Well my "style" seems to be rare... or those of you like me are too shy to say it?

In the past few weeks I have posted on topics such as food, Mc Donald and TV....
Now Am I the only one who always cooks from fresh for her kids (because they enjoy the quality of the food and I like cooking), does not go to McD (they wouldn't like it as there is no way I am buying the "gift") and who thinks they have a far better time playing then watching tele.

I was quite surprised to read that several people (and I am sure thousands more) feel it's a treat to feed your kids occasional junk food... what has our society come to??? For those who have the desire, time and interest to not feed junk, allow much/any tele... is it normal that we are considered the odd ones out, the weird ones? It use to be like this (generations ago), it was the norm... now we're called all sorts of things but made to feel that we are too puritanical.

I am sure some of you are going to take this as a controversial thread, it isn't meant like that I want to know if anyone feels like this too.... I feel very lonely on Mumsnet with my more "puritanic" stance

Dis Frenchgril... t'as quoi contre les belges ???? Et puis Brel?
Cod - Belgians are not French
We have better beer, we are the ones who created chips, we have tintin, Jacques Brel, Hercule Poirot, Magritte, and we have fab cuisine !

Caribbeanqueen · 21/03/2005 19:46

Yes Noddy counts, but it's the only thing she is interested in watching.

FrenchGirl · 21/03/2005 19:47

I know pupuce, les Belges are lovely, but you do dip chips in mayonnaise and not in mustard like we do
brel is/was great

franch · 21/03/2005 19:55

Um, what's this doing in the style section? I was expecting someone's description of their bizarre clothes and makeup

But since we're on the subject velcro, I'm with you in the puritan corner and I don't care who thinks I'm weird

Enid · 21/03/2005 19:58

more show offs

NotQuiteCockney · 21/03/2005 20:05

I only do fresh food for DS1. He thinks the telly only works when you're ill. He's never been to McDonald's.

He does get to listen to francophone kid's music (Caillou, Henri Des), English pop, and francophone music (Brel, Gainsbourg).

Enid · 21/03/2005 20:05

and your point being...?

NotQuiteCockney · 21/03/2005 20:10

DS1 eats really well. DS2 has just started solids, and is the least interested baby ever. I'm sure I'm doomed to a really terrible eater, after DS1 loving squid and cucumber and sweet peppers. Just watch, in a year, I'll be buying scary food products shaped like other non-food things.

maisystar · 21/03/2005 20:11

sorry but this has bugged me.

i think the vast majority of mn feed their kids home made healthy food 98%of the time, with quick stuff(fish fingers) and treats(and yes kids do see sweets, among other things, as treats) occasionally.

again the vast majority of mn do play, learn, interact with their kids, with some tv watching too, ffs sake it isn't going to harm them.

....and neither is the odd trio to mc'donalds or similar.

aaaaaaghrrrrrr

just out of interest what will you do when your kids learn about these 'evils' from friends and want to try them????

TinyGang · 21/03/2005 20:26

Well said maiseystar - I'm more the 98% with some er.. lapses/lazy days whatever you want to call them.

I don't consider you 'weird' velcrobott in your stance, but you are lucky in that you obviously have the time never to sway from it at all. Ever.

Tinker · 21/03/2005 20:31

velcrobott - what do you do for a treat? What if you didn't like cooking/couldn't cook? What if playing with kids all day long bores you senseless?

Enid · 21/03/2005 20:35

you can mix with us mortals you know, we'll forgive you, no need to feel lonely

I think most parents feed their kids junk food for convenience rather than as a 'treat' anyway.

Gobbledigook · 21/03/2005 20:40

I'm surprised by this thread as most of the people on here I'd say are more into fresh food/organic only, wouldn't be seen dead in Maccy D's or eating Pot Noodle, minimise TV and are generally more that way inclined than to put on a video while they eat crisps!!

And while I make the effort to feed the kids healthy home cooked food and to take them out and do things/interact, I'm not going to lose sleep over the odd fish finger and Thomas the Tank Engine video while I get on with something else.

Yes it's great for kids to play out and be active but they also need to wind down and a bit of TV often calms mine down before dinner or even after while they have their milk in their PJs. Actually ds1 comes out with all sorts of marvellous knowledge he's learned from Tikkabilla!!!

motherinferior · 21/03/2005 20:40

I put my grubby hand up - I've referred to the Inferiorettes being taken to McD's as a 'treat' by their childminder, while I stay at home writing about the evils of junk food. Yes, I'd rather they didn't go and I loathe McDs and all it stands for. But actually it won't, you know, kill them, not once in a blue moon.

Telly, now, they watch too much of at home but I can't be arsed to get overly worried about it. It's not as if they're watching ads.

Fran1 · 21/03/2005 20:45

Sorry havn't had time to read the whole thread, but, the impression i get from most threads i read, that most of us mumsnetters feed our kids fresh food, hate mc d's, and agree playing is more fun for kids than tv.

velcrobott i don't understand why the tone in your thread is as though you are being picked on!!! is there a thread i have missed?

I have never bought chicken nuggets and felt very smug when watching JO describe what is in them.

I am not in anyway obsessive, but i like to bring my dd up in the healthiest way possible.

Enid · 21/03/2005 20:45

mine think macdonalds is the bees knees. But dh loathes it and if we ever go we have to hide the happy toys

Enid · 21/03/2005 20:45

dd2 has been twice and still shouts 'Macdonalds!' in a voice filled with joy when she sees the golden arches

motherinferior · 21/03/2005 20:47

Enid
you make me feel much better. And dd1 keeps asking for your nuggets, btw, and praising them in far higher terms than anything else I've ever cooked.

Enid · 21/03/2005 20:48
maisystar · 21/03/2005 20:49

lol enid

Merlin · 21/03/2005 20:49

Agree with those who say telly can actually be educational - DS (4) gave me a long speech all about bats today which he had seen on Tweenies I think! Also even though I'm a SAHM, he gets teh odd fish finger etc (but they are 100% cod ). He doesn't like chicken nuggets luckily!
