Well my "style" seems to be rare... or those of you like me are too shy to say it?

In the past few weeks I have posted on topics such as food, Mc Donald and TV....
Now Am I the only one who always cooks from fresh for her kids (because they enjoy the quality of the food and I like cooking), does not go to McD (they wouldn't like it as there is no way I am buying the "gift") and who thinks they have a far better time playing then watching tele.

I was quite surprised to read that several people (and I am sure thousands more) feel it's a treat to feed your kids occasional junk food... what has our society come to??? For those who have the desire, time and interest to not feed junk, allow much/any tele... is it normal that we are considered the odd ones out, the weird ones? It use to be like this (generations ago), it was the norm... now we're called all sorts of things but made to feel that we are too puritanical.

I am sure some of you are going to take this as a controversial thread, it isn't meant like that I want to know if anyone feels like this too.... I feel very lonely on Mumsnet with my more "puritanic" stance

moondog - totally agree that processed fooods contain salt, but am so fed up of the stance that a few fish fingers are the devil's work

If my son has 3 fishfingers with mashed potato and 2 fresh veg, I don't consider that to be a high salt meal.

paolosgirl · 22/03/2005 10:30

Each to their own, I guess...

Does put me in mind of a party we went to once, where a little boy said "mummy said I can't chicken nuggets" (they were homemade, but there was no amount of telling him), "I can't have chips, they're bad for you", and "I'm not allowed fizzy drinks". Poor little fellow. I suppose she could have served up fruit and savoury snacks, but hey, let's live a little from time to time.

moondog · 22/03/2005 10:36

I agree iota. Actually to loathe and fear crap food with a vengeance, does I think, ascribe to it a power it doesn't possess.

We must all be born with an innate longing for salt, sugar and fat, hence its popularity.
The problem it seems now is that we aren't actually consuming more calories than we used to, rather that we are expending less through physical activity, and also taking in more preservatives, chemicals and other dodgy stuff.

I love fish and chips, but need to keep a lid on that one, in order to get into my jeans!

Mears, think your b/feeding reason is interesting, as some would say they b/feed because they can't be arsed with food/bottle preparation, and others would say they bottlefeed because they can't be arsed with the time that b/feeding takes. What's the phrase we often hear?
'Chained to the sofa'
In retrospect, when your toddler is hurling themselves around the place, the prospect of being still for longer than 3 minutes suddenly seems fab.

SleepyJess · 22/03/2005 10:50

Re 'chained to the sofa'.. I used to answer the front door/do chest physio on DS/hoover/give instructions over the phone/make sandwiches/post on forums like this/iron small 'emergency' items/cook three course meal.. all with a baby hanging off my tit!

PS Was kidding re the three course meal.. I don't COOK! .. but did all the rest. Case of having to..

flamesparrow · 22/03/2005 10:51

You're right with the chocolate and wine not going, but if I'm fancying the chocolate, I don't want the wine to feel left out and offended!!!

Ostara is a pagan festival - sort of the prequel of Easter, I celebrate that, so me n B do egg decorating etc to do with Ostara, and I buy her a new outfit (really just an excuse to buy her pretties ). This is one spoilt kid because of two different faiths - she gets eggs from family for easter and clothes from me for Ostara, Christmas she gets oodles of pressies, and I have decided that each year she will get a special book from me for Yule. Must be like being raised Jew and Christian!!!

moondog · 22/03/2005 10:53

Me too sj!! Could never understand that reason. Even with ds weighing nearly 20lbs, i can still hold him to feed in one arm and use the other. Doesn't bottlefeeding take two?

Berst go, off to soft play place with friend and her kids.!!!! Aaaarghhh!
VERY unMoondog, but my friend is lovely!

moondog · 22/03/2005 10:54

Never heard of that fs!!! (Thought I was educated too!! {shock}) Sounds intriguing...

flamesparrow · 22/03/2005 10:56

Ostara Info... a bit long...

marthamoo · 22/03/2005 11:10

Oooh, I could murder a BigMac.

Bozza · 22/03/2005 11:14

Love easter egg and wine together...

psychomum5 · 22/03/2005 11:33

Well I am not too Snotty to admit that my kids have macdonalds.......oooh, the shock!!!!

I have five kiddies, the older three of whom do ballet lots, so they get plenty of exercise.

My two sons love playing outside in the garden and my not yet five year old has even learnt to ride his bike without stabilisers before ANY of his friends (which shows how much time he spends on it![getting lots of exercise too]!)

They do watch TV, but if the weather is dry much prefer to do other things.

My 6yr old daughter's fave activity is colouring and glueing, we have a fantastic art gallery full of pictures.

I do cook nourishing meals from scratch, but I also have a very busy life, so sometimes I 'fail' to give them that every day. AND on those days we go to macdonalds/pizza hut/frankie n benny's/toby carvery.....whichever is the choice really.
Macdonalds is about my fave tho, simply because with 5 kiddies money is tight at times (especially with the ballet fee's), and to feed the entire family for under £20 is FAB!!!

They have choices of food, and given the choice of my food or eating out they would choose mine every time (polishing MY halo now!), BUT I just like to not have to cook sometimes and so off out we go.

At the end of the day, we are all going to die one day, so why not have a bit of fun on the way (and junk!).

And besides which, I actually like the burgers from macdonalds, so who am I to deprive them of food I like just on the premise that it is 'bad' for you. Everything is 'bad' for us in some way, even water has had health concerns at some point (and organic too!), so hey ho, off to 'hell' I go for a giving them a Big Mac!

psychomum5 · 22/03/2005 11:33

And chocolate and wine................mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, yummy

Gobbledigook · 22/03/2005 11:34

Dear, dear me at this thread...Some people think/worry far too much about things imho.

I'm with ya Hula and nailpolish!

BTW - getting on with all those things while breast feeding kind of negates the 'it's better for bonding' argument for me. So if you have to sit down and use two hands to bottle feed aren't you actually bonding more than if you are doing whatever it is while the baby 'hangs off your tit'?

nailpolish · 22/03/2005 11:37

ggd!

psychomum5 · 22/03/2005 11:37

I once had a child to one of my eldest daughters party (5th b/day me thinks), who had NEVER had a sweet. she stuck her head in the bowl I had put out and inhaled!!!!!

Went home very high on the additives she had never had before, and raved about the best ever party she had ever been too....and her mother realised that maybe she should just allow things in moderation after all!!!!!

mears · 22/03/2005 11:38

I sat and B/F and did bugger all

Even with toddlers runnung around

marthamoo · 22/03/2005 11:39

GDG - not breast-feeding, no please don't bring that into it!

mummytosteven · 22/03/2005 11:41

GDG - you can try a bit harder about being contentious - what about throwing in GF/dummies/4 X 4s

mummytosteven · 22/03/2005 11:44

i have some sympathy with juice instead of squash thing, coz I am allergic to some types of squash -make me a bit coughy/wheezy, but never had a reaction to juice.

nailpolish · 22/03/2005 11:44
