise that its just too harsh for you/your colouring. Ask if there is anything you can do?

good luck

SSSantaClausIzzzComing · 19/12/2008 14:49

why couldn't you go back though? Come on, be brave. You could always say you think it looks quite nice although it is a lot paler than you usually wear it but dh (blame it on him) wants it honey-blonde as that's his favourite shade or some such thing. You don't ahve to march in there, guns blazing. Bet they get this kind of thing a lot you know.

honestfriend · 19/12/2008 15:14

Just practise saying what you need to say "I am sorry but this colour is not what I asked for- I need you to sort it out please"- SAY IT in front of a mirror at home stop being a wuss and either phone them or walk in and say it.

YOU are the CLIENT!!

DoesntChristmasDragOn · 19/12/2008 16:03

Just
Go
Back

Toots · 19/12/2008 17:22

I told them my cut was 'perfect'. Then examined it more fully and called to arrange a 'tweak' a few days later.

Just
Call
Them

They just need to put a toner on it.

SpaceTrain · 19/12/2008 17:55

If you put anything lighter than DARK brown on to blonde highlighted hair it WILL go green.

So you have 3 choices:

  • go to Boots, and buy a very dark brown colour (and tbh it will turn a bit khaki over the next few weeks)
  • go back to the hairdressers and ask them to tone it down a bit
  • live with it

(So speaketh the voice of experience, who chose to go very dark brown, hated it even more and has never been able to get nicely highlighted hair since)

JRocksaNadelekLowen · 19/12/2008 18:01

Not want you want to hear, but you really do need to go back. Any good hairdresser will be happy to sort it out if you aren't entirely happy, they will want the repeat business. It will most likely be as simple as having a toning bath/rinse put over it to tone down the colour. Be brave, it will take seconds to explain and then you will get the hair you want!

izyboy · 19/12/2008 20:01

Now come on G&T. Grow some balls woman! Get down there, do as Pucca says and tell them it is too bright in daylight and it makes you look washed out. They get this all the time. COME ON WOMAN!!!

sweetcat · 19/12/2008 20:15

Sadly I speak from experience - do not do it yourself. If you really can't go back then go to another salon. Do you really want to look like grotbags for Christmas???

Earthymama · 19/12/2008 20:28

I sadly have a rather orange hair colour at the mo which DP has toned down somewhat with some 'at-home' highlights!! After commenting that I resembled
this!!

This is not a good look and I'm too broke to go to hairdressers. also my guy would be 'OUTRAGED' in a very volatile manner (even though it does match his skin tone!!)

Earthymama · 19/12/2008 20:30

I've been ill and had anti-viral medication which has affected my hair, my skin, my general look so I (mistakenly)thought would be improved by a warmer shade.

Why do I do these things?

GeorgeAndTimmy · 19/12/2008 20:34

BUM! BUM! BUM! I really can't go back, I just can't. I know I SHOULD, but I CAN'T. I can't face seeing the woman (girl) that did it - she is very young, trendy and I am sure feels pity for my obvious lack of style. I cannot face going back.

There is no chance of getting a slot anywhere else - I was lucky to get the appt I did and I made it a couple of weeks ago .

Is there ANY chance it will look better by itself given time? Can I get a 'toner' myself and do it at home?

PS I don't look like a grotbags btw - think more Bet Lynch/Peggy Mitchell - chavy-blonde iykwim (weak )

SSSantaClausIzzzComing · 19/12/2008 20:38

no on no account do it at home. What if it goes wrong and then what? You'd have to go the hairdressers and get that colour stripped out and then a new colour put on top.

Take a friend with you when you go back. Take a photo showing the colour you want your hair to be.

We haven't seen it, just hear from you that you aren't happy with it. Maybe it looks great, I don't know. Maybe you just need to get used to it? What about if you change your make-up a bit or wear softer colours near your face, does it make any difference?

GeorgeAndTimmy · 19/12/2008 20:43

Um, it doesn't look great, for sure. It just looks trashy and a bit obvious. Normally, you wouldn't know I coloured my hair as it was subtle shades of honey blonde. This is just pretty much one-tone bleached blonde. They didn't do what I wanted at the salon, true. But it takes me enough courage to go in there once every few months, I just can't face it again. I would be fine if I could just tone it down a bit...

No, but they will say they have no space to fit me it, and snigger at me once I have gone. I hate going to the hairdressers under normal circumstances, but I would find this humiliating. I will not be convinced. I know I won't go back. I just want a kind person to pat me on the back and say, have you tried 'xxxx' product, it worked brilliantly for me

OP posts:
SSSantaClausIzzzComing · 19/12/2008 20:55

I don't think you can though, that's the problem.

Is this the hairdresser who normally colours your hair? If not and you usually have another one, could you call, just ask for her personally. If you hate it, I think you should go and get it fixed.

The way you normally have it sounds lovely. Don't put up with some all-over bleach job or whatever they have done to you. You can't be in awe of a trendy young thing who doesn't do her job well now, can you?

Can you not call and speak to the salon owner or manager or something? If they know in advance and are expecting you, I don't think there'll be bad vibes. Honestly i think they get this a lot and it's worth their while to have you happy if you're a regular.

SSSantaClausIzzzComing · 19/12/2008 20:56

aw you poor thing. Sounds like you should change hairdressers anyway. I wouldn't go there from what you say.

I am grateful for your support, honestly, I am. In any other circumstance, I would be with you, saying 'go back', 'you can't be intimidated' etc. But the hairdressers is my achilles heel. I go in there and feel like crap. It doesn't help it is staffed by young trendies, but it is the only place I can get my hair done without spending £60, so I go, with gritted teeth.
Be nice - it will fade, won't it?
