What do you think, is it possible to wear a netted prom skirt as daywear?

like this here
with a nice fitted cardigan and suede boots?
I want to get into shape now after 3 pregs but I used to wear pretty skirts with cardis but they are all gone, I really fancy wearing some proms ...but in the daytime for popping to the shops and er..school..am I style mad? It's just that I don't have the got to get into my jeans urge..but a girly fun look...yes that could tempt me out of my post maternity joggers.

Yeeees -- but only if you are the sort of person who has the confidence to wear it without having to ask on an internet forum first...

beansmum · 15/12/2008 17:41

I was wondering the same thing today, I have a similar skirt, black and no flowers, and have only worn it once. I came to the conclusion that I would look idiotic wearing it in the daytime and it has gone in the pile for oxfam.

PortAndStilton · 15/12/2008 17:43

Actually that one's more versatile than most, I think, so worth a try. Personally I'd wind up putting my heel through the hem, though...

mazzystartled · 15/12/2008 17:43

yes definitely
with opaque tights, red lippy and attitude

fossa · 15/12/2008 17:44

Nope. sorry.

Nice though.

samsonara · 15/12/2008 17:49

Well yes you are right PortAndStilton, I am afraid after 3 quick succession prgs and about a stone and half to lose my style confidence for myself has taken a long vacation.

I tink it's down to the air with which you wear it -- if you think you can pull off an air of devil-may-care confidence then it would work (that goes for more or less anything, I think, which is probably why a three-year-old can pull off wearing a pyjama top, tutu and wellies with aplomb). If you're going to shuffle along apologetically wondering whether it was such a good idea after all then it probably wouldn't.

CarminaBanana · 15/12/2008 17:59

It's a lovely skirt.
Go for it - the boots and cardi idea sounds fine.

CarminaBanana · 15/12/2008 17:59

YY, you must wear it with an air of confidence.

twinsetiscrapatflouncing · 15/12/2008 18:00

I wear things for work that most people would wear out but would not wear that skirt as the fabric is to night timey.

I do carry things off as I have that devil may care confidence - at work anyway

DasherDancerPrancerFMVixen · 15/12/2008 18:01

a mum in the playground was wearing one similar style but red and black grafitti style design. She was wearing it with BFOB (big fuck off boots), and a boxy black jacket and a red beret. She look incredibly stylish. It does help that she looks like Amelie, mind......

If you wear it, don't be apologetic about it, shoulders back, tits forward and head held high

twinsetiscrapatflouncing · 15/12/2008 18:02

I agree Dasher I could not carry of that skirt in the day as I would think I look a twit whereas I carry of other things that others wouldn;t wear as I think I look fab

FrannyandZooey · 15/12/2008 18:16

yes why the hell not

samsonara · 15/12/2008 18:34

Thank you, you lovely mnetters, sends cyber kisses shoulders back, head high, wearing above prom skirt or similar, black opagues, boots and black nipped in waist cardigan and huge corsage and big smile!

I would wear it.
But would spend all day explaining to people that no, I am not going somewhere.

( although they are getting used to me now)

Anna8888 · 15/12/2008 18:42

No please don't buy the skirt in the OP.

If you want feminine daywear, why don't you wear dresses? There are lots of lovely ones around.

BoccaDellaNativita · 15/12/2008 18:43

I would wear it - in fact I have something similar which I got from a charity shop (possibly because the previous owner lost their nerve) - and would spend the day explaining that this was the somewhere to which I was going.

ComeOVeneer · 15/12/2008 18:44

I agree with Annna, there are lovley dresses around at the moment, far more flattering and suitable for day wear. If you are asking you are clearly unsure and therefore will be self concious wearing it and it will show.

janeite · 15/12/2008 19:02

I often wear mad 1950s style skirts with boots and really like the look. I'm afraid I don't like the linked skirt at all though: it looks a bit too Per Una to me and seems a funny length for boots unless you are very tall.

onebatmotherofgoditschilly · 15/12/2008 19:24

I am wearing a net can-can petticoat, knee length boots, vintage denim jacket and very red lipstick.

I look... astonishing, I should think, one way or the other

onebatmotherofgoditschilly · 15/12/2008 19:26

have to agree with janeite that the linked skirt is too MOR - it needs to be a bit more extreme to work, the nightwear as daywear thing, I think.

janeite · 15/12/2008 19:36

Where did you get your petticoat OneBat? I have been having cravings for one.

samsonara · 15/12/2008 19:45

what's MOR? Yes that's not the best prom skirt for the look, it looks like it may be a bit too high sheen , I think a black one would be perfect, shame the purple one sold out on my size. I love the net can can look I'm imagining you in onebat. The prom skirt day look is very much in a style tht would feel right as I wore alot of sequinned beaded skirts and even velvet ones before but they all got given away. I think I'm just having a bad confidence day today because I tried on two pairs of trousers in the shops which didn't over fit baby fat tum. I'm just getting my ideas together for my 2009 wardrobe as 2005-2008 has been all maternity and post preg. I think preg has made my confidence go down in my style sense although each time I have bought whole new wardrobes, they were all clothes I didn't feel were really me if you know what I mean. I've forgotten what it's like to be out of these and still need to lose weight so am questioning a look I wouldn't otherwise,

they were both last year or the year before, janeite - one in steel grey from Noa Noa and one in teal blue from Primark! I haven't seen any this year but I've been keeping awaaaay from the shops.

(MOR is middle-of-the-road, samsonara).

I know what you mean about maternity clothes btw - they do tend to be very MOR (see?) and you can lose your mojo a bit.

I am still at least a stone and a half heavier than I ever was - but once I'd decided to ignore that fact I felt a lot better. Still don't wear jeans, though.

janeite · 15/12/2008 20:06

Steel grey sounds yummy.

Samson - if you want to be a bit whacky in your style, it might be worth seeing if you can find the Vogue shots of Helena Bonham Carter, inspired by Roald Dahl stories. Or googling somebody like What'shernameScottThomas from Four Weddings who always looks gorgeous in a slightly quirky way.

I too am a stone and a half ever than what I see as "my" weight but I think it's best to dress for your personality and likes, whatever your size (so long as that doesn't involve anything too short, too tight or midriff revealing!).
